Happy Monday! What a weird way to phrase that, “the day before the 4th of July”. Only makes sense in the context of “the 4th of July” being the name of a holiday. We (Americans) really should think about changing to “Independence Day” or something so it’s less confusing.
Here is where you get to ask me anything you want from “what movies are you looking forward to seeing?” to “what have you been doing with your summer so far?” just keep swinging back here all week as you think of new questions!
Now, question for you! My friend and I have been doing a lot of Couch Movies, and we both really like wacky old school Masala stuff. What should we watch next???
We watched Dil Aashna Hai, LOVED IT. We also love Shashi, and Shammi, and whacky 90s. Any ideas? What’s good on Prime/Netflix?

Gosh looking at that trailer I’m hoping it is not 3 hours long. I probably can’t tolerate it for 3 hours 🙄

Kirre — I should have known you’d have already posted the trailer here! As usual thank you for always altering us before anyone else.
Also, Ahhhh, I am so excited about this. I love that Karan fully leaned into creating a family romance spectacular extravaganza! My sister and I are trying to figure out if we can watch it on Friday or Saturday.
If Margaret plans to watch it on Friday, I may wait for her review and watch it on Saturday! Either way, I am so excited!
Will you be able to see it in theaters?

I am also excited! Just the kind of melodrama and family drama escapism I need right now.
Yea I think I will be able to watch it in the theatre!

I would’ve really loved to suggest Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, but the only platforms it’s on across the board is YouTube and Google Play sigh.
…I also wouldn’t mind Zamaana Deewana but that’s my bias speaking 🤣🤣 Or Deewana!!

Margaret! Thanks for the card. I know I’ve been missing in action, but I’ve only just reached the point in Covid recovery where I can do almost all normal stuff again. Who knows when I’ll be able to watch movies regularly again.
I think you’ve seen most wacky masala I can think of. There’s always Paap aur Punya, Haseena Maan Jayegi if you haven’t seen it, or Dulhe Raja. And, of course, Geeta Mera Naam. The late 80s movies with Shashi and Govinda are all of them great as well.

I’m not currently subscribed to Prime or Netflix, but from what I’m seeing available on Prime, for Shashi -Jab jab Phool Khile, Hasina Maan Jayegi, Aa Gale lag Jaa, Suhana Safar, Chori Mera Kaam (haven’t seen but sold on Shashi goofily grinning while wearing a jail uniform on the poster). Guessing you’ve seen the Yash Chopra ones and Amitabh-Shashi ones. For Shammi – Evening in Paris, Prince, Rajkumar, Professor, Bluffmaster, Andaz.
90s – do you want to rewatch stuff or new ones? If you haven’t seen these then 100 Days, Ghar Jamai, Betaab, Nagina and Nigahen (Sridevi snake movies).

Thanks a lot, Margaret, for sending me that card…it made me smile 🙂 (and thinking of you – again – very fondly).
ShahRukh lives challenging times (e.g. the new attempt to harm him through the Wankhede guy)…and so do I (nothing difficult, though, just time- and energy-consuming).
Nevertheless, I still keep me updated…on your blog and on a forum 🙂 – visiting you and the DCIB community is always something I enjoy (also without writing myself).

I think my favorite wacky masala movie was that Robin Hood one with Madhuri.

Not sure where the Bawaal trailer conversation is happening here, but wow I have strong feelings about that one!!!! What’s your take?
I find it absolutely tasteless and disgusting to see how Nitesh Tiwari has juxtaposed a romantic drama with images of Hitler and the Holocaust. I have noticed in Hindi films especially, that Hitler is often namechecked in really odd ways. This takes it to an extreme that is not just uncomfortable but just wrong and irresponsible. Too bad this interesting new pairing has been completely ruined by a terrible director/writer decision.

Thank you! I just watched it. It will either be the pinnacle of tone deafness, or maybe it’s just a bad trailer and the film will actually confront ignorance?

I think the crux of the issue is that Indians (I’m including myself in this) in general just do not have a grasp on the enormity of Hitler’s crimes. Popular culture has made him synonymous with a very strict authority figure and that’s it. That too is often played for comedy. I don’t know why that is the case.
