Woo-hoo! Courtney’s birthday, party time! And Humpty time! 2pm Chicago time this week (an hour earlier than usual), and a very good movie. I’ll start the comments off at 2pm and you all can keep commenting along.
Humpty Sharma! So much better than the title implies. If you’ve already seen it, you probably already love it. If you haven’t seen it, prepare to love it.
I love Varun in the yellow kurta.

Not a fan of this dialogue in the closet, but I love cuddly, affectionate drunk Alia. And her calling him Rakesh instead of Humpty.

I love that Alia is totally initiating sex with Varun.

In my sequel, we learn that Fiance injured a friend while drunk in college, and that’s why he is all about control and perfection and stuff. And why he is willing to marry troubled big sister, partly to do good things and atone, and partly because he feels like they both need a second chance. She finds this out in a late night conversation and holds him while he cries, and then they make love.

All these small scenes between Alia and Varun really sell their relationship. Him pulling her on top of him just now. All the cheek kisses between the window later on. So adorable and casual.

I KNOW!!!! So flirty. So natural. So cute.

And Fiance is way WAY taller than Ashutosh! And yet, he still feels the biggest person on screen.

Little bit of sweet self-hatred here, with Ashutosh not wanting someone just like himself for his daughter, but someone better than him.

He may be a terrible cook, but he is relaxed and not angry or stressy in a crisis, which is far more important for a husband I think.

Yeah, but humpty, you are just as handsy with your gay friend. Should we point that out to him?

It is cute, and real, how Facebook is important in their lives. Who friend requests who, and what pictures are posted…

This is the one thing I have against this movie. I can totally get behind the idea of Poplu being gay, but I’m not a fan of using it at a plot device and this kind coercion type antic for comedy purposes.

Yeah, that kinda sours the Daignad song for me a bit too. Couldn’t they have chosen some other way???

Maybe Alia is a little young to get married in this, if she has such outbursts when he doesn’t answer the phone? Wouldn’t be surprised if my students acted like this with guys.

Maybe we can just have them get engaged at the end of this movie. Engaged, and Alia goes to school in Delhi and they date for a few more years.

I hate this plot device with Poplu and the fiance but I do appreciate Dostana soundtrack in the background.

THIS! This is what Varun should go to Ashtoush with. “I don’t want perfect, I just want you.” How he feels about Alia, and how Alia feels about him.

In the making of this song, Alia’s kurta’s back was ruined in some way I can’t remember and she had to dance only from the front, hence the staging and choreography

As soon as I read this, I noticed her mom walked in front of her. That’s so smart, and I didn’t even know that about this song!

Daingad is probably my least favorite song from the soundtrack, but I love Alia’s outfit and her hair. Plus, I can totally get why all of you find Ashtoush sexy. This song really sells it.

I love Daingad but I think it is because I love that it is a dialogue-song, which I think really doesn’t do it justice in subtitles.

They will make it work. They will love and fight and grow together and eventually turn into SRK and Kajol from the second half of KKKG.

Because this is a movie, that is what will happen. But SRK was much more of an adult in KKKG. Kajol is a permanent child.

Love that “izzat” is not part of the conversation at all. It’s about how to guarantee Alia’s happiness, not how to guarantee she never shames the family.

YES!!! Also, Angad is a great guy, but Alia loves Varun and will be happy with him.

This is totally regressive and wrong and blah blah and I LOVE IT! My justification is, doesn’t matter if Angad acted more safely and correctly, he wasn’t making Alia feel safe and happy.

I agree. Also, I love that Alia continues to order more beer (probably not safe in real life) but here, she is angry, she wants a beer, and then she stands up for herself if her fiance won’t.

If this doesn’t solidify Varun and Alia’s love, I don’t know what will. It’s what Alia needs, even if it’s not moral. He’s not the best person objectively, but he did all of this to protect her. Of course, doesn’t make it okay, but still goes into being the best person FOR Alia.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes! Exactly! It’s not about actually doing the safe thing, it’s about doing the thing that makes Alia feel safe, and Varun will make it happen. Heck, he did all that stuff to get her a designer outfit, instead of saying “this is stupid and nonsensical” like Angad probably would have.

There’s also a lot of great character growth. I’m stuck on when Varun said “I can be a better person for her, but I can’t change myself.” I think that’s the message of the movie. Alia is still impulsive, Varun is still rash, they don’t necessarily “grow up” by the end of the movie. But they get a little smarter, a little less self-absorbed. Ashtoush too.
