Dogs! With Videos!

If you don’t care about dogs, ignore this post. But if you do care about dogs, this should be a fun one for you! Or at the least, it will be a convenient post for me because I can just send the link to everyone I know in Real Life and get their opinions too.

I need help! I think I want to get my next dog from the city shelter. Because shelter dogs are the best dogs, and no one seems to want them. The fancy rescues charge hundreds of dollars (literally) for dogs that have the same lack of known history and come with the same clean bill of health as the city shelter dogs. Plus, these dogs are so eager for love!

And most importantly, the best dog in the history of the world (the dog my family got when I was 3 years old) was a city pound dog, so experience has shown they are the superior dogs. We picked her at the pound because she was standing in front of all her little brothers and sisters on her little wobbly puppy legs like “you want to get at my family? You have to go through ME”. The Best Dog. But these dogs are okay too.

Fat Maxine, my top choice. Older, very overweight (but I can fix that, Dog Hazel was fat like this and I got her down to healthy weight in 3 months), loving to humans but not overwhelmingly needy or energetic. Plus, I like the name “Maxine” for a dog.

Sprite is even older than Maxine, and even more eager for love and uneager for moving around. I don’t like the name “Sprite”, especially for such an old steady dog, but I suppose I could change that. “Sally” maybe?

Molly, love the name, and oh my gosh is she a happy wonderful dog. But I am worried that I might not have enough energy to make her happy. She seems like a “yard to run in” dog, not a “4 long walks a day and watching TV” dog.

Slushie has a little less energy, and is all sleek and black which would match my car. But also a little less coordinated and aware of the world. Not necessarily a bad thing, I can be a bit of a day dreamer myself.

Trixie is a great size, and I love the white leaf print on her flank. But she is maybe too excited about, like, EVERYTHING. I haven’t been that excited about life since I was two. I don’t know if I can handle the constant “This is the BEST day of my ENTIRE life!!!!” attitude.

Of course, there is also the option of just getting all of them and gaslighting my landlord by only taking out one at a time and calling them all the same name. But that would be Wrong.

What do you think? Which dog should I get?

  1. On the run but I just have to weigh in. Of course, they are all wonderful, but I like the look and sort of ponderous sagacity of Sprite. Although not the name. She is hardly a Tinker Belle, more a Louise or a Malini.
    Good luck.

Anything smaller and less “pit-bull-ish” ?

In regards to energy, they all probably have spent the day in a cage and this is their big chance to run around. So, maybe not the most accurate representation on the video.

(And, do they get along with other dogs? Play fetch?)

    • But why would I want anything smaller and less pit bull-ish?

These are about as small as it gets at the city shelter, and as un-pit bull as it gets. All of them have been spayed by their previous owners (indicating a level of care that means they probably weren’t abused, plus I don’t have to pay for spaying) and do well with humans and other dogs. I already sorted out all the dogs down to the healthiest, happiest, and smallest.

South suburban humane society for some reason has a bunch of really ridiculously tiny pit bull like dogs (like the one they found hiding in a flower pot), but they are very far away and maybe not worth the drive.

Or, I could do a rescue again, but that’s supposed to help you get a healthier happier dog, and I did that, and my dog died in 8 months! So what’s the point?

  3. They are all adorable, I don’t know which one I would chose (maybe Sprite because I like her face), but I think it’s good idea to take a dog from the shelter.

    • Yeah, I need to just drive down to the shelter and meet all these folks. See what their personalities are like in person.

  4. Sprite or Slushy are tied for first currently, with Fat Maxine a close second. How old is old? I’d go with the odds and not set yourself up for heartbreak by getting a senior dog. So Slushy might win based on age. Slushy really is interested in everything but not in a “let me jump on it!” sort of way. I would see if Slushy is food motivated because s/he might be hard to train otherwise.

    • Sprite is officially 7. So not in the “guaranteed heartbreak within 2 years zone”, but definitely in the “mature, hard to place with an adopter, heartbreak within 4 years” zone. Fat Maxine is 4, which is kind of perfect. As young as you can be and still be a fully grown non-puppy dog. Fat Maxine and Sprite were both owner surrenders, so they have actual ages. The others are just guesses, Slushie and Molly are put in as 1 (because they are clearly full grown, and also clearly still puppies). And then Trixie is just weird.

The other advantage with Slushie is that she is least pit bull looking, could pass for a black lab if she had to. Not that I care, but it might make it easier for landlords. And I agree about Slushie being interested in everything but not dumb. That’s how I was as a baby, my Mom was just remembering that I kept trying to pick at the electrical outlets. Very curious and focused and hard to control.

  5. Team Slushie. Though Sprite has a great face and 10/10 gazing action, could totally picture her making eyes at you across the room while you wrote.

    • Slushie is more of a thoughtful dog, very good at focusing even in the confusion of time out at the shelter.

  6. I mean, they’re probably purposefully making all of the dogs look energetic/only showing footage where they look energetic because that’s appealing to a lot of people. So don’t rule anyone out until you meet them.

It’s great to get a dog at a public shelter! Because the rescues vet potential owners but maybe the shelter doesn’t. And you know you will be a good owner even if you aren’t vetted, so you are saving a dog from getting potentially not as good an owner as you.

I’m another vote for Fat Maxine, but Trixie also seems like an excellent dog.

    • I went through so many hoops with the shelters and rescues! They vetted me and I had to sign a contract a pay a deposit and on and on. And it’s the same dog, ultimately, they are just rescuing them from shelters and then putting them in foster homes before they get adopted, this way I cut out the middle-man.

Trixie does seem like an excellent dog! But Fat Maxine is awfully nice too.
