This would normally be a terrible choice for a watchalong because you really have to focus. But I’ve seen it 3 times now, and I’ve read most of the book it’s based on, so I THINK, I can keep up the footnote comments and tell you what you missed and all of that.
Ponniyin Selvan 1
It’s on Prime, it’s gorgeous and complex and exciting and all of those things. And I will probably give you a little cheat sheet on the WatchAlong post so you can keep track of how folks are related and stuff. As usual, southern films expect us to have all the specific relationship words memorized and figure out through dialogue who is who to whom.
Yaaaaaaay, super super complicated historical film with awesome costumes and Aish’s best ever character!

As much as I love & deeply respect Mani Ratnam, it feels like he threw all his editing skills out of the window when making PS-1 & PS-2 by linearly following the book.
All that effort to not offend the oldies in PS1 came to nought in PS2 as he had to drop some parts of that convoluted plot & ended up offending the book fans anyway.
It is our solemn duty as mani & movie fans to offer fan fiction with better editing (to make-up for the atrocious work done by Sir in these 2 movies)
So here goes mine:
Mani should have opened part-1 with flashback opening from part-2 (instead of Kamal’s monologue)
Entire 1st half of part-1 should’ve been Karikalan-Nandini
Vandiyathevan introduced after interval part-1
Part-1 could’ve ended with Vandhiya Thevan’s planned trip for Sri Lanka
Also add some oomai rani flashback in #PS1 first half / second half as needed
Part-2 could’ve started with the boat woman song & then introduce Arunmozhi Varman (Ponniyin Selvan)
What I am saying is keeping Ponniyin Selvan (Arunmozhli Varman) solely to part-2 would have set expectations clearly to everyone that this is Mani’yin Karikalan rather than Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan !!

You have such detailed suggestions! I just wanted him to find a way to keep the baby swap plot, because it’s all kinds of confusing without that.
