Upcoming Movie Reviews: For January, a Look Back at the Best Films of 2019

Some of these I haven’t reviewed before, a lot are reruns, but it should be fun! And it will fill in the next few weeks as I travel and recover from the holidays and so on. Oh, and also, ALL of these films look good! So if you are looking for movie ideas for the next few weeks, check out this list of recommendations!

Friday 1/3: Dream Girl (Hindi, einthusan)

Yet another Ayushmann middle-class average hero gentle comedy. But a pleasant one! And according to my commentators, one that is well worth watching and reviewing.

Sunday 1/5: Gully Boy (Hindi, Prime)

Best movie of 2019? Possibly! Best soundtrack of 2019? Definitely!

Wednesday 1/8: Virus (Malayalam, Prime)

Everyone says it is good, I haven’t seen it because it is a realistic depiction of an epidemic spreading. But I am going to force myself! For the new year!

Thursday 1/9: Super Deluxe (Tamil, Netflix)

After thinking about it, I didn’t like it. But then, a lot of other people really did like it. A quandary! Watch it, and decide for yourself.

Friday 1/10: Photograph (Hindi, Netflix)

Another one I haven’t seen, but heard good things. And it just hit Netflix, so I am curious!

Sunday 1/12: Badla (Hindi, Netflix)

A really really solid little mystery thriller. Good performances from a small cast, interesting British visuals, just all around good if you like that kind of thing.

Wednesday 1/15: Allu Ramendran (Malayalam, einthusan)

Kunchacko Boban? Light village comedy? I’m in! I assume it is good, don’t tell me otherwise and spoil it!

Thursday 1/16: Sarvam Thaala Mayam (Tamil, Netflix)

Uneven resolution, but the songs are amazing, and 80% of the film is really interesting and deep about art and cast and culture and stuff.

Friday 1/17: Junglee (Hindi, Hotstar and einthusan)

This is a stupid stupid movie. But boy, Vidyut Jammwal has abs you could grate cheese with!

Sunday 1/19: Notebook (Hindi, Prime)

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!! It is sweet, it is romantic, it has cute kids and a happy ending and great songs, you are WASTING YOUR LIFE if you have not yet watched it.

Wednesday 1/22: Android Kunjappan (Malayalam, Prime)

Normally I would be very nervous of a “Android lives in small village and makes people smile” movie, but it stars Soubin Shahir! So I have hope.

Thursday 1/23: Saaho (Telugu, Netflix)

It’s Saaho! Shraddha is useless, Prabhas takes his shirt off, the action sequences are intense.

Friday 1/24: Laal Kaptan (Hindi, Prime)

A weird Saif movie! The best kind of movie. And it looks like it is the movie Thugs of Hindostan wanted to be? Weird and complex and period.

Sunday 1/26: Chhichore (Hindi, Hotstar and Einthusan)

A cuter movie than it seems! With an interesting message about how it is okay to not always be perfect and the best.

Wednesday 1/29: Kumbalangi Nights (Malayalam, Prime)

I liked it on my first watch, didn’t love it. If I have time, I may rewatch it and see if I like it better. Anyway, it is definitely one that all of you should watch! It’s really pretty, and ultimately uplifting (after some super dark bits).

Thursday 1/30: Bigil (Telugu, Prime)

Kind of a silly movie, but there is always space for silliness! The moment when our hero literally picks up his father’s fallen sword is a favorite of mine.

Friday 1/31: Mard Ki Dard Nahi Hota (Hindi, Netflix)

Another one where I am trusting you all not to have lead me astray. It’s on Netflix, and you said it was good, so I am hoping I will like it! Certainly the trailer is a kick.

  1. I just finished watching Helen and omg I really, really want you to review it. It’s the kind of film that I’ll be thinking about for a long time. Anna Ben has got a great career ahead of her and I’m thinking yet again that the young female stars in the south are so much better, more lively, more interesting than the new crop of Hindi female stars.

    • Just looked it up, and it looks scary! Not saying I will never watch it, but I am happy with my decision to go with the light village movie instead for this month.

      • I don’t know how to sell Helen to you. Best I can come up is this is what you get when Malayalam cinema attempts survival flick. It’s small and quite sweet. And Anna Ben has the kind of smile that lights up the entire screen. So don’t get put off by its survival flick tag. It’s not at all gory

        • Thanks, good to know! It does sound a bit stressy though, so I will put it off until February when I am less “post-Christmas blues” feeling. But I will try to keep it on my mental list! Keep reminding me!

          • What I love about it is that it’s a survival film but the entire first half is just about Helen and her life and her relationships with her father, boyfriend and coworkers and it all pays off big in the second half. Everything they set up comes into play and contributes to either threaten her or support her survival. Yes, it’s stressy in the second half and I was literally shouting at my TV at points but not to the point where it will give you PTSD or anything like that.

          • Yes! This is what is so great about Malayalam films! The first half is always just finding stuff out about people’s lives, and then the “plot” starts in the second half. In the poorly made ones, the two halves feel completely disconnected, but in the well-made ones (like this one) they inform each other.
