Weekend WatchAlong: 8am, Jeans! On Netflix!!!!

Happy Saturday!!! This is a last minute WatchAlong, so I’m not sure if anyone can join. I will give it 15 minutes and then give up. But if you can join, this is a delightful insane 90s twins romantic comedy and you will like it!

Jeans

It’s on Netflix (yaaaay!), it’s a little less than 3 hours, it has a great soundtrack and beautiful young Aishwarya, and a bonkers plot. Also, lots of USA scenes so it’s appropriate for the 4th of July weekend.

At 8am Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment and then see if anyone joins me!

  1. Ramu is clearly Visu and Madhu’s biggest shipper, coz later on he’ll ship them even after [SPOILER] Madhu pretended to be her own twin in front of him sigh

    • Agree! I think Shankar does super young love stories really well. The problem is, he can’t do Grown Up love stories. Aish and Rajini in Robot was like two teenagers, but they were supposed to be adults?

      • I also feel like even tho Endhiran is the more ambitious movie, in hindsight Aish’s role in Jeans was the better of the two. In Endhiran she is more or less just a source of conflict between Chitti and Dr. Vaseegharan. In Jeans the film actually explores what this bizarre situation is doing to *her*.

  3. I remember reading somewhere that at this point Shankar had been wanting to cast Aish in a film of his for a long time. He’d even named a character in “Indian” Aishwarya after her, apparently

  4. Oooohhhh a bit of trivia I heard about this song was that this particular outfit (maroon-gold one) was partly styled by Aish .. apparently she decided to pin the blouse differently and it worked.

  5. Ah, I went away to swap my laundry around and I came back toa super sad scene! I think the key is not to marry twins, but to try to avoid marrying Bad People.

  6. Also tbh you can always have twins who hate each other? Imagine if Nachiappan married Visu and Ramu off to a pair of twins like that, then they’d all be back to square one! 🤦🏽‍♀️

  7. Ramu was clearly just ready to get a girl the moment his twin fell in love. The minute Krishaveni spoke about Madhu’s twin he was all for it.

  8. Speaking of the Western aesthetic, I do like that Madhu is made to have a different accent for Vaishnavi too, and she has a hard time switching between the two.

  9. While idk if the Indian tradition thing is altogether accurate in the exact way, the whole idea of eating from your partners plate in a culture where doing that with anyone else is def there. They call it “eating jhoota” coz it’s usually not done, but is permissible when you’re that familiar with each other.

      • Oooh one other thing I learned while checking the film’s page on IMDb! Apparently Madhesh’s character was played by the choreographer of the film! No wonder he got his little space to dance like Aish in this song!

  10. Ramu would make someone a lovely husband and I’d like to believe that Madhu recognising that makes her even more uncomfortable with this charade.

  11. I feel like there’s a parallel somewhere about Ramu turning to drink (briefly) the way Pechiappen did, and Visu allowing his grief to become a form of anger. Only difference is that clearly Madhu is a nice woman stuck in a bad situation, and Ramu is a lot more resilient in a way.

    • So like, what would happen to their dads wouldn’t happen to them coz Madhu – and hopefully the person Ramu will really fall in love with – would not feel comfortable betraying the family the way Pechiappen’s wife did.

  12. I like that Ramu basically let out all his grief and and was okay by the morning. It clearly was a crush he built up in his head and he made his peace with it when he realized it was all a ruse.

  13. Also nice that Pechiappen feels this is an opportunity to fix the wrongs done by his wife (and by extension him, because he wasn’t able to push back against her), and gives his blessing for the wedding.
