I really really enjoy Neeti Mohan, I even saw her live because I enjoy her so much that I was willing to go to a weird little theater in Chicago and see a weird little show to hear her live. Just an amazing voice! Much more powerful than female playback singers are usually allowed to be in Hindi film.
Neeti Mohan is a Rahman discovery. She was a singer he used in his stage shows and really liked her energy and excitement. So he brought her in to sing “Jiya Re” for a peppy spunky young character who reminded him of her personality.
She did loads of high profile work after that, lots of duets and backing vocals and so on, but she really made her name and fame with “Bombay Velvet”. The whole film builds around her voice, the heroine Anushka is supposed to have this amazing voice that no one can resist. And by golly, I couldn’t resist it! I hated that movie, for sure, but the only parts of it I liked were Neeti’s singing.
And then there’s Jab Harry Met Sejal of course, in which she was one of many singers, and featured in “Raula”
Just to add with something fun, she also sang “Bad Boy” from Saaho!
Anyway, enjoy! It’s Neeti’s birthday, I encourage you to check out some of her songs, and appreciate this unusual voice just like I do.
Neeti is great! Different from her spunky stuff but Neeyum Naanum is stunning

Yes! She’s so good! And you can recognize her voice right away, not like the usual identical singers.

Bad Boy really was great. That woman going WHOO when he falls shirtless from the sky deserves an Oscar.

I love that song. When you ask “what would a 26 male director do if given unlimited budget?”, this song is the answer.

Wow, those are several of my favorite songs. I was a Neeti fan without even knowing it.

Interesting that she’s paired so often with Anushka.

Yeah, it is, isn’t it? I guess they both have something similar that is unique about them. JTHJ was a perfect role for Anushka, and Neeti got Jiya Re because hers was the perfect voice for that character.

Yeah, she does good stuff! I didn’t even include all of them, she also did the “Kashmir” song from Chennai Express.

Neeti is such a lovely singer! I have looked at her non-movie music and she is so good. Her voice has that nice edge that Shreya Goshal lacks since she is all beauty, but she is not all wonderfully rough like the Nooran Sisters either. She is like the middle of both of them, with all the positives of having her own spunk to go with it.
These are my favourite non-movie songs of hers.
You already put Jiya Jale, so I will include this. It is such a lovely song. This made me fall in love with her, and see what else she had done.

Yes! She is strong without feeling rough in her voice.

Neeti’s great! I particularly love this Tseries mixtape she did with Salim Merchant on the songs Dua and Saware, none of them originally sung by her, but still my favorite versions. The entire arrangement is haunting and beautiful!
Konjum Nilavu is up there as an all time favorite. Neeti’s version is good but honestly it can’t match Anupama in the original!

She so great! And it seems like maybe she does less straight playback singing because she is so interested in the other stuff? Like, interesting covers and remixes and collaborations and things, instead of just singing the song for a heroine in a movie.
