Woo-hoo! Such a happy movie for a happy day! Well, for a stressy day that will become happy because of the movie (I don’t know about you, but the last couple weeks before daylight savings ends when I wake up before the sun makes me NUTTY).

I am so happy about this! We need more happy HAPPY movies in the world, and this is SUCH a happy movie. It’s on Amazon Prime, and youtube, and googleplay. And probably einthusan.

Anyway, at 3pm Chicago time today, I will put up a “PLAY!” comment and we all start at the same time. And then we just keep commenting along right here.

  6. I was just watching an episode of Star Trek where Evil Kirk wore eye liner. So I guess that trope goes back at least as far as the 60s. But WHY? Why is eyeliner evil????

        • Haven’t seen it, but it’s also used to indicate the character is unconventional, so it could be that. Besides the cultural norms in India, where sometimes it indicates an ethnic/traditional sensibility.

          • In all seriousness, the kohl in Raees is a large part of indicating that Shahrukh is from the Muslim underclasses. It’s part of his look, along with Pathani suits and a beard, in his most Muslim role to date.

          • Oh, so it was that last thing? It’s hard because I know it often indicates some kind of ethnic/class thing but I don’t know WHAT because it’s not seen as a gender thing so it hasn’t been addressed in any of the academic stuff I’ve read about India.

          • I did a lot of research when Shahrukh’s first Raees look came out. It’s a technique that goes back to Mohammed’s time that black stuff in your eyes can help ward off infection and just generally be good for you. So it’s something that some communities put on during Ramadan in memory. The idea of homemade herbal kohl being good for your eyes lives on in South Asia in a whole variety of traditions and communities. For Raees in particular, he used it as it would have been used by the lower class Muslim community he is representing, both showing his Muslim roots, and the sort of lower class community where traditional ayurvedic health practices would be followed over “modern medicine”.

  28. Ugh I really wish they’d let Hrithik be more gray for this, I know they probably didn’t want to, but to have him be a contemporary of GT’s dad would lend that Big Look between the mom and Hrithik a little more oomph.
