Friday WatchAlong: Mirzya! For Kirre’s Birthday! Starting at 3pm Chicago Time Right Here

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIRRE!!!!!! I am so excited that, thanks to time zones, we all get to be the first ones to wish you, at midnight Finnish time which should be one hour into this movie (right? Did I do time zones correctly?).

Mirzya! It’s based on a tragic legend that the filmmakers think we all already know, so the whole love story and tragedy part should not surprise us. But also, so sexy! And Harsh, so beautiful! Oh, and it’s on Netflix.

    • Popka – I send this comment to the wrong person last time by mistake. Last week Margaret asked if she should watch Shalimar and whether it was masala or just boring. I figured you would have so many strong opinions on this topic!

      • Oh my god, Shalimar is INSAAAANE. It doesn’t really have enough plot in my opinion, and it’s boring in places because of bad pacing and a bunch of other stuff going wrong, but it’s pretty entertaining regardless because of all the fringe stuff being soooo crazy. Just Sylvia Miles is worth watching for honestly. I mean it is VERY bad, though.

        • HA! It is so bonkers that it is thoroughly entertaining to me. I didn’t think it was boring at all but this type of movie is basically made for me! I think given her love for movies like Rajkumar with Anil, I think she will like this one. It is just nutso.

          • Well, I think it could have some more insanity stuffed into it but man it is entertaining. That snake movie we watched was less crazy, but you have to have patience for 70s bad movies.

  1. Hey, Chicago International Film Festival!!! My first thought was “shoot, I missed the chance to see it on the big screen.” But I saw it on the big screen! The day it released! It played all over the city!!! Film Festivals are dumb.

  2. I shouldn’t be, but I keep thinking about gun powder and horses arriving and trying to date this. It’s foolish, I know. It’s Olden Times.

  3. Saiyami Kher has such an interesting look. Really good casting for this movie, she feels immediately kind of throwback and ancient.

    • yeah I didn’t refresh the screen enough to see your warning until it was too late – but by the end of the movie no one was overly traumatized.

  4. That moment when the crowd of dancers leaps the gap and it goes into slow motion is the moment in theaters that I wanted to stand up and applaud and knew this was going to be a really special movie.

  5. I do think that the movie wanted that shock, wanted us to feel like they were a no rules kind of throw back couple right from the start. Having a simpler childhood seperation wouldn’t do it.

  6. The music, the story, the lyrics, and the cinematography just make this montage song so much more than it should be. Not to mention the little boy’s intense eyes, just such good acting.

  7. Only slightly related, but hilarious to me. My friend sent me a video of her 3 year old falling off A STATIONARY TOY HORSE. She was rocking back and forth like it was moving, and got thrown right out of the saddle. I think it means she can never be royalty, because she has a terrible Seat.

  8. Okay, so I’m telling the kids that Harsh is the little boy in the past. And Harsh died and was re-incarnated into the little boy. Am I right?

    • Yes. Harsh and Saiyami are destined to play out the same tragic love story over and over again through history. And in the present version, they were separated by him going to jail.
