Saturday Small Talk: Did Anyone Notice I Skipped a Review Yesterday?

Happy Saturday! I am at my sister’s house and the days are kind of getting a little bit away from me. In a fun way! I saw Student of the Year 2 at the earliest possible show yesterday, and then we were off doing things for hours and I didn’t get to write my review until the evening. Oh well.

First, sorry! I was planning to write a review for Rehna Hai Tere Dil Main on Thursday and schedule it for Friday, but I was so zonked after traveling that my brain didn’t work. And then yesterday we were go-go-go right from the morning, so I only had time for the SOTY2 reviews. Rehna Hai Tere Dil Main is watched, and I will sit down and write the review sometime today. Sorry!

Other things to talk about! Newest (probably false) rumor is that Shahrukh and Katrina will be the leads in the Rohit Shetty-Farah Khan Satte Pe Satte remake. I’m not super happy about this, but I am also not un-happy. For one thing, a major plot point is that the hero is older and unmarried and suddenly decides to be married. So, Shahrukh can play his age a little bit. And while I still think Shahrukh and Katrina don’t have romantic chemistry, I think they might be able to play a couple who are married better than a couple who are dating. Kind of friendship and comfort instead of sexy sizzling romance might be more their speed. And Shahrukh made 2 good movies with Farah and one mediocre one, and one good movie with Rohit and one mediocre one, so the odds are good for another good one. What do you think?

Or Kat could be playing the other heroine, the fragile rich girl, and Shahrukh romances her in the double role as the assassin who falls in love with his mark.

Speaking of rumors, there is now a rumor about the Hrithik-Tiger movie, that it might be an army story with Hrithik playing Tiger’s superior officer and lots of action. That could be okay, especially if it is a romance wrapped in an army movie. Can you imagine? Hrithik as Tiger’s mentor and then they both fall in love with the same girl?

Or it could be a remake of A Guy Named Joe, Hrithik is a ghost who dies in the first few scenes and then comes back to mentor Tiger, who ends up falling for Hrithik’s girl.

That’s all I’ve got to talk about today! How about you?

  1. Something is off with SRK and Katrina, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I’ve noticed it in a bunch of interviews they’ve done together, that she gets … snappish? snippy? Irritable? … with him, and I notice it almost every time.
Two things come to mind. One, maybe she truly feels like he’s condescending – which I could see, since she’s been raised more Western, and he still calls women ‘girls’ and he tends to jump in (protectively, I think) during interviews and she feels cut off.
Alternately, perhaps she has a thing for the kind and gentle, sweet-smelling superstar who thinks she’s hot and is sad about it. She kind of vibes unrequited love, and I don’t think it has anything to do with Ranbir. (Why do I dislike his stoopid face so much??)
She strikes me as a really bright woman with some major depression and self-esteem issues, and now she’s crossing over into her late thirties, unmarried, not a ton of prospects from the Bollywood pool, and she’s too Western for most of them anyway.
I really liked her in Zero, but that’s because she dropped the bland, blank expression she generally wore through ALL of Jab Tak Hai Jan. (Was that supposed to be the face of love??tragedy??confusion/constipation??)
I’m not a fan of their chemistry, in any case. She doesn’t seem to spark him acting-wise. Now SRK and Rani have some weird we-look-comfortably-married thing that I’d kind of like to see again. I just watched Hichki, and she’s a damn fine actress. She still seems young and fiery while some of the other contemporary actresses just seem … old.
    Ya know?

    • I would love to see Rani with SRK again too! But I think we won’t for the same reason that she still seems so fiery. Rani seems to have decided to only do films based around her with really excellent parts, no more heroine roles or even co-lead. Which is great, and I bet is why she still seems so alive on screen. But it does mean I don’t think she will be ready to do another SRK film any time soon.

Agree about your impression of Kat as a very bright woman with issues. With her and SRK, they do hang out a lot socially, she was invited to his very small birthday house party two years ago. Which could still mean she doesn’t like how he treats her but she has to pretend, or it could mean that she has a crush. Or it could mean nothing.

Anyway, related to this story, Rohit Shetty is known for running very very fun and happy sets, so Kat working with him should be a nice fun treat for her.

      • How do actors and actresses keep from falling for their costar? All that eye-contact and forced intimacy make me think it could be really difficult to not crush, particularly if you’re not in a good, established relationship. I cast no judgements! I’m happily married for 26 years with 6 kids, but damn, I’d be all in with SRK in a heartbeat!

        • Shahrukh has said in a couple interviews that he falls a little bit in love often. I think that is what he means, you have to fall a little in love for these roles! Of course, doesn’t mean you act on it, or that it lasts past filming, or that you think it will last past filming.

      • I am watching the Film Companion interview with Rani for Hichki. She said her favorite thing is to sing and dance, and she wants to do more of those films again. But only with SRK. There’s hope!

    • There’s something off with Katrina and SRK for sure. There was an interview she and Anushka did during Zero promotions where she was asked about the Khans and she said SRK is extremely intimidating, much more than the other two, and that her hands used to shake if he was near her. She said Aamir is fine and Salman is really easy but SRK is not. Anushka was so shocked that she jumped in to defend him saying how nice he is and how much he helps you and that even for their first movie, he never made her realize that she was working with such a big star.
The same interviewer talked to SRK separately and told him what Katrina said and he was a little stumped about it and then ended up admitting he gets angry with her a lot but she knows he’s not serious and that he always apologizes.
There have been other instances too. Once Kat complained that SRK says a whole paragraph about how great Anushka is and only one line about her. Then there was one where the interviewer was asking silly rapid fire type questions and said “Who’s the most beautiful woman” or something like that and SRK said Katrina. She told them to record it quickly because his answer will change in 5 minutes and that you can’t trust it and you have to take it when you get it. SRK always gets a little taken aback by her behavior because it’s like she takes everything too seriously. Another incident I remember from a JTHJ interview where he was asked if Katrina ever gave any suggestions and if he took them and he started lying that she did and she was helpful and so on. She wouldn’t let it stand and said he’s lying – that she never told him anything ever and that she wouldn’t have the guts to and that he’s just making stuff up. SRK is never at a loss for words but sometimes you can tell even he is thinking “wtf?” in his head when she does stuff like this.
They must not click so well and have probably had to work to get along. But she does invite him to all her small house parties. He and Gauri spent Christmas at Kat’s house too with a few others.

      • Agree with this, I think she had some real professional insecurity around JTHJ, it comes across in the interviews – he tends to compliment Anushka’s acting and Katrina’s beauty and Kat calls him out on it, seems like a sticking point for her that he can’t find anything complimentary to say about her work. I got a totally different vibe from them in the Zero round, though. To me she read as feeling safer with Anushka and SRK, they were all playing off one another and Kat was going more out on a limb personally (also, conveniently, in keeping with her character). She got so much praise for her performance too – more than either of the other two – hopefully that helped her confidence and balanced the equation a bit.

  2. On the outside I think this Rohit-Farah movie can be a good move for SRK, because their my movies are popular and make money, but inside I’m screaming NOOOOOOO. They are the directors I like the least, they make stupid, empty movies I despise, and I don’t want SRK to do something like this.

    • I really like Farah and Rohit movies, even when they work with Shahrukh. At least, some of the time.

      • I’m cringing inside with Angie, more because of HNY than Dilwale, which did its job and made money (Gerua alone…still on constant replay three years later…how does that model work? does Red Chillies get a cut?). It probably feels like a safe choice, but it’s the opposite of the kind of deep character exploration/big chops acting challenge he’s gravitated to in recent years.

        • Well, it’s still a double role! He hasn’t had one of those in a while.

        • I’m the opposite. I would take Farah any day over Rohit. I’ve watched parts of HNY a lot of times. It’s actually pretty funny when you don’t have huge expectations. But Dilwale…never. I don’t even like Gerua.

  3. If Rohit Shetty must ruin a classic from the 70s,I’m glad he settled for Satte pe satte. It’s a nice little film and not something anybody is likely to be deeply attached to.I still cringe every time I see his Golmaal remake on TV.What a way to ruin a sensibly made classy comedy into a loud trashy comedy!Farah would surely sprinkle her trademark 70s references all over anyway.

    • Yeah, that was my reaction to the initial announcement. It’s already a silly illogical crazy movie, why not remake it as an even more silly illogical crazy movie? In fact, my only concern is that it won’t be silly enough. You really need to embrace the crazy and be “serious” about it, in a way, if you are going to make this kind of plot work.

    • They would be GREAT in this movie! They have similar comic styles. And heck, it’s a double role with two heroines (if they follow the original), Kareena could still be in it.

      • Ugh, do we really need to have Katrina in this? Why? What would be the thinking behind this? They are going to automatically come with negativity because of Zero. They also have no screen chemistry! Deepika doesn’t have a lot on her plate. Why not get her? She’s talked often for a year about wanting to do a fun movie but not getting any offers like that.
Or give a chance to somebody new like Radhika Apte. They had a spark in that short dance they did at the style awards. Or Tapsee! She doesn’t get big movies.. give her a chance to move up.

          • They’re in their 30s! Deepika and Radhika are the same age. Taapsee is the same age as Anushka. They don’t look like babies the way Alia does.
