Pride Day: Indian Movies That You Most Want Remade as Queer Love Stories

I was going to say “that could be queer love stories”, but really that is all of them. Out of all the possible wonderful queer films, which do you most want?

Queer DDLJ

That’s what we kind of got with Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan, but without the first half, and the first half is the magic. Give me my inexperienced young person meeting an experienced young person on a long trip and slowly falling in love but not being sure if they feel the same way. And then give me THE DRAMA of the experienced young person suddenly showing up and surprising the inexperienced young person after they thought it was too late and they had to marry someone they didn’t love. And finally, the sweet family story of each relative, one by one, coming to not just accept but even encourage and celebrate their love.

Don’t care if it is girl-girl or boy-boy, works either way. But Anupam Kher still has to play the experienced young person’s father.

Queer Judwaa

Identical twins separated at birth, one raised cocky and confident on the street, the other shy and refined and a famous musician. They grow up and end up in the same city, the street twin finds a wealthy love interest who is just as confident and amoral as he is, and the musician twin finds a love interest whose mother throws them together until even he notices her pursuit. Now, picture all this same sex! Happy confident street kid and happy confident rich person, versus shy musician who has never felt these things before and the inexperienced young person being thrown at him by their parent! And then the couples mix and match to just add another to it all.

I have a slight preference for boy-boy versus girl-girl in this case, but I could be happy either way.

Queer Parineeta

Definitely want girl-girl for this. Two girls grow up as best friends, super close, running in and out of each other’s houses, even though one is rich and one is poor. The poor one starts going around with an older man, the other one is jealous, they have a fight and in the middle of it accidentally are “married”. And then get excited at the idea of being married and have sex and are happy. Only then the rich one is sent out of town by her father and thrown together with an appropriate rich boy. She returns home and is told that her best friend next door married the older man to get money to save her family. She is heartbroken and agrees to marry the rich boy after all. Only on her wedding day, the poor girl returns dressed as a married woman. The rich girl is brokenhearted and bitter, until she learns the poor girl considers herself “married” to the rich girl! That’s why she dresses like that and everything! Both woman run out of their houses and are reunited, HAPPINESS.

  1. These are some great ideas! Like I’ve only watched DDLJ but there are actually a lot of bollywood movies that can be remade into queer movies. Hope it happens soon or at least before I die lol. Stay happy and stay safe:)

  2. I saw something on Twitter a while back that said “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania where everything is the same except Humpty is a girl” and I was like “hmm…”

  3. I’d love a very classic love triangle but all same sex. Or a gay 70s classic with the homeroticism made explicit. Imagine what Hera Pheri would be like if they were an actual couple (barely any different).

    • Devdas with Lesbians is an idea we have been playing around with for years.

        • Doesn’t it work well????? Only thing is, I would want a happy ending, either Dev sneaks Paro out of her house after years of marriage, and they go off and are happy forever. Or Paro is Bi and is okay in her marriage, and Dev eventually learns to appreciate the older elegant experienced Chandra from the city and they set up a household together.
