Thank you Kirre! For telling me this was available and making me watch it. And now I have watched it, and it is quite fun.
Masaba Gupta is a brilliant prodigy fashion designer, started winning her first awards and getting noticed at 19, currently is a regular high fashion designer, does a lot of the more out there stuff Sonam wears for instance (she and Sonam are also good friends). She is also the daughter of actress Neena Gupta by way of a brief relationship with an African-Heritage famous Cricket player, so she was born into the biggest scandal of her life. And now she is a young successful woman in India who doesn’t fit with the way young women in India are “supposed” to be (her looks, her single mother, her very independent powerful career position). It’s hard not being what you are “supposed” to be, you have to kind of make things up as you go instead of following a pattern.
This show looks fun, lots of cameos of people playing themselves, but also lots of actual actors playing roles. Like, I recognize most of Masaba’s assistant team from other small roles in other stuff. And it seems like there is a storyline of Neena’s boyfriend leaving her maybe? Which isn’t something that is a real story, that is, if part of it is the media attention, then there was no media attention on a Neena break up. So it’s not just a story the public didn’t know being recreated, it’s totally completely made up.
Thank goodness! Reality shows make me uncomfortable, so nosey and disrespectful of privacy. This is just a fiction show that has the same names and jobs as the people have in real life.
I also got excited for a moment thinking about how this show will let the audience sympathize with young working women and single mothers and stuff and break them out of their comfort zone. And then I remembered it was on Netflix, so the audience is already the rich professional women who have this right in their comfort zone.
Oh well, at least it might break the non-Indian audience out of their prejudices, teach them about the celebrity culture and stuff. But the trailer only dropped on Netflix India, so probably not, probably it’s just going to stay in the Indian and diaspora audience.
Oh well, we will all like it, so that’s something!
HA!
And coming at a very timely point in my life! Thanks Margaret and Kirre! (and of course, Netflix and Masaba!)

Yes! This is one of the shows where I think “they made it just for me, wealthy global young woman and my disposable income, and I don’t care! I will take the gift and be happy!”

I don’t know if I can deal with people performing a fanfic version of their own life, but it looks fun aside from that.

It’s kind of weird, isn’t it? It’s a great show if we pretend it is totally fiction, a young successful talented fashion designer struggling to keep up the pace, with an eccentric movie star mother, a bunch of vapid celebrity clients, and various romantical problems. But knowing that the mother and daughter are real life mother and daughter and playing a fictionalized version of themselves is just ODD. I wonder if the second season will have Masaba’s problems multiply when Netflix approaches her about creating a fictionalized version of her life for a TV show, and then we will see her and Neena filming the show within the show that is the actual show we are watching and our brains will all explode?

I would watch that metashow.
It’s very, very odd, and the fact that normal reality TV is actually this really just makes it odder and harder to accept. Why can’t they just pretend it’s fiction and name them Mosobo and Neelam Gaptu?

Yes, I also have a problem with this! What’s the point of doing a half true half fanfic show?
