Why is 420 the marijuana holiday in America? I am sure there is a reason, but I don’t know it. Anyway, it is. And therefore, Bhang songs collection!
Just in case somehow you don’t know, Bhang is marijuana milk. It’s an ancient ancient thing in India, not a new hippy invention like pot brownies. You grind the leaves into a paste, then mix them with milk and filter and spice and so on. And then folks drink it on religious holidays, it is available everywhere on certain days. What I have heard from folks who tried it is that it is SUPER strong too, like way more than our weak western tastes can handle.
Anyway, it’s a great set-up for a song! People get a little drunk and happy, but it is all in good fun.

My favorite bhang song will always be the original Khaike Pan Banaraswala with Amitabh! It starts with “are bhang ka rang jama ho chacha chak” and everyone in the background making bang during the entire song! It’s a classic! IMO the song from Don does not even compare.

I’ve always been curious, is the Paan in the Amitabh song supposed to be laced with marijuana? Or does he just have the munchies or something?

I heard Madhuri in an interview talk about how she left her kids one evening to go out and they were watching Koyla, and then when she got back she found a note asking her why she was acting so weird in that song. I always feel very uncomfortable when I see that song. Intoxication and kids aren’t my preferred bedfellows.
I think Madhubala is my favorite song here, but so many of them are fun to watch. Thank you!

Hadn’t even thought about Dum Maro Dum, which is on me. Also of course how very snippy Dev Anand is about all these hippies smoking, but of course Bhang is culturally significant and totally fine.
