Well, not “millennial”, Design for Living was almost 100 years ago, and there is the whole complicated Duchess of Devonshire-Lady Elizabeth Foster-Duke of Devonshire thing. But I guess the word “throuple” is new, so that’s something my generation has contributed to relationships.
Let me throw some relationships out there at you! And yes, I will be using a loose definition of “throuple” to include any group of three people that functions as a combined partnership.

IDK I think SOTY2 needs to be a couple, without Tiger. So it will be Dostana and AAA.

None of the others? Just Dostana and AAA?

I support all of them except Ranbir’s triangulation, but those are the best ones.

I really enjoyed the chemistry and supportiveness in Bangalore days. And I’m so glad that unlike the 3bros formula of dch znmd e.t.c, this threeple included a female. And not a token female either, her story formed the heart and soul of the film. You watch BD and you wish you you could be the 4th cousin in their crew!

Yes! And the way they interacted wasn’t all super aware of the gender divide. They treated her like one of the group.

Also interesting that they are cousins, not friends/ colleagues/ schoolmates, and not siblings. Plus they are cousins that grew up in different households, not joint family cousins. Thus there’s no possibility of a love triangle between them, yet there is the closeness of family balanced with the non judgemental supportiveness of close friends.

Yes! And also without the strict format of the brother-sister relationship. There is no social structure that is forcing them to be together, just the loose family ties that brings closeness. We see that right away in the wedding sequence, Nazriya wants her cousins there and they want to be there for her, but in terms of the greater spectacle of the wedding, they have no formal role.

IDK if it qualifies, but Saif-Preity-Shah in KHNH came to my mind. For the short time they had together, they functioned well as a throuple (new word for me), though I have many problems with Aman in the movie. Dostana and AAA are good too.

Oh, I like Kal Ho Na Ho! They were a very good throuple, one of the few were I felt like all three of them had equal interactions. Saif and Shahrukh, Preity and Saif, Preity and Shahrukh, all of them liked each other and could have happily lived together. Kind of did in a way, since Saif and Preity’s marriage always had the ghost of Shahrukh haunting it.

Yes that’s exactly what I thought, they all had one-to-one relationships.

Sid/Varun/Alia in SOTY1 are my ultimate Bollywood throuple, ultimate any industry throuple, so much so that I wrote insanely long, insanely explicit fanfiction for them months ago, which I am linking because I have no shame. https://archiveofourown.org/works/15943502 Be warned: when I say explicit, I mean EXPLICIT.
SOTY2 would have been more enjoyable if they were a throuple. This was obvious from the trailer. I’ve been meaning to watch Dostana for a long time but haven’t gotten around to it. I also second the KHNH comment and would like to contribute SRK/Kajol/Rani in KKHH.

Ooo, SRK/Kajol/Rani is a good pick. The closest to a true “throuple”, all of them loved each other and balanced needs, and if you include ghosts, Rani totally hung around as part of SRK-Kajol’s thing. Heck, now I want to rewrite it as a true throuple happy ending. Maybe Rani saw what was happening in college and spoke up, they were a happy college throuple, hit graduation and Kajol disappeared because she saw their thing wouldn’t work in the real world, Rani and SRK got married but there was always this gap in their lives, then little Anjali finds college photos and talks to Farida and learns about Kajol and how she was named for her but, for mysterious reasons, she isn’t part of their lives any more. Anjali goes to camp, tricks her parents into coming, Kajol and Shahrukh and Rani find all the old feelings coming up again and are super super happy. But then Salman shows up and they are forced back into the man-woman two person couple mold and are miserable. Wedding, surprise confrontation, all plays out as before, but with Rani. And it ends with the three of them and Little Anjalia nd Farida happily forming a family.
