Saturday Small Talk: Talk Amongst Yourself While I Try to Survive the Heat

Happy Saturday! After a slow start, summer is officially here and it is all 90 degrees weather and thunderstorms. Which means I will either be spending the day huddled in my air conditioned bedroom, or running as many errands as possible in air conditioned stores. But you all can talk on the internet even if I am unavailable!

Things to talk about! Karan confirmed Dostana 2, yaaaay! With Karthik and Janhvi, and an unknown third lead. What do we think about this? What should the plot be? Who should be the third lead?

Also, more song remakes! Which do you care about more, remaking this song with Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon with Badshah and Diana Penty:

Or remaking “Tip Tip Barse Pani” with Akshay and Raveena Tandon, now with Akshay and Katrina Kaif:

And finally, new Super 30 song! It’s….odd. It mostly makes sense, Hrithik is a poor boy brought in to be the top teacher and make loads of money for a scuzzy test prep company, he enjoys having money, his scuzzy boss brings in dancing girls, and so on. But then there are guns? That’s where I get lost. What do you think?

  1. It is also very hot and humid here!

Random thoughts after watching Luka Chuppi:
    1. Karthik Aryan when he smiles looks just like that dude from Parks and Rec. (Adam Scott? Amy Poehler’s love interest. the internet tells me this is Adam Scott.)
    2. I’ve just realized I’m not as interested lately in the young romances of two young people starting out. Maybe I’m old. I like Kriti, and Karthik was charming as well, but their roles are a little bland. Karthik’s mother and Pankaj Mishra had more interesting parts in the story and did more with them. I kind of wanted to spend more time with Pankaj and his conwoman love interest. Did also like Aparshakti Khurana as the Muslim friend, he had nice comic timing.
    3. The trend for rom coms seems to be these smaller, almost TV sitcom scale stories, with only a couple of songs. They’re probably cheap and quick to make. Maybe also open up space for a different kind of actor like Rajkummar Rao and Ayushman and Karthik – you need next door boy charm and sincerity, vs. the more epic type. (Karthik can dance, though! Kind of a waste on just the one song.)

    • Great thoughts!

      1. Yes! Agree! And Adam Scott’s big break role was I think more like Karthik, snarky and rebellious.

      2. You’re right! We haven’t had a more mature romance in a long time, one where they are both working professionals in the world and not little babies getting ready for marriage. Which might be related to your 3rd point, with all these small grounded films it is just realistic for the couple to be younger because most people in India get married young. Well, “young” for me, meaning before 30.

      3. Raabta! watch Raabta! It flopped terribly, but it was super epic with songs and stuff and I loved it.

      • I’ve wanted to see Raabta because I liked the songs but I haven’t figured out how yet.

Agreed the just starting out love makes sense for them to be young, I think I’m craving the slightly older set, the second chance or conflict within marriage, people who are grown up and have other entanglements and responsibilities.

        • Raabta is supposed to be on Prime, but who knows if that is true (stupid Prime!) or if you can rent it without having a membership. Anyway, it’s on einthusan too.

We need more big ridiculous love stories! The ones that don’t have to be “real” but are just silly.
