Most Powerful Songs of 2009, of Any Genre, Ranked

I already did kind of a lead up post to this, the general emotional songs that don’t fit any standard genre (sad song, love song, etc.). Now I am going to just go ahead and throw everything in a big heap, everything that is emotional whether it is love song, sad song, religious song, what have you. It was a really really good year. Also, save this post for the next time you have a sinus infection, it’s great for clearing your tear ducts right out.

“Jaane Nahin Denge Tujhe” from 3 Idiots. I dare you to watch the part where Madhavan comforts Sharman’s mother and not tear up.

“O Rahi Re” from Luck By Chance. The last song works perfectly as a small film all on its own, you don’t need any context beyond what you see there. But this one really only works if you have seen the rest of the film. I still think it is the second best film song of the year, but it makes for an interesting contrast.

“Mere Sang” from New York. Another one that works as a small film. The opening with John being released from jail gives you all you need to know. And Kat is just glowing in this, something about moments when she gets to care for others onscreen makes her come alive.

“Arziyan” from Delhi 6. This is kind of an odd mixed up music video of all the bits of the movie, but it works. It’s a hymn but the film itself is a hymn to humanity, so whether your are playing in a Masjid or in your courtyard or simply looking at other people, it still works.

“Shukran Allah” from Kurbaan. Terrible movie, but this song is so lovely, both to listen to and to watch. All the feels of falling in love.

Okay, which one of these makes you cry the most? And why? Or do you not care for any of them?

    • I have to confess, I don’t like Emotional Attachyar. I know I should, I know everyone else in the world loves it so I must be missing something, but it just does nothing for me.

      • I wish T-Series would update the videos for music since they are something like 480p in quality. Funny, considering Shemaroo and Saragama are busy updating and HD rendering old songs to a better quality, though it is a journey to find them since they are all buried in the algorithm

        • Now that they are the most subscribed channel on youtube, I’m thinking they won’t bother to do anything. Which is fine with me, when they update videos all my old posts stop working.

  1. My favourite songs from 2009 is Maahi. I don’t like only one thing in this song – that it’s from Kangana’s movie, all the rest I love.

  2. I was writing a comment but clicked something wrong and now I don’t know if it has been sent, or cancelled. Can you see if it’s in the spam?

  3. Looking at the 2009 movies list, so many good songs. Back when melody and lyrics both were compelling. Going chronologically:
Khudaya Khair (Billu) – the lyrics have a fairytale quality, plus the picturization of Lara’s dream and their real life is so good
Hafiz Khuda/ Kuch Is Tarah (8×10 Tasveer) – two songs set to the same tune, unique
Mere Sang/ Tune Jo Na Kahaan (New York) – slight preference for Tune.. but both good
Dooriyan (Love Aaj Kal) – maybe overrated but for a reason
    Pehli Baar (Kaminey)
Iktara (Wake Up Sid) – classic
Tera Hone Laga Hoon, Tu Jane Naa (APKGK)
Dil Ibadat (Tum Mile) – if I’ve to pick one song, this would be it. This was the time when Emraan Hashmi films meant good songs
    Ittefaq (Paa) – close second

Looks like all would qualify as pining for love songs but no tearjerkers.

    • For me, “Tum Mile” is all about the title song. Agree about the “Emraan means good music” rule. It’s still kind of true but not as much as it used to be.
