Woo-hoo! Courtney’s birthday, party time! And Humpty time! 2pm Chicago time this week (an hour earlier than usual), and a very good movie. I’ll start the comments off at 2pm and you all can keep commenting along.
Humpty Sharma! So much better than the title implies. If you’ve already seen it, you probably already love it. If you haven’t seen it, prepare to love it.
Not a fan of this pattern on Alia, or anyone. Too many colors.

We disagree. I will take this shirt, and you can have any other outfit of your choice!

It looks very comfortable, I’ll give her that. I love a lot of her traditional outfits later in the movie.

I am loving how varied everyone’s reactions are to so many little things in this movie, and yet, we all love it sooo much!!!

It can have terrible outfits, decent music, but Varun and Alia’s love is so strong that it’s worth it.

YES!!! It’s one of the only movies where I am smiling from beginning to end.

This is where Alia loses me. Just get the fake! Who would know in Ambala? And it’s the same skirt. And Manish won’t even notice he lost the money.

This definitely feels like one of those “stumbled into love” movies. They’re so sweet.

I also like Varun’s shirt here. But, how is he going to wait on the customers when he is married and Alia won’t let him flirt any more?

Another thing that bothers me. How can Alia talk so normally when her face mask is hardening so much? I can never move my face.
Love Varun’s laugh though.

Varun – your flirt game with anyone besides Alia is soo bad!

Margaret, I think I might want this pink shirt. I also just love Alia’s hair here. Every time I try to do it, it just looks weird.

Love how seriously Varun takes all this, he is a suuuuuuuch a good guy. And Alia’s simple “You’re safe” is such a brilliant understanding line, that a girl has to judge in a second who is “safe” and who is “not safe” every time she meets some one.

We are all translating this to DDLJ, right? So this is the Zara Jhoom Loom Me moment, for instance.

I can’t type fast enough but I compare just about every scene to DDLJ.

When Varun gets all vulnerable it is both so sweet and heartwarming to see, the red moist eyes sell it well

Varun is the absolute SWEETEST in this scene, and this whole movie. Love how much he cares for her.

And how much he “sees” her. He has been thinking about her and paying attention to her life and wants to understand what is going on with her.

He, along with others, but especially in this scene is really setting the bar high for my expectations of men’s behaviour at parties. Just so vulnerable its loveable!

This conversation is the most close to identical with DDLJ, which is surely on purpose, because the one thing that hasn’t changed is that a daughter has to agree to a marriage to please her father.

It is unusual for an Uncle to give a visiting niece such freedom right? Is it because the uncle is an alcoholic?
LikeLike
HA! Uncle seem more like a light weight than an alcoholic.

I think this is just an awesome family. Looks like Dad gave her a lot of freedom too, so it’s what she expects and uncle will go along with it. Oh, and we also got the bit about Aunt being out of town, so maybe she is taking advantage of Uncle working and doing stuff and no one home to watch her.

Gee, what DDLJ scene is this referring to?

This is what elevates HSKD over DDLJ for me. The acknowledgement that this “prank” is not okay, and Alia’s reaction is completely justified to seemingly being taken advantage of. Plus, the lipstick on Varun’s chest and his deep voice just does something to me.

I really wonder how much of this movie was improvisation and natural chemistry between the actors and how much was Shashank Kaitan’s direction. Every single Varun-Alia moment is just so on point and memorable.

The script was good enough that Karan just picked it out of a stack to produce it, so there must have been something there to begin with. But yeah, so much of it rests on their chemistry and timing together.

Love that Alia isn’t as selfish and materialistic as she seemed at the beginning of the movie. That seems to be why Varun fell in love with her, from the look on his face.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yes! I think it is also a moment of her being truly mature, he sees her as a woman and a potential wife all of a sudden, instead of just a cute girl to flirt with. And he’s gonna turn the tables and make her feel the same about him in a moment.

And here is the DDLJ train station moment! Love isn’t about the big declarations, it’s about saying the simple thing and then just walking away and letting her deal with it. Or, do I mean manhood? He’s not afraid to put it completely on the line and wait to see what she decides.
