Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Reorganize My Space!

Happy Saturday! Which still has meaning for me, because I am actually working 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. But today I have the whoooooooooooooole day and I am going to try to organize my space.

Here’s my vision, for the small back bedroom of my parents where I am currently living. First, I make the bed every morning turning it into more of a “sofa” than a bed by putting pillows up on the long side against the wall. Then, I bring in the extra little TV and put it in front of the bed, thereby creating a “living room”.

We get the desk out of the closet and put it along the wall, I put my phone and laptop and stuff from work over there, “office”.

I hang my coat on the hook by the door and put my shoes underneath, “front hall”. And we empty the linens out of the chest and put my clothes in, “closet”. Thereby leaving the real closets to perform their current task “storage area for my parents’ stuff”.

And poof! I have a 3 and a half room living space! Office, living room, bedroom, and front hall with a closet!

So, that’s one thing to talk about, what imaginative uses are you all putting in place for your space?

My bedroom space is only slightly smaller than Konkona’s apartment, so I guess I am doing fine!

Other thing to talk about, it’s Rani’s birthday!!!!! Yaaaaaaaay!!!! Did not think that through when I scheduled Aiyyaa for yesterday, but it was a nice coincidence. Aiyyaa may be my favorite Rani performance, what’s yours?

And finally, nice stories to tell of good things that happened in your life which will make us all feel hopeful, this is the space. For example, yesterday my parents went for a long walk along the lakefront and my father, as I asked him, did NOT go up and talk to strangers like he usually does. But he did wave really really big every time he saw someone. The first three people kind of avoided eye contact, but then he finally got someone who waved really big back at him. So that’s nice!

Also, my parents’ apartment has windows that look out on a high traffic alley. We totally need to put signs up in them, don’t we? I’m thinking something like “HI!” or “Hang in There!” or “We’re All in This Together!” Heck, we’ve got enough windows, we could do all three!

  1. On a family bike ride during one of our home school excursions we found a circular track with easy “jumps”. The kids love it so much they have made us go back everyday. And they always want videos, but after a while, it is like what do you do with all the videos? So my 11-year-old is teaching himself to edit the videos into little Youtube clips. He gets very excited each time there is a new view. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDBXGCk_LtQ

    • That is a GREAT video!!!! Especially for today, when it has a sudden weird temperature drop in Chicago and is around freezing. I encourage everyone else to watch it too!

  2. Our neighborhood is doing things like putting up signs in windows with positive messages and our kids are writing messages w sidewalk chalk and also (I love this one) drawing pics of book scenes and then other neighborhood kids on their walks guess the story with chalk. Lots of chalk happening.

Today I attempted to do a Netflix Party group watch with some pals of (of course since it was an intro for one family) HNY but NP didn’t work! It drove me batty. On the end we all synchronized our start time and texted. That was fun. Anyone have success so far with Netflix Party? Could be great for our group.

I just went big and ordered a trampoline for the backyard AND a tree swing for the front. And chalk of course. And twister.

    • Oh, I like the chalk idea! It’s still chilly here, but is supposed to warm up over the next few days, that might be fun. And I definitely want to make signs for our windows.

The commenting on a post system didn’t work too bad for us on Friday, and I like the idea that no special different technology is needed since it is just regular old DCIB. But I am tempted to try Netflix Party just with friends. I already have a person that I am desperate to get to watch JHMS and this might be my chance.

      • And fire is so healing! I am jealous of the houses on our street who have fire places.
