Woo-hoo! Courtney’s birthday, party time! And Humpty time! 2pm Chicago time this week (an hour earlier than usual), and a very good movie. I’ll start the comments off at 2pm and you all can keep commenting along.
Humpty Sharma! So much better than the title implies. If you’ve already seen it, you probably already love it. If you haven’t seen it, prepare to love it.
And PLAY!!!!

I don’t object to this hero intro, but it’s not my favorite. he doesn’t have to be a saint, but does it have to be the first thing we see?

As underwhelming as this song is, I love these shots. Such a great movie intro. Very real and lived in.

And right away we get that both our hero and heroine are less-than-perfect, but love their friends and families and don’t really hurt anyone.

Ashutosh Rana: Sexier in this movie than Varun? Yes or no?
LikeLike
Varun is a sweet young boy who reminds me of squirrels and other small mammals. Ashutosh is definitely sexier.

Oh good, it’s not just me.

As the young person here, I have to stick with Varun as the one who I like more. But he’s definitely way sweeter in this movie than sexy. Wouldn’t use that word for Humpty.

I HATE SUBTITLE PEOPLE!!!! Why is DDLJ turned into Titanic? Or Laila Majnu always made Romeo-Juliet?

I love Alia’s accent, especially her mouth movement in this movie. It is not easy and she does such a good job.

I love that the mom corrected the son. I don’t often see that in Hindi films.

Agreed! Also, she defends Alia and says that she hated her wedding outfit that was picked by someone else.

When I showed this movie to my friends, they basically had 3 points by the end. Varun is Indian Zac Efron type, Alia is a bada**, and they desperately wanted a sequel about Alia’s sister.
LikeLike
YES! My headcanon is clear, the sister marries the fiancee and he gently brings her out of her shell with his kindness and decency. Definitely a scene where he stands up to the gossipy women of the Indian American Association in defense of her and she starts to fall in love.

Good for Swati standing up to her mother and asserting that she married a person because it was her choice and he ended up being a jerk and not accusing god for it.

I don’t know, I think it was this English poem that made me fall in love with Varun.

Analytical fun experiment: What if this is DDLJ with reversed genders? Alia is the flirty confident spoiled one, Varun is the shyer less confident “good” one?
LikeLike
Varun flirts too, especially in a couple scenes. But I would LOVE this, especially if it was really reversed and Varun was the one arranged and Alia followed him home to convince his family why they should get married.

Love Varun’s dialogue to DDLJ’s Anupam Kher’s reaction to SRK failing. Rich fathers send their son who failed to europe, my father will kick me in the a$$ and put me to work.

Love this movie’s sense of place. It’s not hitting you over the head with “DELHI” but it is also different from a movie sent somewhere else.

He has to look cool! He’s about to hit on a girl. Sweatshirt is believable, it can be chilly in Delhi.

This is minor, but I wish this song were more brightly lit. It mostly feels like fun college party in a gym, but the lights and stuff turn it into a disco club song. It would be more in tune with the movie at this point to have it feel more kind of childish and youthful and innocent, like a KKHH song.
LikeLike
Some of the big college parties in the gym I went to were dark and had disco lights like that. This also happened to come out when I was in college, even if I didn’t see it at the time. Maybe it’s the vibe.

40 rupees to a dollar is more or less correct and easy to calculate. So, $10,000. Not totally impossible if your family is indulgent, but totally reasonable for her Dad to say “no”.
