Discussion Post: Which SRK Movie Do You Want Me to Review Next?

Not sure why it is (maybe everyone is preparing for the holiday on Sunday?) but my comments/views have been down. So I am going to be desperate and pull on the “SRKian” thread and see what pops up.

I hate it when my views go like this, they aren’t down overall, because my Kabir Singh review is getting so much traffic. But that’s just strangers driving by and then leaving, no one is spreading out and looking at my other stuff. It’s very depressing, like they read one thing and then decided they didn’t like me and had no interest in reading anything else.

Anyway, to cheer me up, a post that should spark some healthy debate!!!!! What Shahrukh movie should I review?

I have of course watched every Shahrukh movie ever, most of them multiple times, but I’ve only gotten around to writing a full official review of a handful of them. So you all get to help me decide what should be my next SRK review! Whenever it is that I next feel like writing a review. Here are the films I have not yet written about:

Deewana

Image result for deewana

His first movie to release! Second hero only, but easily overshadowed Rishi Kapoor the official “hero”.

Chamatkar

Shahrukh and Naseeruddin Shah! What could be better? Also, it’s a ghost story!

Maya Memsaab

Shahrukh’s only movie with Pooja Bhatt! Oh, and also Ramya Krishnan from Bahubali.

Army

  1. You say mustache as if it’s a good thing. I would be willing to avoid those movies for that reason alone.

Don and Don 2 for me.

    Like

    • Well, it is at least a notable thing.

Now I am wondering, did I review Don and Don 2 already? I feel like maybe I did. If I can find that review and take them off the list, what would be your next choice?

      Like

        • Excellent logic! And that would be a fun one to review, there is so much good and so much bad, that it is the rare review where I would get to right sincere praise and also angry diatribes.

  2. Oh my gosh…. So many choices. I vote for Ra.One or Paheli since they are both such different settings and situations than some of his other films.

But… it would be neat to do Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa since that was his favorite early one! Or Don, which could also give you space to do a comparison with the original at some point if you wanted.

Or Dil Se. KKHH. Mohabbatein. Okay now I’m just naming all of them and no longer being helpful.

    • It’s all helpful!

Ra.One might be fun, part of the series of “Margaret goes against the critical tide mostly because she sincerely believes in what she is saying but a small part also out of pure orneriness”. I like that movie! I think it achieved the goals it set out for itself and is a fun watch! Paheli, on the other hand, boring! Except for the sex bit.

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is such a fascinating interest statement on romance, I could do reams and reams of analysis on it, but maybe that would overload the poor delicate structure of the film.

Found my Don review! I knew I had one: https://dontcallitbollywood.com/2018/07/20/friday-classics-don-1-and-2-a-late-birthday-present-for-priyanka/

I enjoyed Paheli, too but that may have been all pretty colors and the sex scene 😉

Going to add the Don reviews to my reading list now that I’ve (finally, as of last week) gotten to seeing the original with Amitabh Bachchan

Ra.One made massive profits, and did very well in the overseas box office, but not at home, and was generally considered a “disappointment”. But I don’t know why! It’s a big silly superhero movie, did folks expect something different?

I contacted a journalist at The Hindu mentioning your website and if she could write an article about reviewers like you, who are not of Indian origin but watch and write detailed reviews. She said she will look into it. Hope something comes out of it and increases your views and comments.

Ra.one was released when I had my sabbatical, and so I know notjing about tjis film, except that it was a flop. But noe, after I have seen 2.0 with my son and I’m looking for something similar, maybe I could watch this film? What do you think? Is it good for kids?

    • Definitely good for kids. No animals for your son would be the only downside. And the hero’s father dies, I don’t know if that is too scary or not.

But there are lots of special effects and leaping around and fun stuff like that. And the central story/relationship is between a young boy and the robot superhero who eats batteries with ketchup for breakfast. If batteries with ketchup for breakfast because he is a robot is the kind of thing your son would like, then he’s at just the right age. If it is too stupid or too confusing for him, the rest of the film is at about that level too.

Ra.one is fun if you ignore the starting fantasy sequence. Those first 5-10 minutes are AWFUL. After that, it’s good.

      Like

      • I haven’t seen Robot, and didn’t even plan watching 2.0 but it was on Prime, and so I watched the trailer. My son was in the room with me, he saw the bird, liked it and wanted to see the movie . The beginning was super boring and not good for kids because there was violence, but the second half was fun, especially little robots riding pigeons. Now my son wants to see Robot, but I’m afraid it will be violent.

        Like

        • Yeah, I wouldn’t suggest Robot. There’s violence and stuff, and no animals to make-up for it. And also some odd plot motivation around a love triangle and things like that. I’d say Ra.One for kids over Robot, just because the plot driver is a father and son relationship, so easy for kids to understand.

  5. Wow we are really spoiled for choice, aren’t we?

Any of these would work for me, but my picks would be
    1. Deewana
So as to learn about Divya Bharti as an actress and in this performance. What made her so appealing and successful at that point in time, etc.
    2. Paheli
I haven’t watched it since it was in theaters, and it’s streaming now. I really liked it at the time, or maybe I liked the idea of it, I.e. major stars enacting a folk tale. Like historicals and mythology, folk tales are what Indians and the diaspora have in common, they should be an easy sell to both a local and global Indian audience, plus “ethnic” enough to appeal to the international-film-loving crowd (the type who like “world” cinema, as opposed to Indian cinema, if that makes sense), so it surprises me that this vast treasure trove of riches hasn’t been milked dry by Indian filmmakers already.
    2. Khkn
Is it still SRKs fav? Why so? I tried to get through it but couldn’t, your review will help me by giving me frame of reference to guide my viewing. Plus, the lead actress is so “south-Indian looking” that it’s surprising to me that she landed this role? Usually south Indian actresses who hit pay dirt in Bollywood are fair Tam-Brahm types (or approximate that look) or else have a more western coastal look (konkani, karnatak, mallu). Actresses who look so stereotypically tamil or telegu are usually ignored, beautiful as they might be. I think she eventually married and divorced director shekhar kapur and now has a third act as either an author or talk show host or both.
    3. Don 1/2
    4. Dil Se
    5. Ra One

    Liked by 1 person

    • Love your thinking! You may have convinced me to give Paheli more of a fair shake. But probably not (those turbans! that weirdly open ending!).

I talk a bit about Divya in my Dil Aashna Hai review. She is a fascinating person, I am tempted to do a 101 on her, but unfortunately her life is so short, there isn’t even enough for one post.

I love Kabhi Haa Kabhi Naa! It’s the story of the loser, such a rarity in Indian cinema. The same thing we are talking about now with Kabir Singh, that sometimes protagonist does not equal “hero” and that’s an artistic risk.

  6. I would vote either Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa or KKHH. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa because I didn’t think it was as good as everyone claimed it to be and I was wondering what I was missing about it. KKHH because I feel like your analysis would be really good and worth reading for it. I love when you analyze Karan Johar movies.

Also I just realized, did you just stop your DDLJ film analysis? I feel like you have a lot of new readers now if you wanted to restart that again.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I did stop DDLJ. I was always in and out because it was so time consuming I would have to take breaks when doing a scene by scene of something else or if I went on vacation or something. And then my last post got some really nasty comments that kind of left a bad taste in my mouth for the whole thing. If it was less work, or more popular, I would have kept going but since it was just a labor of love anyway, I lost my taste for it.

KKHH, I feel like I have far too much to say! I planned to do that scene by scene after I finished DDLJ, but since DDLJ looks like it is turning into a bit of a neverending task, maybe I could do a KKHH review in advance.

Interesting that a couple of people have asked for a KHKN review just to appreciate what is special, that might inspire me 🙂

  9. KKHH – just re-watched after not seeing it since early days before I knew anything, and kind of fascinated…the college part still bugged me, but I liked Kajol and Rani’s characters more this time, and the kid is really good, the father/daughter moments are super cute, he’s kind of peak beauty with that smile. The thing that struck me was that his character doesn’t really have an arc, it’s more Kajol’s movie in terms of agency, he almost has the traditional heroine role. Almost any other actor I think I would really dislike that character. SRK sells you on lack of self awareness but with lots of heart.

Chaahat – so much fun, so many bits to pick apart, great Anupam/SRK father/son scenes, and I love Pooja, and Ramya Krishnan as the perfect villainness, with bad dad Naseeruddin Shah. And that ending!

Maya Memsaab – I was so impressed by this performance, really different from the other roles he did at this stage, less hyper and gimmicky, more subtle intensity, and with layers as different pieces of the plot unfold. would be interested to hear your take.

Billu – there is so much I like about this movie, but overall it doesn’t work. Why not? Maybe it’s because the songs don’t belong in the same movie with the rest of the scenes?

Ram Jaane – you probably shouldn’t make people watch this but oh my gosh, the shirtless jacket look, the angst, the gallows speech, the gun under the wig…

Ra.One – the only one I haven’t seen that I know I will definitely watch, one day when the kids are in the right mood. just wondering, is there enough to say about a superhero action flick?

    • I can always find something to say about a movie!

KKHH really is Kajol’s movie. Her character has the growth and decisions and choices and so on. Shahrukh is the perfect dream man who stays the perfect dream man.

If KKHH puts Shahrukh in the love interest role, Chaahat makes him the threatened damsel in distress and I love it!

Maya Memsaab is just an odd movie! Even setting aside Shahrukh’s role, the whole thing is unusual, an art film with explicit sex and varying morals, but also with songs.

I love Billu! And I think it does work the way it is supposed to, but that way is ODD.

Oh Ram Jaane! It seems like even Shahrukh has forgotten it, his Raees promotions were all about “I’ve never played a gangster before”

  10. Wow! I had no idea you haven’t reviewed so many of these, because you’ve done so many lists of Shah Rukh’s movies, or Shah Rukh’s movies around a theme which seems to be the theme of his upcoming movie (I especially liked the ones of these you did before Fan), that I feel like you’ve reviewed them all.

    My votes would be:
    1. Deewana: it seems like such an interesting blend of old and new as a story. Also Divya Bharti in all her tragic glory

    2. Ram Jaane: because I love this movie for Shah Rukh’s 1,000% commitment to the performance. Also his chemistry with Juhi, even when her character doesn’t love him, is just magical to me. And we can trash the friend, who is meant to be the bad guy, but who treats Ram Jaane AND Juhi as objects throughout the movie.

    3. PBDHH: such an uneven movie, but so prescient in it’s critique of news media as celebrity. Would be a great double feature with Broadcast News!

    4. Ra.One: so much good heart, a fun plot and effects, yet so much weird or offensive humor (do most boys daydream about their dads being sexy and rescuing sexy women for sexy times? do all Southern Indian men have curly hair and eat noodles with curd with their fingers? is pelvic thrusting really that humorous? can Indian movie stars wear dreads/braids in songs or is that always super-racist?)

    5. KHNH or KKHH because both are iconic and I’d love to read your take on them.

    Like

    • Oh oh! PBDHH is a fascinating one in terms of news because it feels like it is looking forward but actually it is looking back, The inspiration was His Girl Friday/Front Page just updated for TV news instead of newspapers. Isn’t that fascinating? At least, it is to me because I love His Girl Friday and Shahrukh has always had such a Cary Grant vibe. Plus it’s a time when we can see Shahrukh took an existing property and made it more feminist, which is awesome.

      • I remember it being inspired by His Girl Friday. A movie I remember enjoying but it’s been a long time now since I watched. I still think PBDHH was adapted nicely for India, with the politicians being in bed with pet broadcasters, and with the 24 hour news cycle, where broadcasters “help the news along” if there isn’t enough going on, and celebrity anchors become the story instead of reporting on the story.

        Like

        • His Girl Friday was one of our favorite movies growing up, I think I’ve probably seen it close to 100 times. It’s amazing how many themes in it are still relevant to media today, just with TV news instead of newspapers. The biggest change (which I find fascinating) between HGF and PBDHH is that the reporters have bosses. In PBDHH, Cary Grant is either an owner-editor, or does such a good job that the newspaper owner doesn’t care what he does. While PBDHH has the owners not be news people or care about the stories, only care about making money.

  12. I am surprised that you haven’t reviewed so many SRK movies. I vote for Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. It is such a charming movie and very different from anything else that was being made at the time. I am surprised by so many people saying that they did not like it, maybe because it speaks to young people in India at a very specific time in Indian history. I also find it cute in how SRK is so physical in a role that doesn’t require him to be physical at all. He is just randomly jumping around and doing flips. Not sure if this was a directorial choice or just early SRK energy, but it really adds to the restlessness of the character.

With regards to your low comments/views, do you see any link with your Salman 101 posts and lowered views? I am fairly new to your blog but for the last few months I have been visiting a few times a day and commenting once every 2-3 posts. But between the Salman 101 and the Kabir Singh posts, something changed for me. It was not that you disagreed with me, it was more that you only seemed to engage in discussion with comments that agreed with you. I come to your comments section because I like the discussion. I am not really interested in just putting out my point of view. I am sure you have a lot going on in your life besides this blog, so I completely understand if you don’t want to get into lengthy discussions. I am just giving you my reasons for why I have been barely commenting for the last week or two. As you rightly predicted, you can always count on SRK to bring people like me out of hiding 🙂

    Like

    • I think you are right about the discussion. I don’t like getting in to fights, so at a certain point with comments I just remove myself when it gets too contentious. Which isn’t to say I disagree with your opinion exactly, more that I can see where you are coming from and it is not where I am coming from and my point of view was already explained in the post so I am sort of at a loss as to what to say in response beyond “interesting points, thanks for commenting!” which is boring.

More than that, I think this particular blog community is always happiest when we are cheerfully mostly in agreement. Right? People come here for discussions like this one where it is all happy. I don’t set out to write controversial posts, the Kabir Singh reaction honestly surprised me (unpleasantly). If I had known it was going to happen, I might not have written the review at all. Again, not the specifics of it or anything, just that fact that there was controversy. Why invite that on to my blog?

But thank you for commenting here! And I love your note about KHKN! You’ve got me thinking about it, and he does that stuff a lot in the really early films, doesn’t he? I can picture in Maya Memsaab the same kind of stuff, just random needless flips and jumping around. Not so much in Dil Aashna Hai, but then it wouldn’t have fit the character in that one. And in Deewane he already had a lot of jumping around written in to the script.

Further, since your policy is “let me reply first, then you can reply”, it’s completely possible that a rich / thoughtful conversation or debate can ensue amongst your commenters but is being awaited and abated by your lack of initial response to allow it to kick off. Does that make sense?

        Like

        • It does. And that is normally my policy. But on some posts I feel like I have just run out of responses. Which isn’t to say someone else couldn’t respond with a new idea, I have just run out of things to say.

I’m not sure what to do at that point, I can either not respond at all, or say “thank you for commenting, I have no response beyond what I already said but I hope someone else will reply to you.” I certainly appreciate it when other people reply to those comments and the discussion continues.

  13. Dil Se, because I love it, but don’t understand parts of it. He’s in love with her, but she seems to not be into him at all; most of the time she seems to be trying to get as far away from him as possible, and yet people describe it as a love story. Odd.

Paheli is one of my favorites but there is a lot of ambiguity in the ending, and the morality of it all is puzzling, thus worthy of analysis. And it has my favorite Shah Rukh sex scene: the morning after, when Rani tickles him and he giggles, is especially charming.

    • I read an article years and years ago suggesting the three central characters in Dil Se (Shahrukh, Preity, Manisha) as stand ins for the regions of India from which they come. Shahrukh is Delhi, not just the North but the strong central government. He desires and must possess Manisha, the Northwest. She feels a bond with him and a closeness with him, but the power dynamic is so strange and their history so fraught that she can never really be with him. And Preity is Kerala, free and happy and strong, able to relate to Delhi as an equal. But never having the same close crazed passionate relationship that Delhi has with the Northwest.

And yes Paheli! The morality is so interesting, because the central relationship (Rani and Shahrukh) is honest and equal and just. But what is he doing to Other Shahrukh? And what is he doing to Other Shahrukh’s family?

Also.. like everyone else.. I would also love for you to continue the DDLJ series.. but I can see the effort and time it takes from you.. but its such a beautiful film and you write it with such love yourself.. that I can’t help but hope that you continue :))

    • KKHH is great. And obviously one that I can write about without needing to rewatch because I have seen it soooooooooooooo many times.

  16. I commented on your series announcement post before reading this one. I’m going backwards I guess! I would love to see reviews and discuss just about any of these but I want to add a vote for you to continue your DDLJ scene-by-scene, however long that takes. I have loved reading it

    • Huh. Did not realize there was still so much passion for the scene by scene. I’ll have to think about it.
