Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Do a Costco Run!

Happy Saturday! I’m at my parents’ today, planning to do a Costco run first thing this morning, and then make them play Trivial Pursuit this afternoon, the NEW game, where they can’t win just because all the questions were written before I was born.

Things to talk about!

It’s Kamal Haasan’s birthday! Am I the only one who finds him kind of smug and egotistical? Not in real life (I hardly know him in real life) but in the movies he stars in/produces for himself? It feels like it’s always The Kamal Haasan Show and all the other actors sort of fall behind.

Shahrukh is rumored to be working towards building a permanent studio lot. Is this a good idea or a bad idea? What do you think? I think “good” because you only have to look at the Kapoors to see how a studio lot can bring in steady rental income for generations. No matter where the industry goes (streaming, TV, whatever), they will still need an actual place to film.

Hrithik is going to be in a video game? Can someone explain this to me, as someone who has never played a video game?

  1. I cannot stand Kamal Hasan and am unsure why. It’s a real problem with vintage Tamil because he is in literally EVERY movie.

A studio is a great idea if you don’t just let it burn down like an idiot.

    • Yes! Thank you! Kamal is the WORST! I can even acknowledge he is a great actor, and I still don’t like him.

I sense some RK Studios bitterness in you….

      • I just actually can’t look at his face. For all I know he’s great, I just cannot with him.

No, I’m totally fine that they pump money into total nonsense and let film heritage go up in flames so they could sell the ground basically as soon as Shashi’s body was cold.

  2. I think the graphics for video games are now at a level where they start to actually use footage of real actors. I’m not sure though if it’s just motion capture for characters modeled on the actors or actual footage.

  3. Video game makers can license the likeness of a famous person (an athlete, an actor) along with the IP rights of a character from a film. This might just be Hrithik looking cool as a game character (like a Hrithik action figure) or Hrithik as one of his action characters.

I watched A Nightmare Before Christmas tonight because the 7- year-old has been wanting to see it. I hadn’t seen it since it was in theaters when I was in high school. It was not quite how I remembered. I was picturing it as a Ranbir movie. Jack is very good at being the Pumpkin King but he’s unsatisfied with his life. Classic tortured artist. He decides to reinvent Christmas and do it better than Santa. Sally loves him for unspecified reasons, just because he’s him. She knows this Christmas thing is going to be a disaster but he doesn’t listen to her, and does it anyway, and it is a disaster. But then he gets to be the good guy in the end and rescue her. Ranbir, right?

    • HA! You are SO RIGHT about Jack being a Ranbir character!!! He also just accepts that everything is made for him and all about him, there’s no moment of “woops, made a big mistake, I should work hard and make it up to folks and apologize”.
