20 Shahrukh Songs Outside the Standard List

I’m really sleepy. The whole “getting up at dawn to get my car fixed” yesterday really wore me out. And I’ve been sleeping weird because I still don’t have a dog (another post on that today! Fun fun! For my doggie subset of readers). Anyway, get ready for me to be lazy and give the people what they want. As Neha Dhupia says, “Only Sex and SRK sell”.

There are the Shahrukh songs that are on every playlist and every songs DVD, that we have all memorized. And then there are the others. This is the post for the others, the ones that are secretly really really good but don’t get much play.

Now, for many many of you, these songs will not be outside the “standard list”, because you have obsessively watched/listened to every song Shahrukh has ever done, and your “standard list” is all 300-some songs. But pretend that isn’t the case, pretend you only knew the Dharma/YRF SRK movies and the songs that became sleeper hits, and this post will make sense.

I love this song from Billu. It’s the shortest one in the film I think, and with the simplest video, but I love the way it sounds and how Shahrukh is kind of the fantasy guy without being sexualized. “Khudaya Khair”

This is a recent song and a recent movie, so people probably kind of know it, but it’s still not one of his biggest hits. It’s already fading away a little bit, and will probably keep fading as the years go by. But I really love the way Arijit sings it, and I love the eyeliner look. “Zaalima”

This song video just makes me happy! Makes little sense in context in the film, and Shahrukh’s jacket is stupid, but I love the little hip bobble move they do, and the song is really melodic and nice. “Hum Ko Deewane Huye”

This song makes even less sense in context, Shahrukh is an abusive horrible passenger from Madhuri’s last flight, and now he is stalking her and serenading her through the airport. But such a pretty sound to it! “Badi Mushkil”

Similarly stalker-but-pretty, is this song from Kabhi Haa Kabhi Naa. Although in this case at least it isn’t a stranger, it’s his old friend that he is trying to make forgive him. “Aana Mere Pyar Ko”

I am on record as loving this movie, and that this is my favorite song from it. But I am still including it in this post because OMG Shahrukh has never done a sexier song. Really, NEVER. These two are orgasming all over the place. “Ab Hain Neend Kise”

If I don’t include this song, my friend will never forgive me. “Mere Mehboob” gets all the airplay from Duplicate, but this is her favorite. She likes the part 4:20 into the song where Shahrukh is just like “whatever” about trying to pull Juhi onto his chest and failing. “Ladna Jhadadna”

Another Baadshah one! I love the way he keeps pointing at Sonali without directly looking at her, It’s subtly tricky choreography, camera work, and performing on Shahrukh’s part. “Woh Ladki”

Speaking of movies that start with “Baa”, this one is famous for the “Kaali Kaali Aankhen” song, but there is nothing wrong with this one either! Especially if you like a young Shahrukh in glasses. “Kitaben Bahut Si”

Yanking us forward in time, remember the first time Shahrukh tried to produce a movie that he didn’t star in? And how no one cared so he had to make a promo video with himself in it? This is that video! And it’s actually pretty decent. “Antenna”

This is a familiar song and a familiar movie to the SRK TruFan. But the rest of you will probably go “huh? What is this now?” “Ek Haseen” from Maya Memsaab.

Koyla gets a fair amount of play for “Tanhaiye” and the chandelier song, but I kind of like this one from earlier in the film. Madhuri is super cute and they have good chemistry together. “Dekha Tujhe To”

Speaking of cute together and obscure, the Shahrukh-Nagma love song from King Uncle! “Is Jahen Ki Nahin”

And thanks to Procrastinatrix reminding me, let us also remember “Maya” from Don 2.

I think this is the most swoony and romantic song Juhi and Shahrukh have ever done together and I am really sad it doesn’t get as much attention as some of their other songs. “Aur Kya”

From the same movie, of course we have my personal “pump myself up confidence” song! “I Am the Best”

Okay, this is a really really silly song. But I love the stupid dance moves, and I love the nonsense lyrics, and I really really love the spunky female cop. “Main Tu Hoon Pagal”

Shahrukh has done a lot of those big bhangra party style songs, but this particular one doesn’t get nearly the play I wish it did. “Bank Tere Jogi”

Speaking of Bhangra, Greatest. Lyrics. Ever. Also, appreciate the completely empty nightclub, the strange Pop art on the wall, and just the overall bonkers of it. And how Shahrukh doesn’t wear a shirt, because he is Troubled. “Pump Up the Bhangra”.

Last one! From Chaahat, mostly worth it for the way gender dynamics are flipped with Ramya Krishnan being very “female gaze” about looking at him, while he is singing his little heart out.

Okay, what did I miss? What are little known SRK songs that have either nice music or nice visuals? Which of these songs is really too well known to be worth including?

  1. One of my favourites didn’t even make it into the movie ( or at least, any version I’ve seen of it). Aahista Aahista from Swades is the most beautiful, haunting song on my ‘Relax’ playlist. I’m not so keen on the visuals, feel they detract from the song, so I’m okay with it being cut from the film.

    • My problem with that song is that it sounds so similar to “Sawariya” from the same movie. Which is probably why they cute it, two dreamy slow songs are too many for one film. But “Ahista Ahista” is love on its own.

  2. I love Halka Halka from Raees, the song and the video, and I’m sorry it got cut.

I also like a few songs from Oh Darling Yeh Hai India. The one early on where he has agreed to entertain Deepa, the title track, and Chhoo Le Ne De, which I find quite sexy, in among the fountain statues coming to life, and despite the fact that Deepa can’t really act or dance, lol. It’s hard to find any of these as videos for some reason.

I love the entire soundtrack, songs and videos, from One 2 Ka 4. But I think at least a few of them may be well known enough not to be on this list.

I also like his and Aish’s number from Shakti:the Power. But I like lallily’s edit to Elvis more than than I do the original song. I know you like it too, Margaret!

    • I just had to take a little break from work and watch the SRK & aish & Elvis video. I do love it SO MUCH.

  3. The first song that came to mind was “Loveriya Hua” from Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. It used to get a lot of play on radio and Doordarshan (the only TV channel in India at the time) when it first came out but I never even hear it mentioned anymore. Also, every song from Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

Speaking of your list, I used to have the Ek Haseen Nigah song from Maya Memsaab on a mixed cassette tape and seeing that song here brought back so many teenage memories. I still remember the lyrics! Guess that makes me a true superfan 🙂

      • I decided not to include “Loveriya” because it almost feels TOO popular. But then, the whole thing is subjective, I included “Zaalima” which I am sure gets way more play in the present day than “Loveriya” does.

    • It definitely makes you a superfan!!!!! I was impressed with myself for even being vaguely able to recognize the song and the movie it is from, definitely didn’t know the lyrics.

    • I was seriously considering Dildara! Or else Criminal. But I wasn’t sure how much those two songs got played (I know “Chammak Challo” is big but I wasn’t sure about them)

    • I was considering that, but I really only love Jaate Hoon Main, and that one is definitely on the standard list.

  4. “Kitaben Bahut Si” is my favourite song from Baazigar and “Dekha Tujhe To” is the one I like the most from Koyla. Other songs from those movies can be more famous but I don’t remember them. “Kitaben..” and “Dekha Tujhe..” instead I suddenly hearand see in my head when somebody mention them.

And how about this song? I love it with all my heart, but I don’t think people talk about it anymore.

    • I considered this song! But it felt more like a Madhuri song than a Shahrukh one. Oh oh!!!! 20 Madhuri songs outside the standard list?

      • Good idea!

I don’t know why, because I’m not Ajay Devgan fan at all, but yesterday, after reading you post about Aamir’s movies, I started thinking I would like to read about Ajay’s films e.g Ajay’s must watch or something like this. I can be done with every other actor or actress too.
