Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Watch the Rain

It’s been raining and raining and raining. Albie Dog is depressed, I’m depressed, my parents are stuck out of town with a flight delayed 24 hours, and the streets are all flooding. I think I will either spend the day at home and sleep in, or I will go to the movies for the day.

Here’s some questions to chat about!

It’s raining! What is your favorite rain song?

I may change my mind, but right now I think “Aankhen Se Tune” from Ghulam.

Historic epic film coming out on Tuesday for Gandhi Jayanti, what is your favorite Indian historic film?

So many choices! I think I will pick Veer, just because no one else will and I feel sorry for the poor thing.

Dev Anand’s birthday was a couple of days ago, what is your favorite Dev Anand movie?

I’m torn between Guide, CID, and Jewel Thief. But I think I am going to be shallow and pick Jewel Thief.

And is there anything else you want to bring up on a rainy Saturday?

I have a thing! Want to see a picture of Albie Dog during a thunderstorm? He’s not thrilled.

  1. Dev Anand = I’ve only seen Guide and Hare Ram Hare Krishna. I like the latter just a smidge more, but I like them both.

Rain songs = these come to mind, mainly for the ways they play with and use the rain

I just watched the Downton Abbey movie last night in the cinema hall. Such a nostalgia trip to spend 2 hours with these beloved characters. The story and plot were absolutely irrelevant to the experience – it was just all about watching these characters be, act, interact, scheme, live their lives, and respond to circumstances in the moment in the different ways that they do.
Oh and my goodness, the fabulous clothes and jewelry! It was like Indian attire insofar as its sumptuous attention to fabric, print, jewels, craftsmanship, and detailing. Every scene had me thought-bubbling “OMG I WANT THAT DRESS!!” I really wish that western semi-formal and formal wear was this rich, fun, and exquisite nowadays, but today’s emphasis on bodycon, minimalism, and solid colors has really taken the artistry out of western fashion.
Apparently it’s the #1 movie in the USA right now. Maybe it could point a way forward to a new trend in a streaming world… TV -> movie? First present a tv or streaming series to the audience, get them familiarized with the characters, setting, and raison detre of the property from the comfort of their living rooms or phones. Then once they live your show, you can keep them coming to the cinema with episodes on film. This is a good way to get producers to fund unusual female or lgbtiq led films. Who wouldn’t want to see Killing Eve or Marvelous Mrs Maisel or Made in Heaven on film now?

    • Oh, you are making me think about seeing Downton Abbey in theaters! It feels so frivolous when there are all those Indian movies I should be watching, but it would be such a cozy rainy day watch.

Interesting thought about streaming to movies. Veronica Mars, Serenity, they already did it. I think people avoid it because of the thought “no one will watch the movie unless they already know the show”, but with the way streaming has changed viewing habits (people can easily watch any show they want at any time they want), and the way movies are more and more a niche market, it could work.

  2. Oh, ugh, it’s raining here too, which means I can’t dry my clothes, which is problematic right before school starts.

My favorite rain song: as ever, going to go old school with Rim Jhim Gire Saawan. From Dev Anand I’ve only watched Guide and CID and I’d probably pick Guide. Maybe Jewel Thief should go on the list.

    • I love my radiator heat. Once it turns on, clothes dry faster inside than outside. I just have to put on laundry for a little bit longer and it will either keep raining and be cold enough for radiators, or stop raining and I can dry outside.

My second choice for a rain song was also “Rhim Jin”, but the “modern” one from 1942: A Love Story.

  3. There are many hit rain songs in Telugu and Hindi that are to my liking – but my two altime favorite are –
    1. Evergreen song from Geetanjali – the music, the dance, the rhythm, the lyrics, everything –

    2. From Chiranjeevi’s Daddy – the girl was so cute. Started loving this after my daughter is born.

  4. Favorite Dev Anand movie – Jewel Thief, Hare Rama Hare Krishna
Favorite historic epic Indian movie –
If you say epic, there’re many Telugu classics based on Mahabharata & Ramayana epics including the altime best Maya Bazaar – all my favorites.
If you say historic as in related to kings/persons of significance from history – again there are many classics including Mahamantri Timmarusu, Tenali Ramakrishna, Mahakavi Kalidas etc.
If you say historic as in during British rule or Independence movement – I pick The Legend of Bhagat Singh (Ajay Devgan), Alluri Sitaramaraju (Telugu).
If you say historic as a mix of present and past, I like Rang De Basanti and Hey Ram.
