Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I See Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy Again!

I invited my parents to watch Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy with me, we’ll see if it works out. I am very nervous, they have extremely unpredictable taste. Oh, and I promised an Asoka review, it’s going up sometime today.

Things to discuss! Along with anything else you want to bring up, this is your open space.

Drive song teaser is out! In case you came in late, Drive was announced over a year ago starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Jacqueline Fernandez, produced by Dharma, and directed by Tarun Mansukhani (who made Dostana) and supposed to be a fun action film. Based on just that information, I was excited! Fun director, solid lead actors, and a genre that is easy to make a light fun hit. And all with the Dharma gloss and money. And then the movie finished filming and Sushant and Jacqueline moved on to other things, and yet it did not come out. Release dates would be announced and then pushed back and then announced again, no one seemed to be really interested in promoting it particularly. And now it is going straight to Netflix. And instead of a trailer or anything like that, we have this one grainy song video that looks more like something someone shot on their cell phone with their friends than a professional video. And not in a good way, in a bad way.

At least, that’s what I think! What do you think? Also, can anyone confirm whether or not that is Isreal?

Other thing to discuss! Every other year I have done SRK movies for Friday all month. But I am running out of movies I haven’t reviewed yet! What are your votes for SRK movies I haven’t reviewed yet? Assuming I finally finish last night’s Asoka review and post it today?

And a non-Indian film related questions that I need advice on:

I am considering starting Poldark, should I?

  1. I love the Poldark series. Perhaps not so much the last one, but the others kept me enthralled. Definitely worth giving it a try.

And for reviews – I’m sure there are still one or two worth reviewing… or seven or eight…or….

If the Reviews index is up to date I’d vote for:
    Main Hoon Naa
    Kal Ho Naa Ho
    Dil Se
    Khabi Alvida Na Kehna
    Don

    • Tragically, the review index is not up to date. I’ve already reviewed all of those. Although, on the other hand, that means you have fun reviews to read!

I will take your Poldark opinion under advisement. I was interested in the show when it started but never got around to it, and now that it is ending I kind of want to watch it start to finish.

  2. Perhaps instead of a review next week you can update the index? I remember now you have done PBDHH and VZ recently too. How about Baadshah?

I rewatched PBDHH last week, first time in a long time. It struck me that he is quite brave in some of these themes he picks. Although the basis is always love of his country, to demonstrate it by exposing corrupt politicians and stupid greedy media is a risky path. In Swades it was inept local government and backward elements of culture, I won’t even talk about Raees. And in Fan he risked insulting his fans. You can never accuse him of always playing it safe.

    • I think I have finally reached the tipping point where I can just do an index of all his films and plan on having a review for all of them by his birthday. I am pretty sure there are only about 6 movies I am missing at this point. Exciting!

  3. The more I think about Drive the more I’m curious about this movie. How bad can it be? Somebody in Dharma greenlighted this production and I’m sure they put a lot of money in it, so what went wrong?
Also I just read Tarun Mansukhani also did Koochie Koochie Hota Hai, and it was never released. I was sure this movie was out years ago, but maybe I confused it with Roadside Romeo.

    • Koochie Koochie Hota Hai I always assumed died due to post-production animation issues, since it was the first/only animated film Dharma made. But wow, if this is Tarun too, maybe it is just him? And he’s off Dostana 2. Do you think maybe it is because Karan is too loyal to his protegees? Not willing to cut Tarun loose even after failure after failure?

      • I don’t understand Karan anymore. I always thought he is smart businessman but after Kalank (and his interview where he said it’s his fault because he love the movie so much he didn’t see any problems in it), and now after Drive I start doubting him.Maybe he is distracted by his kids, or has a boyfriend or has some problems..But I don’t think he would purposely waste money just to make his protegee feels better.

  4. 1) Yes, that song was filmed on location in Israel. The swimming pool is on the roof of the Carlton Hotel, quite glamorous.
    2) could the release issues be due to exactly that? The Israel locations? A number of the markets for Indian films might not show it. Now, that’s not true of India itself so maybe not
    3) I think the amateur look is deliberate. Feels like it’s supposed to look like something friends on vacation would shoot.
    4) and lastly, do we know anything about drives plot?
Oh, and I’m sorry to say, I disliked Poldark, old and new.

    • Huh, I hadn’t thought about the Isreal locations. There have been plenty of other controversial Indian films where they just blur flags and such, so that part of it wouldn’t necessarily stop them. In terms of actual trade restrictions and stuff, I have no idea how that would work. I mean, it’s India produced obviously, but it is funneling money into the Isreal economy, not sure if that qualifies for trade restrictions.

We know nothing about the plot, I think. Based on the poster announcement from ages ago it looked like a fun glitzy action film. But then this looks like a casual friends on vacation realistic kind of thing. So I am at a complete loss. Here’s the poster:

That old poster was very cool. I remember I hadn’t been interested in this film till I saw this photo and I thought: oh It can be different and good.

        • Yes! I was all excited for a cool car chase movie with Sushant and Jacqueline, and instead it’s this hand held camera realistic looking thing. Blech!

    • I heard that it was supposed to be a remake of the Hollywood movie Drive that had Ryan Gosling in it but I’m not sure if that was true or just a rumor.

      • I feel like it must have been a rumor. If it was a remake, surely they would have changed the title?

        • Yeah, that’s what I thought. I do think it’s a rumor too but I’ve seen it mentioned on quite a few of the articles about the movie so I’m not sure anymore. I don’t remember Dharma mentioning it’s an official remake or anything though

    • They said they did, but they also had my pre-school art work professionally framed, so I’m not sure I trust their opinions.

  5. I never really had any interest in Drive, but I really like the vibe of the Makhna video, and the song itself. Definitely looks like it was shot in Israel, and I saw something on the Dharma Instagram that basically confirmed it.

    • See, I was the reverse! When it was a silly shiny action film, I was super interested. But the loosey-goosey vibe of Makhna has turned me off.
