Recommendations Needed! Movies With Bad Bosses, Movies For When You Are Sick, Action Movies for Kids!

I had three separate “what should I watch?” questions on the Monday post, and I want to throw them out to all of you! Let’s crowdsource these suckers.

First challenge! Procrastinatrix is dealing with work stress. What movies can she watch about bad/good bosses and how to handle them?

I already thought of Rocket Singh and Sui Dhaaga, but after that I am stumped. What can you suggest?

Second challenge! Alisa/BollywoodNewbie is sick. What movies can you suggest for when you are sick?

I already suggested Happy New Year. It’s happy, it’s silly, and you enjoy it a little more if you can’t think that much.

Third challenge! Genevieve has little kids who greatly enjoyed Bang Bang. What other happy light kid friendly action movies can they watch?

I suggested Singham and Tiger Zinda Hai. What else?

    1994 (telugu) version available in Hotstar

    Silly movie : Michael Madana Kama Rajan ( a”crazy” mohan & kamal collobaration — as Silly as you can get )

    Kids friendly action movie: any Jackie Chan movie !?
    I liked Balls of Fury but thats just me

    • I’ve been trying to watch a Jackie Chan movie myself (I’ve gotten all of 15 minutes into Legend of Drunken Master), because I’ve never seen one. Duh, I should show one to the kids! Their father might even watch with them.

      • Oh oh! Watch Miracle! It’s a fun movie in general, way more accessible than some of his others, and it was remade in India as Singh is King so you can do a cool comparison watch if you want (they are different enough movies that I think you/your kids will enjoy them both).

      • I watched Drunken Master with my kids and they liked. My favorite Jackie Chan movie is Supercop, co-starring Michelle Yeoh. Not on Netflix but you can buy on Google, YouTube, and Amazon.

  4. I was going to say 2.0 for kids, but then I remembered there are some creepy murders in it. But the second half is mostly funny and OTT and my son liked it. We also started Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. Never finished so I can’t say if there is something not suitable for children, but the part we saw (the protagonist’s childhood) was fun and kids friendly.
    Maari 2 – I think it’s not too violent, and there is a cute boy in the second half.

    Movies to watch while being sick – this one is tricky. For me it was Dhadkan, but I know Alisa didn’t like it much. If I remember well you liked Manam, and I hate this film with all my heart and in my opinion it’s too confusing (especially durning illness)
    Luka Chupi – not complicated, colorful I think it’s good.
    Phillauri – to cry the illness out
    RX100 – beautiful faces , the protagonist go shirtless, nice music
    From older movies: Judaai and Beta

    Movies with bad bosses: Anil Kapoor and Sridevi Laadla (or the telugu original version with Chiranjeevi – Gharaana Mogudu )

    • I liked Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota a lot and plan to watch it with my kids. It’s funny in a modern offbeat way. It’s definitely different, but I like how it pokes at the idea of the invincible fight scene by showing how dangerous it is to the protagonist to not be able to feel pain. The final fight gets pretty intense, there’s a bone break that feels more realistic than these things usually get. My sons are 6 and 9 and it’s a bit of a close call but I think they can handle it, but then I let them watch a lot of superhero movies with moderate violence so it depends on your tolerance.

  5. Bad bosses : any gangster movie. From Don with his farewell handshake to departing staff , to any villain boss who’s henchmen didn’t meet their performance indicators and got fired permanently, they all urgently need refresher training on good management practice.

    ShahRukh in Baadshah would be fun to work for. Okay, there is the possibility of falling into the clutches of villains, but they do such crazy things, work would always be interesting.

    Film for kids: Boothnath, Housefull 1 & 2 ( 3 was pretty bleargh), Main Hoon Naa ( skip the part wihen Raghavan executes the Pakistani prisoners)

    • Oh, Don is the BEST movie! Thank you for the idea! If you watch it identifying with Don, the whole thing is about setting his superiors against each other because they never do the work and take all the credit, and then taking over the business for himself.

      And I don’t know what I was thinking, Baadshah is also a great movie for kids, right? All that silliness.

  6. For Procrastinatrix:
    This is a surprisingly hard question.
    Good boss dealing with a tough situation: Artcile 15. This has both Ayushman being a boss to the other police officers but also to his maid.
    Bad boss: Light-hearted and funny: Yes Boss (but I suspect Procrastinatirx has likely already seen this).
    Difficult but ultimately awesome boss: Ratna Pathak in Khoobsoorat (plus this has Fawad!).
    An old one with lots of boss characters: If you are a fan of Dharmandra, Mala Sinha, and spy movies: I highely reccomend Ankhen! Dharmandra is so handsome in it and Mala Sinha’s role is awesome!

    For Alisa:
    Aamir films: Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke (plus this has Juhi and really cute kids). Less well known and probably not as good but silly and entertaining: Daulat Ki Jung (also with Juhi and very loosely based on McKenna’s Gold) and Afsana Pyar Ka (fueding families, Aamir and Neelam being cute, and happy ending)

    Hrithik: maybe Yadeein and Mein Prem Ki Deewani Hoon (they are both pretty bad but also ridiculously over the top, and Hrithik looks good in both).

    For Genevive’s Kids who seem to have the best taste in movies:
    I don’t know too many movies who can beat the silly fun action of Bang Bang, but here are some that might be fun: A Gentleman, Dhoom 2 (if they can deal with Aishwarya saying “like” in every third word), Dhisoom, Race 2, and maybe Bodyguard and Dabangg 2.

    • Yes! The Dhoom series is perfect for Genevieve’s kids! Plus, more Hrithik. And a good cop (she was avoiding Dabangg because she doesn’t want bad cops for the kids), Abhishek is the picture of honesty and intelligence and everything good in the Dhoom movies.

      If you have a high fever and watch Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, might you later think that you just hallucinated most of it? And would that be a good or bad thing? I wasn’t even sick when I watched it and I still thought I must have imagined that parrot.

      Love your boss suggestions! Especially Yes Boss, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, the ultimate in abusive boss behavior and then you get to punch him out at the end. Oh! Also Koyla!

      • Oh man you make a very good point about MPKDM. I should have added a warning that watching both Yadeein or MPKDH WILL cause you to think you are hallucinating. MPKDH has the parrot as you mentioned but I also think Hrithik and Kareena snorted a lot of cocaine before every scene. Oh and let’s not forget the weird fully clothed sex scene. And Yadeein has Chamakti Shaam Hai with the insane costumes and bad wigs and Jab Dil Mile with the weird computer animation and Hrithik and Kareena potentially having sex with a large feather.

        To my credit, I did reccomend the Aamir movies before reccomending the Hrithik ones.

        For Genevieve’s kids, good point about avoiding bad cops. Maybe substitute Dabangg 2 for Krissh. I couldn’t get past Hrithik’s mullet in that movie but maybe they won’t have as much of a problem with that.

        • And for some reason children seem to love Krrish. WHY??? I hate it so much.

          Hrithik and Kareena need to co-star again just so they can have a semi-normal sex scene for once. The closest they’ve come is that deleted scene from K3G. Mature Kareena and Hrithik, in a bed, with minimal clothing and soft lighting? I would watch that!

          • A metaphorical sex scene, them dancing alone after prom intercut with SRKajol having sexy times at home. I mean, I think it is pretty clear what is happening.

          • Because Shahrukh and Kajol, unlike all Bhansali characters, are aware of fire safety and light their ten million candles in the yard instead of the bedroom. As to why you need ten million candles before you can have sex, I just assume that is some Indian cultural thing. Probably in the Kama Sutra.

            Have you watched all the deleted scenes? This is a delightful little follow-up, there’s another deleted scene where the whole family goes shopping and Kajol is holding the black dress up against herself and Shahrukh laughs and says she looks like a “black buffalo”. So now here she is showing him up, proving she can wear the dress and look fabulous and make his eyes bug out.

          • I think I blocked out the Hrithik-Kareena parts of this scene because I love the Kajol-SRK parts so much. Kajol looks so pretty in the black dress and SRK looks so cute disheveled, post -work look.

          • I love the Kajol-SRK parts too! Especially after seeing her being so unaware and unaggressive in their early romance, I love coming back and seeing her after ten years of marriage completely in control while he is the fussy no fun guy.

  7. Thanks for the recommendations! Many new to me except for the Shah Rukh ones of course. 🙂 As I was reading these I thought of Tumhari Sulu also–terrible bosses at the husband’s job, variable but overall supportive bosses at Vidya’s job at the radio station.

    • Yes, Tumhari Sulu is a good one! The husband’s job has such a realistically horrible flavor it’s almost hard to watch.

  8. For boss stuff, what about Bahubali? The parts where Ramya Krishnan seizes power from the “boss” that is the skeezy king? I feel like fantasizing about striding around in awesome saris while taking over a kingdom might be a good outlet.

  11. Gabbar Singh from Sholay is the ultimate bad boss.
    Some movie bad bosses –
    Anu Kapoor (Editor) as Sridevi’s bad boss in Mr. India
    LunchBox – Between boss Irfan Khan and incompetent fresher Nawajuddin
    Nitya Menon toying with Nitin as lady boss in Gunde jari Gallantainde (Telugu) (Link below)
    Nagarjuna as woman-hater boss to all-ladies (Sonali Bendre & others) office in Manmadhudu and later positions change with Sonali becoming boss – This is a recommended movie for comedy/family, etc. This movie is on HotStar. BTW, Shiva is now available on Prime.

  12. Children & Movies update: Imagine a 10-year-old, soccer playing, Californian male child watching the scene in Singham where Ajay is able to arrest the criminal only by lying, and having the entire crew of policemen lie with him when they frame the criminal by putting alcohol into his car.

    “Sweetie, things are a lot different in India.”

    That child, being the way he is, will probably accept that. But thank goodness my deep thinking 7-year-old wasn’t there. The idea that doing an obvious legal (and moral?) wrong leads to a good? There would have been bedtime questions for months. Which doesn’t mean they are bad questions. Big ideas aren’t bad, just parentally exhausting. The 10-year-old liked the movie, the 4-year-old didn’t (too much dialogue).

    But what movie do the kids LOVE – Thugs of Hindustan. Yep, the movie everyone hates the kids adore. Flashy fighty songs and minimal plot with costumed characters that are easy to tell apart. (when he wasn’t in a uniform the 10-year-old had a hard time telling Ajay apart from mustached bad guys – when you don’t see them all the time, brown-skinned Indians look alike. The Native Amercians and Hispanic neighbors we interact with daily don’t look alike, but he has a hard time seeing the difference in Indians, who we don’t see daily. Perhaps watching more Indian movies will help?) But in Thugs of Hindustan, who are the bad guys? The white people. Why? They are taking over the country for money. Even the 4-year-old got that.

    I think we’ll try Dhoom 2 next. It was suggested and in my memory there is minimal dialogue, so the 4-year-old will hopefully like it. After that Tiger Zinda Hai, or perhaps Don 1 again since I didn’t watch it too closely the first time.

    • For perfectly clear morality, Raid is the way to go, but there is probably too much dialogue in that movie. Ajay again, but this time his philosophy is “rules must always be upheld by everyone equally at all times”. Very good for a 4 year old.

      So glad they liked ToH! And hopefully Dhoom 2 will work also, that plot confuses me a bit I have to admit. But I enjoy the movie even without understanding any of the plot, so I guess it isn’t important. Have I suggested Mr. India? It’s another great one for kids.

        • I was reading the wikipedia plotline of Mr. India, and for the most part the kids would love it, especially as it has kids in it. But they won’t like the child being killed by the toy bomb. I might have to check that out first.

          • It’s an easy fastforward if you know where it is, you can skip from before to after it is over and not lose the plot too much.
