IMPORTANT FOOD QUESTIONS! Nuts in Brownies, Mustard or Mayo on Sandwiches, Whipped Cream on Milkshakes

We have been avoiding major divisive issues, but I think it is time to take a firm stand and face our differences. Yes, it is another Food Rules post!!!!

Nuts in Brownies, pro or con?

My father is FIRMLY anti nuts in brownies. To the point that it apparently came up on one of my parents’ first dates and has remained a controversial topic since then. Because my mother likes nuts in brownies. But such is her devotion that for 50 years, she has been making nut-less brownies. Or half and half brownie pans. Or at the very least, only putting nuts on top so they can be picked off.

I think I may sincerely not have a horse in this race? Except that, thanks to my deprived childhood, whenever I see brownies with nuts I think “oooo, fancy! Not like the nutless brownies I get at home”.

Mayo or Mustard on Sandwiches, when is it appropriate to use one versus the other?

I almost always prefer mustard on sandwiches. So far as I am concerned, mustard with turkey, chicken, roast beef, even tuna salad, all good. But even I draw the line at mustard with salami or other cured meats, that’s just weird. What about you? Which sandwiches say “mustard” and which say “mayo”? Or do you mix them together like a FREAK?

Whipped Cream on Drinks, where do you draw the line?

I assume all but the most extreme accept whipped cream on milkshakes. But what about floats? Do you put whipped cream on floats? Or malteds? Or egg creams? Or fruit smoothies? Or bubble tea? Or iced coffee? For me, I say cream on top of anything dairy rather than water based. So if it is a yogurt smoothie, yes. But if it is a iced smoothie, no. Also no floats, yes malteds, no egg creams, no iced coffee, but yes iced frappe. It’s complicated.

  1. 1. Nuts in EVERTHING! I only ever eat anything chocolaty if there are nuts in it.
    2. Burgers should have ketchup, mustard, and mayo. Sausage sandwiches and hot dogs should have mustard and no mayo. No mayo or mustard on cold cut sandwiches. On most cold cut sandwiches, I will add Italian hot giardiniera or something similar.
    3. Whipped cream should be eaten with strawberries. And a proper Indian cold coffee should have ice cream in it and on top, and not whipped cream. I don’t really drink milkshakes but my husband said whipped cream can sometimes be on milkshakes but sometimes it’s overkill.

    • 1. I do like to think of nuts in chocolate as the substantial protein part of the “meal”. For a while my emergency snack was to run into a convenience store and buy dark chocolate with almonds.

      2. NOTHING on cold cut sandwiches? That’s CRAZY!!! don’t you need something as the mortar to hold the bread onto the meat?

      3. What about Starbucks flavored fancy frappes?

      • I put giardiniera or hot pepper like the one from Potbelly’s on cold cut sandwiches. It’s spicy veggies and has oil and vinegar which binds everything. I also generally add cheese and toast everything so it is nice and gooey!

Whipped cream on frappes is fine. I can usually only have a couple sips though. It is too heavy for me.

    • Horseradish is under utilized as a condiment, I think. At leas tin America.

  2. 1. No nuts in brownies!! It ruins the smooth fudgy texture.

    2. Yes for Mayo + Mustard…like in an Egg Salad sandwich…or an avocado sandwich…you need both! (p.s. I don’t eat meat)

    3. No whipped cream on any drink…its too much..it just makes the already sugary-fatty drink even more of a calorie bomb.

    • 1. You and my Dad should get together.

      2. Yes, for a salad based sandwich, I agree. Mayo mixed with egg salad or tuna or chicken, and then the mustard as the garnish on top. But if it is something like, for instance, an eggplant sandwich, NO!

      3. No no, the whipped cream gives you that bit of fat and protein to cut through the sugar!

      • Whipped cream as a protein! This is the most controversial statement you’ve made all year. Reminds me of the commercials in Europe trying to sell Kinder chocolates as a source of milk.

        • It is absolutely a protein!!!!! Coffee without whipped cream, that’s a beverage. Coffee with whipped cream, that’s a complete breakfast.

  3. All these options seem completely reasonable to me, so I’ll talk about it from a personal perspective.

    1. I don’t usually put nuts in the brownies I bake, but I’m not averse to it. But one condition: the brownies have to be INTERESTING. Not just normal brownies with some walnuts thrown in. If you’re adding something, make it count! Add some cheese, some caramel, some butterscotch. And of course, brownies MUST be fudgy.

    2. Mustard all the way! But only really because I used to go through tubs of mayo when I went through my teenage growth spurt and now I can’t look at mayo without feeling sick. Same goes for peanuts.

    3. Not a personal fan of whipped cream on anything except a few desserts. So…ehh?

    • 1. I think I have to take exception here. brownies need nothing in addition! MAYBE nuts, otherwise just plain brownies in a pan, and I am happy. All the other stuff is just a distraction.

      2. I know just what you mean about Mayo. I can’t handle large amounts, I almost always ask for it to be left off when I order sandwiches because people just slather it on. I will use it at home though, when I have control over how much it is.

      3. You are INSANE! Whipped cream is the best

  4. This is bad timing for me. I’ve been exercising tons, getting fit, but my knees often hurt. So I figured if I loose weight my knees might not hurt so much. I signed up for Noom. I’ve lost 10 pounds so far, but now I can say that whipped cream will never be worth it, I would rather have cheese. And while I like both mayo and mustard on everything, I should probably stick to the mustard. And nuts in sweets is delicious, but a great many children hate nuts in all things thus your father may have some childlike qualities. That said, I’ll take the cheese over the brownies too.

    • I secretly agree that my father has childlike qualities. At least with the nuts in brownies. His Mom, my Grandma, always loaded her brownies with nuts. And I can picture little boy Dad thinking to himself “when I am grown up, NO NUTS”.

  5. 1. If you must dilute your chocolate by baking it into brownies, might as well go all the way and add nuts too.

    2. Mustard and mayo are just dressings and can be used separately or together or replaced by any other dressing you fancy. Sandwiches are assemblages of ingredients like salads but with more meat and fewer vegetables. Mayo is helpful when the meat is on the dry side and needs more fat, mustard is helpful when meat is on the fatty side and needs an acid to balance.

    3. Once you put whipped cream on a drink, you need to accept that it is a dessert. Coffee with whipped cream is a warmer version of coffee ice cream. Smoothie with whipped cream is a blended banana split, etc.

    • 1. I take it that you are a “dark chocolate bars” kind of person? In which case, slightly different question, dark chocolate bar with nuts or without nuts?

      2. So when I am placing my order at subway, I should first ask “is the turkey dry today or nicely fatty”?

      3. We are similar here, but of course my argument is that once you put whipped cream in a drink, it is a full meal. Just as you could have cake for breakfast, you can also have a mocha with whipped cream for breakfast.

      • 1. Dark chocolate with nuts for the snack meal because it’s more filling. Dark chocolate without for dessert.

        2. I have my standard deli sandwich orders based on how I know they make their sandwiches.
they usually involve mustard and pickles. Thee reason delis are such wonderful places is you can ask for your sandwich however you like it, even variations that seem crazy to me like adding raw onions or American cheese. (Being generous and putting Subway in the deli category here even though their selection is limited and their bread is technically a pastry.)

        • Somehow, Chicago just isn’t a Deli place. We have a few, but not really a “standard deli order” kind of variety. Today, I am probably going to get lunch from Jimmy Johns. Which is LIKE a Deli, right?

  6. 1. I’ve had issues with textures of certain foods for my entire life, to the point where I won’t eat certain foods because it’s uncomfortable for me to eat them. In my head, brownies are not supposed to crunch, so if there are nuts in them, I might have a weird physical reaction. Not allergies, but just like squirming cuz I’m having a terrible time.
    2. Mayo for most things, but it really depends on the sandwich. Turkey, chicken, I only put mayo on roast beef to mix it with ketchup instead of just buying Russian dressing like I should. I don’t like mustard at all, but it’s acceptable to me on salami sandwiches only, and even then in the tiniest amounts. But I also get sick of salami sandwiches so fast, so I barely remember how it tastes.
    3. I, uh, also hate whipped cream. It tastes like nothing but processed air. So I will accept it on milkshakes for the photo op, and then immediately scrape it off and hope someone eats it so I don’t have a pile of whipped cream sitting on a napkin like a psycho.
