It’s too hot to think, so I gave myself a day off from writing today. But I did all kinds of other great stuff!
I woke up early because of the blinding sun, and the little dog jumping on me saying “let’s go out! let’s start the day!”. Did the thing where you put shorts on over your PJs and pretend you are dressed, stumbled out with the dog, stumbled back, tried to go back to sleep, no luck. Got dressed and hit the road!
First stop, post office to mail my sister’s birthday present! There’s no parking so I always park at the auto store down the block. This time I finally gave in to the guilt and went in and bought something. Car air freshener, the only thing I really need/want.
Then, off to the dollar store! To get all kinds of things, I intended to just get a sink stopper and some sponges, but they have EVERYTHING! I got two new spatulas, a bunch of dog toys, and a pedicure kit.

Next to the dollar store, the good Goodwill store! I got two more “oh my gosh it is so hot I don’t care that it looks like I am wearing a nightgown” big loose knit dresses, and a kooky lampshade.

And finally, the library! Which was so cool and pleasant I got sucked in. Got the DVDs I wanted right away, and then just sat and read my book for an hour in the nice air conditioning.
Finally home, carried lampshades and a million dollar store purchases up the stairs, put everything away and admired my lampshades, then took the dog for a walk.

And finally sat down in my own living room and tried not to overheat. And decided to use my new pedicure supplies and gave myself a nice pedicure.

And now I am sitting exactly between two fans and listening to the little birdies go tweet-tweet and watching the dog sleep. It’s not bad! But I still don’t feel like writing anything real. And thus, this post!

`
I love the lampshade.

The dollar store is the best for impulse buys, because you can never over spend!

Did you see this statement from Zaira Wasim? This makes me sad. There were so many great Muslim actresses in Hindi film but she thinks she can’t act and keep her faith.

It sounds like the faith she is following is more of a cosmic identity and certainty within herself. I’m glad she is seeking that rather than giving herself over to work and fame at such a young age.
Did you follow the situations that came up after Dangal? She was turned into a symbol by both sides of the religious debates, trolled by extremists for having cut her hair and being a “bad” young Muslim woman, and then on the other hand turned into a symbol by politicians of the “good” Muslim woman who doesn’t wear a Hijab and is “free”. It was all horrible and she wrote a social media post which she then took down that was a kind of confused apology for not doing the right thing and making people unhappy. I think she might be having a rough emotional ride through her teen years anyway, and dealing with fame is not helping the process at all. But dedicating herself to faith and inner learning might, and certainly taking a few years off to figure things out is a great idea for any child star turned adult actress.
Anyway, with all of this, I suspect it is less about Zaira not being able to act and keep her faith and more about being a young Muslim woman making her into more of a target than that identity was for women in the past. And the attacks she is dealing with are what is shaking her inner sense of self and faith.
