Announcing Next Week….2009 Week!!!!

Yes, I have decided to count backwards instead of forwards. Partly because I hate going with the flow. Okay, LARGELY because I hate going with the flow (have I mentioned that I always bring my quilting to the knitting group and my knitting to the quilting group?). But also because 2009 had an amazing line up of films and 2011, not so much.

Luck By Chance (Hindi, Prime and youtube and googleplay)

A brilliant brilliant movie. the best possible film to get a sense of both how the Hindi film industry functions, and how it feels when you are inside of it. Also, requires a massive amount of knowledge to full appreciate. Luckily, I have provide annotations so you can get every single subtle reference and hidden meaning!

Dev.D (Hindi, Netflix)

Another brilliant movie! This is the movie that lets me forgive Anurag Kashyap a lot of his later filmic mistakes. The best interpretation of Devdas since Bimal Roy. And the best role Abhay Deol will ever have.

Billu (Hindi, Netflix)

You see what I mean about 2009 being irresistible? This is the only Shahrukh release of the year, and it is such a good one, and such an interesting one. I just reviewed it recently but I still want to repost the review.

Delhi-6 (Hindi, Netflix)

I can’t remember if I have reviewed this one yet or not. If I haven’t, I should have! It’s such an interesting film, amazing soundtrack, great performances, slightly flawed ending, but otherwise perfection.

Love Aaj Kal (Hindi, Prime and youtube and googleplay)

I think I did review this one as part of Imtiaz Ali day. Anyway, it’s a nice pleasant rom-com, and the first movie of 2009 on this list that isn’t an all time classic.

Kaminey (Hindi, Netflix)

And back to classics! This is the performance that makes me say Shahid Kapoor is the greatest actor of his generation. It’s just phenomenal, in every way, and the movie is as remarkable as his performance.

Dil Bole Hadippa (Hindi, youtube and googleplay and itunes)

And the other Shahid Kapoor movie of the year! Not quite as good, but awfully fun and awfully sexy.

Ritu (Malayalam, Available Nowhere on earth)

This is a groundbreaking important film of the Malayalam new wave. And naturally, it is not available to watch anywhere on earth. I had to buy a DVD from a very sketch internet source, I wish you luck in your own quests.

Magadheera (Telugu, einthusan)

SS Rajamouli’s practice run for Bahubali, fun and silly and modern, and then suddenly epic and historical. It’s all over youtube, but I can’t find it with subtitles there. So einthusan is your best bet.

Aarya 2 (Telugu, einthusan)

If you want to try to understand Allu Arjun, this is your best bet. He is a weird weird movie star and this is a weird weird movie. And yet, extremely entertaining and holding together in its own strange logic.

What’s Your Raashee? (Hindi, Netflix)

Fine, I will watch What’s Your Raashee? And then I will have seen all but two Ashutosh Gowariker movies, and people can stop nagging me about underselling PC because I haven’t seen it.

Wake Up Sid (Hindi, Netflix)

And another all time classic! Seriously, what is up with this year? Watch Konkona turn in another fabulous performance to end the year just like her performance that started the year, watch Ranbir be kind of okay onscreen, and enjoy the amazing soundtrack.

3 Idiots (Hindi, Netflix and Prime)

And finally, 3 Idiots. The movie that ruined everything. Not a coincidence that 2009 was such an amazing year. Once 3 Idiots broke the 300 crore barrier, suddenly that became the goal and all these small outstanding films that came before would never come again. You see why I want to count backwards instead of forwards?

    • Yes, but i think i only have to write 2 new reviews! And you all can just puck one or two to rewatch. The songs i posted are pretty representative so that should help you make up your mind

        • I am one of the few people in the DCIB community that like Priyanka and even I can’t bring myself to watch Pyaar Impossible (sorry Uday Chopra but there is no chance I can watch your face for that long) and What’s Your Rashee because it just looks bad.

However, I too enjoy the angry/sarcastic Margaret reviews a lot!

          • Won’t we all be disappointed if I watch it and it turns out to be a good movie?

          • Meh I’ll get over it. Your Pyaar Impossible review is actually tempting me to watch it. Oh oh…maybe I’ll watch it while having a drink. Beer goggles will make Uday’s face less frog like, right??!!

          • I’m telling you, it’s all worth it for realizing that Uday Chopra himself wrote a script in which a little girl meets him and immediately labels him “Froggy”. What kind of life must he have lead to bring him to that level of self-awareness?

  1. You write a really interesting review of Delhi 6 and in the comments we discussed how stupid Rakeysh Mehra thinks we all are that he has to pile on the super obvious symbolism and then we improved it by having Abhishek end up with Divya Dutta and Sonam run off and be a star by herself. That said, I do love this movie. I love so many movies on this list! I was just getting into Indian film and it was a great year. It’s going to rain here Sunday; I should just stay in and have 2009 day.

    • 2009 was amazing! I’ll be curious, as I keep going back in time, if my current “3 Idiots ruined everything” theory holds. 2010 was pretty decent, but then a lot of those movies were in production before 3 Idiots came out. I know 2008 had Om Shamti Om and Saawariya but I can’t remember what else it had.

Really though, one year with Delhi-6, Kaminey, Dev.D, and Luck By Chance? That’s crazy!
