Happy Saturday!!! This is a last minute WatchAlong, so I’m not sure if anyone can join. I will give it 15 minutes and then give up. But if you can join, this is a delightful insane 90s twins romantic comedy and you will like it!
Jeans
It’s on Netflix (yaaaay!), it’s a little less than 3 hours, it has a great soundtrack and beautiful young Aishwarya, and a bonkers plot. Also, lots of USA scenes so it’s appropriate for the 4th of July weekend.
At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment and then see if anyone joins me!
Ramu is clearly Visu and Madhu’s biggest shipper, coz later on he’ll ship them even after [SPOILER] Madhu pretended to be her own twin in front of him sigh

I do think the whole nervous lovers thing was played pretty cutely…one of my fave parts of this movie besides Ajooba

Agree! I think Shankar does super young love stories really well. The problem is, he can’t do Grown Up love stories. Aish and Rajini in Robot was like two teenagers, but they were supposed to be adults?

I also feel like even tho Endhiran is the more ambitious movie, in hindsight Aish’s role in Jeans was the better of the two. In Endhiran she is more or less just a source of conflict between Chitti and Dr. Vaseegharan. In Jeans the film actually explores what this bizarre situation is doing to *her*.

I remember reading somewhere that at this point Shankar had been wanting to cast Aish in a film of his for a long time. He’d even named a character in “Indian” Aishwarya after her, apparently

Oooohhhh a bit of trivia I heard about this song was that this particular outfit (maroon-gold one) was partly styled by Aish .. apparently she decided to pin the blouse differently and it worked.

But I heard this trivia a long time ago so it could be inaccurate

I choose to believe it.

Cool! This song is a combo of really neat outfits (like the matching suits by the airplane) and not so great outfits (like the super fluffy dress)

I think the actress playing the mean sister in law is the actress Radhika, I’ve seen her in a lot of Hindi films too

I recognise the nice sister in law too actually but I don’t recall which films I saw her in

This part of the film makes me very sad 😭

Ah, I went away to swap my laundry around and I came back toa super sad scene! I think the key is not to marry twins, but to try to avoid marrying Bad People.

Nachiappan coulda just let that woman go. His twin was so super close to divorcing her anyway 🤧

The idea that the sister in law killed the twins mom by making her walk to get her own soda is… extreme.

Tho tbh he did a pretty great job with the twins. They ended up pretty well

Also tbh you can always have twins who hate each other? Imagine if Nachiappan married Visu and Ramu off to a pair of twins like that, then they’d all be back to square one! 🤦🏽♀️

Exactly!!!! Maybe just treat wives as People and try to find Good People? Instead of some family formula?

Paati was so set on matchmaking she said a lie over a thing as holy as camphor 😭

She is really lucky it worked out! This makes no sense and would be a really hard lie to keep up forever.

Yeah like seriously how was she going to keep this charade going!! She clearly didn’t think this through

I love this whole scene!!! Especially in contrast to the “bad” family we saw in the flashback. This is a totally silly family

Madhu shoulda just followed her own instinct and gone and told Visu

Why is Aish still wearing western clothes back in Tamil Nadu? that skirt is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to short for India.

Ah, now I see why Aish is still Western! It’s so we can tell the difference between Real Aish and Fake Aish!

Ramu was clearly just ready to get a girl the moment his twin fell in love. The minute Krishaveni spoke about Madhu’s twin he was all for it.

ALSO! He brought products from the States for her even before they met 🤧

Whoa, hoops in the skirts? Was that a Mughal thing?

Yeah this is clearly a Mughal aesthetic. The colours and Ramu’s outfit too.

Speaking of the Western aesthetic, I do like that Madhu is made to have a different accent for Vaishnavi too, and she has a hard time switching between the two.

This Madhesh is clearly multi-talented

This makeup products scene kinda feels like a parallel to the gift giving scene between Visu and Madhu with the shirts

Like Madhu feels hurt when Visu rejects the shirts, now Ramu feels hurt and humiliated when Vaishu says she can’t use modern products.

Wouldn’t it have been an interesting movie if Aish ended up falling for the other twin?
Although I guess that is just a twist on the standard “mere brother ki dulhan” sort of romance.

Yeah, it would have been so much easier to just wait and try to convince the Dad! This plot would make more sense it Aish was pregnant.

While idk if the Indian tradition thing is altogether accurate in the exact way, the whole idea of eating from your partners plate in a culture where doing that with anyone else is def there. They call it “eating jhoota” coz it’s usually not done, but is permissible when you’re that familiar with each other.

To be clear, “jhoota” is the Hindi one, I’m not sure what it’s called in Tamil

I feel like there’s a parallel somewhere about Ramu turning to drink (briefly) the way Pechiappen did, and Visu allowing his grief to become a form of anger. Only difference is that clearly Madhu is a nice woman stuck in a bad situation, and Ramu is a lot more resilient in a way.
LikeLike
So like, what would happen to their dads wouldn’t happen to them coz Madhu – and hopefully the person Ramu will really fall in love with – would not feel comfortable betraying the family the way Pechiappen’s wife did.

EXACTLY! Because they aren’t woman forced into this family relationship, they want to be married and in this family.

I like that Ramu basically let out all his grief and and was okay by the morning. It clearly was a crush he built up in his head and he made his peace with it when he realized it was all a ruse.

Also nice that Pechiappen feels this is an opportunity to fix the wrongs done by his wife (and by extension him, because he wasn’t able to push back against her), and gives his blessing for the wedding.
