Smoldering, Burning, Cold, Cool, Warm or Tepid: Which Actor is Which Temperature?

What a fun sick day challenge for me to make this post and for you all to successfully solve it!

We talked smoldering already, but I realized there are other temperatures.

Using SRK photos as an example:

Smoldering

Rajkummar Rao, Warm or Air Temperature only

Sushant Singh Rajput, he can do smoldering or cool or warm, but not burning or cold

Aditya Roy Kapoor, very good at warm, can’t really do anything else

Shahid Kapoor, the whole thermometer worth of temperatures!

Imraan Khan, only air temperature, could never manage even up to warm

Aamir Khan, amazing when he does smoldering or cool veering to icy cold, but hard to find those roles

Salman Khan, the very best at “warm”, occasionally can pull off smoldering, can’t sell “cold”

Vijay Deveronkanda, I don’t think he is capable of cooling down past “warm”

Dulquer Salmaan, no extremes, warm or cool, no cold or hot or even smoldering

Prithviraj, he can do every temperature, but warm veering into smoldering is his sweet spot

Ranbir Kapoor, air temperature only

Ranveer Singh, he can do “burning”, and he can do “warm” and he can do “air temperature”, but somehow he can’t do “cool” or “smoldering”. And definitely not “cold”

Feel free to disagree, and definitely feel free to keep going with your own interpretations of respective temperatures.

Or, using my example, go ahead and pick out your favorite temperature of SRK.

  1. I like this topic (not liking that you have to go through a cold πŸ˜‰ ).
Interesting that you did not post (came across?) a trepid behaviour…
How do you define “air temperature”?

    • Oh shoot, I changed “Tepid” to “air temperature” when I actually wrote the post. Sickness brain!

That would be a scene where the actor brings no particular emotional temperature to it, just a casual chatting kind of moment.

  2. I don’t think Shahid can do cold, cool or genuine warmth. In all these, he ends up imitating SRK. I’m not sure about smoldering either. Anyways, this post requires finding pictures & embedding which is difficult. So I’m just going to post my opinions.DQ can be quite cool. Prithviraj can never be atmospheric & just about managed to be warm in Koode. Fahadh can be anything- Smouldering (Iyyobinte Pusthakam,Varathan), burning (assuming this is abt getting angry? Artist,22FemaleKottayam climax), cold(Kumbalangi & several of his older movies),cool(Annayum Rasoolum,Athiran)
    warm(Maheshinte Prathikaram), atmospheric (Thondimuthal,Njan Prakashan,Amen).
I also want to add Vijay Sethupathy who is so good at being atmospheric, warm and cool, but can’t proceed to higher temperatures. Prabhas is so good in the higher & lower temperatures until he hits warm, but just like Prithviraj cannot be atmospheric.I’m on the fence about him being cold in Billa.

    • I love all your comments and agree with them! Well, except for Shahid, we have to agree to disagree there.

With Prithviraj, do you think his lack of ability to be atmospheric is an acting flaw or just that his charisma and screen presence is too high? I feel like young Amitabh (for instance) was always so powerful onscreen that he could never even do “warm” let alone “atmospheric”. But old Amitabh can do it perfectly, a very relaxed and natural presence. Maybe if that is the problem Prithviraj will age into being able to be average? On the other hand, I feel like Indrajith is excellent at both warmth and atmospheric.

When is DQ cool? I felt the heat in a lot of his movies, but I never felt the kind of coldness. On the other hand, I haven’t seen all his films.

Can my beloved Nivin do anything besides warm and atmospheric? I’m not even sure if he can manage rising up to a smolder, let alone actual heat.

For Prabhas, I think he was supposed to be “cold” in some places in Saaho? But it just didn’t come off right.

      • Wasn’t Nivin smolder in OSO or in Premam? And there was this movie he made about gangster, Richie, I haven’t seen it, but he was kinda hot in it.

        • Hmm. Was he really smoldering in OSO, or was he only smoldering through her eyes and he was really sweet? OR is that splitting hairs?

          • He was smoldering and anyone could see this. Do you remember his entry, and how the nasty guys were afraid of him? Or when he talk with the policeman? 100% smolder.
I can wait to see him in Moothon. On the poster he looks though and angry.

          • I think this may have to be a deeper discussion post! Nivin: smoldering or always just “nice”? Prithviraj: is he ever cool? Vijay Sethupathi: is he ever hot?

      • DQ was quite cool in ABCD,Bangalore Days, but he hasn’t gone cold yet.Prithviraj & Prabhas are just too powerful onscreen, they can be warmed down by good directors but never made ordinary.Agree about Sahoo & Prabhas.Someone give him a good baddy role. But i feel Prabhas is very very atmospheric offscreen while Prithviraj doesn’t go easy offscreen also. Apparently Nivin is quite the smolderer(here- I invented a handy word) in Muthoon. But wasn’t he quite smoldeing in the college portions of Premam & Om Shanti Oshana?

        • Imagine Bahubali with the Rana-Prabhas roles reversed. That would be a cold Prabhas that I could believe!

        • Sure “cuddly” fits under the “warm” subcategory? At least, it does for me.

  3. I honestly admire each actor who can convey – in the eye of the viewer – the whole scale of “temperatures” πŸ™‚ (ShahRukh definitely belongs to them…for many other Indian actors I lack the experience to voice an opinion)

    • In Indian film in particular, it is so important! So many different emotions required to play.

  4. I really like warm SRK in general and also when he’s at an extreme, like burning or cold – he has so much intensity at those ranges

    Like

    • I was thinking about it, and in real life SRK seems to always present himself as “Warm”. He’s not trying to be cool, or cold (like a celebrity who shuts himself off from the public). I love that Shahrukh, but in films he is almost always in the more intense level. Except DZ, maybe that’s why I like him in that so much?

      • Isn’t it a prerogative of his character Jug as a therapist to channel the own intensity in favour of the patient/client? It is still palpable nevertheless, I think.

        • Oh yeah, it was the perfect way to play that character. But such an interestingly different kind of performance!
