Shahrukh Summer/Women Directors Week: Which is Shahrukh’s Best Saroj Khan Song?

Last one! And also the first one. Saroj begat Farah who begat Vaibhavi. And all three women helped turn non-dancing SRK into someone who can at least athletically fake his way through things.

Have I complained about how hard it is to find credits for choreographers? SO HARD! And it shows an innate disrespect for their role. And also an innate confusion over their role. Some songs are directed primarily by the main director, some by the choreographer, sometimes the choreographer merely gives the dance steps and the main director puts together the rest of the song. And almost always a film is a mix of all these things, plus with additional choreographers thrown in. I got caught and miss-credited “Kaike Paan” to Farah earlier because she is listed as “choreographer” in the credits of Don. But no! She did some (probably the “Main Hoon Don” song just based on filming style), and Saroj did some, and other people did other stuff.

These are the songs that I am almost complete sure Saroj did, but I could still be wrong. And I am definitely leaving stuff out just because I don’t know 100% that it was hers. Like, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. She split choreography duties with P.L. Raj, who did which song? “Meri Mehbooba”, should that be included? Saroj and Ahmed Khan are both listed as choreographers on Pardes, and it feels Saroj-y, but that’s not a sure argument for including it.

Anyway, this is the best I can do! If you have seen interviews with Sarojji or Shahrukh where they specifically discuss working on other songs together, let me know what I am missing and I will add it!

“Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen”

“Meri Mehbooba”

“Khaike Paan Banaraswala”

“Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna”

“Tu Mere Saamne”

“Pal Pal Hai Bhaari”

  1. After writing so much about her during the past few days, the headline and the first para both misspell the choreographer’s name as Soraj instead of Saroj.

  2. I don’t know if it’s because of the comments/ views but I’m personally disappointed that Women Directors’ Week has mostly devolved into SRK Summer Women Directors’ Week.

    • I’m sorry you are personally disappointed. I thought this was a fun way to acknowledge the contributions and educate people about the three leading female choreographers. As you point out in your above comment, I wrote a lot about Saroj Khan this week.

I also hope that people can tell the difference between a light song post and the lengthy serious posts I am putting up every day on a different female director. A post like this takes me about 20 minutes to put together, my post on Paap early today took me about 4 hours to write.

  3. This one is really tough. I think it has to be Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna, because it is such a great song, and the dancing so perfectly fits with the story the movie is telling. But I have a lot of affection for Kaali Kaali Aankhen and Tu Meri Saamne. My daughter and I counted once, and I think Juhi wears 17 different outfits in Tu Meri Saamne. And the lyrics are so spicy!

    • Tu Meri Saamne is such a great song, and the perfect example of a song that works a lot better out of context. It’s fun it’s cheerful it’s sexy, and you kind of forget that it is the fantasy of a dangerous stalker.

  4. Can I be non-technical about my choice? What gets me out of my seat every time is Khaike Paan. The choreography may not be the most difficult to do, but it’s the combination of energy, dance, atmosphere, and “fun” that I observe as a viewer that gets to me the most and that makes me get up and dance with them. I also find that Shah Rukh is really spot on in telling his Paan Banarasawala anecdote to in such literal terms that I don’t even need to understand the text (which I don’t). For that alone, I’d say it’s great. And how he (and everyone else) are just letting go and having so much fun, as banal as it may sound, is very, very therapeutic to me.

And for that reason my vote goes to Khaike Paan’s performance. I compared it to the original with Amitabh’s version of Don in that song and wow, the difference is astonishing. Not saying one is better than the other. But the passion and energy and silliness in SRK’s version is what what releases endorphins for me.

    • Of course you can be non-technical!!!! And that is a great song. I love the way his sweat stains keep growing showing that it was all shot in multiple takes without a/c or cool down. Just gives more of a feel of a fun wild dance instead of something practiced.
