It’s really not an important question, I am aware. But then, that’s what makes it so fun to discuss! Also, it’s so overcast here today that it legitimately does not look like the sub has come up. I need something dumb and frivolous to talk about!
There are some movies that make it a Major Plot Point that a couple had sex (Ishaaqzaade for instance), and there are other movies that make it a Major Plot Point that a couple didn’t have sex (Ram-Leela, for instance). But then there are all those other movies that exist somewhere in the middle.
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak:
Pro sex: They are young people who were living alone and sharing a one room hut and they are in love
Con sex: They are so super innocent I am honestly not sure they know how
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon:
Pro sex: This song
Con sex: Kareena explicitly tells her mother that they did not have sex
Kaho Na Pyar Hai
Pro sex: They are alone on a desert island overnight
Con sex: Hrithik is a good boy
Dilwale
Pro sex: It’s Shahrukh and Kajol flirting and young and healthy
Con sex: Shahrukh is a good boy and they are planning to be married
Hum Aapke Hain Koun
Pro sex: They are young and in love and alone a lot, plus this song
Con sex: Could you really have sex while your whole family is arriving any moment?
Vivah
Pro sex: They are going to be married, and also this song
Con sex: They are going to be married, and also good people
Hum Saath Saath Hain
Pro sex: This moment

Con sex: everything else about the Sonali-Salman relationship
Okay, I’m brain dead and out of movies to consider. Please add on in the comments! I know there are classic “did they or didn’t they?” moments I am forgetting, especially from the not-so-innocent 90s.
Interesting that four of these are Sooraj Barjatya movies. I just feel that, given the overall tone of his movies, it’s unthinkable for his leads to have pre-marital sex. Also, in Vivah, the last scene heavily suggests that that is their “first night” in a sexual way.
Do we think Devdas and Paro had sex? I have only seen Bhansali’s version and would argue that the “Morey Piya” song strongly implies this.

I was about to add the same question. I have read convincing arguments both ways and it really colours what happens from then on.

I have the opposite reaction to Sooraj Barjatya movies. I feel like he plays the “family” tone of the film to excuse things that, in any other film with any other characters, would obviously be interpreted as sexual, or in some other non-family-friendly way. His films are pretty explicit in a way, and yet we all say “oh well, it’s Sooraj Barjatya, I am sure he didn’t mean anything by it”.
I think Bhansali’s version of Dev and Paro had sex, but no one else’s did (and Dev.D is explicit about it and about how it plays into the lost love obsession and fantasy they both have).

I don’t know if I am happy or sad that you didn’t include Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke. I still contend they had some kind of sex. Even if it was a giant hallucination/in their dreams. That song is pretty damn explicit to me. Plus the movie is directed by Mahesh Bhatt!!!! Mahesh Bhatt movies = sex! But I might be in the minority here.
100% they had sex in Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. The mother conversation is purposely vague. Mom could be asking if she had sex or just weather she could be pregnant. And Kareena similarly could be saying no to either question.

See above discussion of my feeling that Sooraj Barjyatya gets away with murder because everyone thinks “It’s a Rajshri movie! Surely he didn’t really mean that”.
Doesn’t Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon also have that awesome moment when the clock stops in her parents’ house or something? Some magical sign of “your daughter is no longer a virgin, life is over”.

QSQT: Yes (why run off together if they weren’t going to have sex?)
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon: Hell yes. What do you think all that water stands for?
Kaho Na Pyar Hai: Only Hrithik having sex with himself and a mirror
Hum Aapke Hain Koun: No, but Salman got to second base
Dilwale, Vivah, HSSN: 🤷 (haven’t seen them)

QSQT: Because of True Love! Which is pure and does not require anything beyond soulful gazing
MPKDH: Yeah, this one really seems hard to argue the other side. Kareena lied to her mother is the simplest answer
KNPH: You are so mean! Also, I kind of like the sex theory, becuase it explains why Anushka was so obsessed with marrying someone who looked exactly like Dead Hrithik
HAHK: This seems reasonable. Enough to make it weird for her to marry his brother, but not impossible
You really should watch HSSH someday, picture HAHK but less surreal and more just odd.

Since you’ve included so many other Barjatya films, I’m surprised you didn’t include MPK. What about that Tere Rang Main song? I know it ends with him explicitly stepping back from his desire, but according to you, that’s just Barjatya code for saying it did happen. 🙂

The only movie I’ve seen from this list is Dilwale, but I think it’s a strong possibility. Janam Janam anyone?
But on a similar note, I’ve seen that video from MPKDH, even if I haven’t seen the whole movie, I know they did stuff. I just know it.

But she told her mother she didn’t do anything!!!!!!! Surely she wouldn’t have lied….

I assumed they had sex in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. And I did not assume that in any of the other movies (that I’ve seen). But now that I think of it, would you really wait over 10 years for your lover, if you didn’t have sex? So now I think they must have had sex in Dilwale too.

I will go with your Dilwale theory. Gerua as a metaphor makes a lot of sense.
