Okay, big week! Lots of non-Hindi!!!! On May 1, for the International Day of Labor, lots and lots of Malayalam communists. Then Badlapur on Friday, and finally Yennai Arindhaal on Sunday. Even if no one else likes it, I really really like Yennai Arindhaal and I am replaying the review for Ajith and Trisha’s birthdays this week.
May Day will be allllll Malayalam, allllll the time!
Iyobinte Pushtakam, Fahad Faazil plays a WWII era revolutionary who frees the rural laborers from the yoke of oppression created by the British and perpetuated by the landlords. He’s cool and hot, the political message is on point, oh and it has a white heroine who is lovely and respected and good and stuff. It’s on Hotstar and Einthusan.
Sukhavu, Nivin Pauly plays a new age communist who has lost touch with his faith, and also an old age hero communist. I haven’t watched or reviewed it yet, so this will be a fun one for us! Also on einthusan and hotstar.
Comrade in America, it’s not the greatest movie but it does have a fun bit with the hero imagining Lenin, Marx, and Stalin talking over his romantic problems. Most importantly, it has the BEST new age communist anthem. Oh, and it’s on Netflix!
I reviewed a few other Malayalam communist movies, but I didn’t know what I was talking about and they aren’t very good reviews. So I’ll just be doing these three for the holiday.
And then on Friday, Badlapur! Which I could have sworn I had already reviewed, but I guess not. Anyway, dark difficult film that proves Varun can actually act. And helped Radhike Apte break through to the mainstream, and brought Nawazuddin and Divya Dutta together onscreen. Just generally, GOOD! But dark. Oh, and it’s on youtube.
And finally, Yennai Arindhaal! A mature thoughtful police movie, with Ajith looking dashing and having a mature thoughtful romance with two mature thoughtful women, Trisha and Anushka Shetty. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but somehow I really really love this movie. You can watch it with the Telugu dub in Hotstar, the title is Yentavaadu Gaani. Or you can watch the real version on einthusan.
Have you seen Oru Mexican Aparatha?

No. Shoot, that could have been another one for Wednesday, but I already listed Sakhavu. Maybe Thursday if I have time?

Yennai Arindhaal is a really mature romance ! I really enjoyed the film’s perspective opposed to many action movies that propagate this alpha male image and often toxic masculinity.
