I didn’t want to jinx it, so I’ve been keeping this from you, but I found a promising dog on Tuesday night, applied for him, got approved on Wednesday, and am going to pick him up after work today (Thursday).
But I didn’t stop there! My blood was up and the chase was on! So after work on Monday and Tuesday I stopped by the shelters that had evening hours. No luck on Monday, but on Tuesday I hit gold at the first shelter I went to.
I like the shelter itself, it was founded by a veterinarian about 40 years ago and is in the far north suburbs, kind of close to the Indian movie theater actually, a vet clinic and then a little building with nice big cages and an outdoor run next to it.. And I walked in to find a nice looking elderly woman sitting at the front desk cuddling a puppy. And then I was handed off to a series of volunteers who had me wash my hands and then go back and meet dogs. It was a busy time, because it was dinner and walks time, so there was a lot of hubbub, but there was one little doggie who just kind of quietly padded around his cage and came over to say “hi” when I passed.

So, I asked to meet this dog and a very knowledgable older man volunteer (seriously, this place is entirely run by retirees who remind me of my grandparents) took me over and had me watch the dog walk and play and pointed out how obedient the little guy was, and I thought to myself “sure, with you! You are a big scary Grandpa guy, I’m a pushover”. But it was a great dog. Still a puppy, even though fully grown, still in that mouthy stage. And running all over to smell everything and say “hi” to everyone, and just generally thrilled with the world.

And SO CUTE! Soft soft fuzzy fur, feels more like a puppy than an adult dog, and won’t shed (the hair wouldn’t come out even if you pulled). Little bitty guy, but more like a shrunk down regular dog than a toy dog, if that makes sense. Brindle coat, which is very cool looking. And, the best part, his tail was broken at some point and healed wrong, so now it waves at a 45 degree angle.

So, I decided to apply for this dog, even though he is too young, and male, both of which I wasn’t going to go for. And the nice wise old man helped me fill out the application and told me I would probably be approved, but I was still nervous. But I was also super happy just having found a potential dog.

And then yesterday, I got a call during the day to tell me I was approved! Which really wasn’t hard, considering I gave them my friend’s phone number as a reference, and they left her a message and she hadn’t even called them back yet. I guess they just had to know it wasn’t a totally fake number. Plus, you know, I am so clearly a not-abuser. If anything I will be that terrible dog owner who feeds the dog too much and can’t manage to discipline him. Which, actually, is a real concern, so I need to start obedience training with my little guy soon.
Last night I got the crate out of the closet (Hazel hated it so I never used it with her, but this little guy shouldn’t be left alone without being locked up), and put a pillow and blanket in it, and got out the dishes and cleared off tempting food-like things from all low surfaces, and generally got all puppy ready. And today I will finish work and then zip off and fill out all my paperwork with the shelter and get a dog! I’m so excited! Unless it goes wrong! In which case I will be mad at myself for putting up this post and jinxing it!

He looks very cute. Have you thought of a name yet?
Hope he settles in well and isnβt too naughty.

He is sooo cute!!! Actually, he may be a little too cute to strict around. And he does not shed, which is a huge bonus! Okay, now I want a dog!

That’s the problem! I will try to yell at him and then just melt when I look at his little face.

OMG he is so cute! I’m happy you’re getting another dog. How about naming the dog Aamir to avenge SRK’s honor? π

My friend is pushing hard for “Raj” in honor of SRK.

Name: How about Khan? Or, in English, King?

It’s a really little dog. I feel like a “king” has to be at least 30 pounds.

Woo-hoo!
He looks like an Arjun to me. Just that nice puppy silliness and energy and cuteness. (Kapoor, not Rampal).
This is Miss Braganza in case Iβm anonymous.

So much energy! We just got home, and I am already tired out.

Might be beyond my pronunciation abilities, when yelling in the park.

Wonderful news!
How about Harry? Or Hari? For obvious reasons.
Though Jack does seem to suit him.

Well, he does have hair, so “Harry” would be logical, right?

So, you have this little bundle of energy at home, now…well, he might challenge your educational abilities but I’m confident…he may be just the right companion at the right time (companion = Sati in Hindi π )

Yeah, I’ve been stuck in my own head way too much lately, having a dog that requires training and attention might be just what I need right now. And a year from now, he will be out of puppydom and a whole different dog.
