Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the Day Before Courtney’s Birthday????

Happy Monday!!! And Happy Birthday Courtney!!!! I hope you will finally get to see Rocky Aur Rani, I forgot to tell you, there’s a Varun cameo! It’s tiny, but it’s there.

Here is where you get to ask me anything from “how big is that Varun cameo?” to “why are cameos a thing in Indian film and why are they called ‘friendly appearances’?” Just keep swinging back here all week as you think of new questions!

Now, question for you! I put up a post for Kajol on Saturday, but that doesn’t seem like enough celebration for her. What is your favorite Kajol film/role?

I know I’m basic, but Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She is just SO GOOD. It’s her movie all the way.

  2. I love Kajol in Yeh Dillagi. Personally just because I enjoy Yeh Dillagi a little bit more than Sabrina because I always felt odd at Audrey Hepburn and Humphry Davis’s pairing. In Yeh Dillagi, Kajol has this lovely youthfulness and maturity she brings to the role. The way she deals with the class conflicts and her relationship is really wonderful. Also there is this really cute video of young Kajol so obviously having a crush on Akshay.

    Watch from 1:30 onwards.

My question is do you like mediocre thriller films remakes? I watched Gumraah and the twist was so bad but from my knowledge of the wikipedia plot summary; the original Tamil film seems much better. I wonder do you know of any thriller hindi film remakes which are better than the original?

    • Hmmm. I think maybe Ghajini? The plot was radically changed for the Hindi version, but I think that made it a little tighter and clearer, plus the production values of the Hindi are so good. Also, and this is just personal taste more than anything, I really like Run and probably like it better than the Tamil original.

    • Tamil version of Gumraah is indeed much better. The story is sorted differently so the twist seems more natural and less forced. I liked Gumraah but yes, it’s far from tamil version.

      • I think I didn’t enjoy Gumraah’s twist as it was quite predictable. I just thought it would be something else due to the twist being publicised greatly. I also thought it had numerous plot holes and didn’t really make sense. Though I do wish Aditya Roy Kapur just tried more and did more movies.

  4. OK, I’m going to admit something here that might get me kicked off (despite Margaret’s no judgment policy!). I don’t think I like Kajol anymore and I’m not sure I ever really did? Here’s the thing, I definitely like Kajol and SRK in their pairings (and K3G and Dilwale, strangely enough, are my two favorites of hers). But I don’t really like any of her other movies that much. Maybe We Are Family would tug on my heartstrings on the rewatch and it’s one of the few films of hers that I have on my shelf. But that’s it. Am I a bad Hindi film fan now?!

Her more recent performance are shrill and blah and her off-screen persona isn’t as charming as it used to be. I’m really digging a hole here:)

I think I’m coming to the slow conclusion that for me, Hindi film fandom really starts with the arrival of circa 2000 Hrithik, Abhishek, and Shahid as heroes and my favorite heroes (except for Saif and some roles of Ajay and SRK) are those two and the younger guys like Ranveer, Ranbir, Arjun, etc. And since I’m not a huge fan of early 90s or 80s films, I also prefer the classic 50s-70s films more than the Khan era and their era of heroines. Kajol, Sridevi, Madhuri, and Juhi all seem so dated to me, like if I’m going to watch heroines from that time in film, I’m definitely going to prefer the 80s and 90s Hollywood romances and rom-coms that I grew up with and I think it’s all just a matter of timing!

Questions: Who do you want to see on this season of Koffee With Karan (it’s apparently in the works)? SRK is a definite and I think there will definitely be a RARKPK episode, too. More South stars again.

How do you decorate your home to highlight your Hindi film fandom? I vaguely recall that you have a few SRK pictures up? Beyond a Jodha Akhbar film poster in my kitchen and my packed shelf of Indian films and filmi books on my bookshelves, I don’t have anything else. I kind of want to do a little gallery style wall display of some of my favorite actors and films, both film poster, fan art, and maybe even really beautiful magazine covers or pages.

    • HOW DARE YOU NOT LOVE KAJOL?!?!?!? Nah, that’s okay. I know a few people who don’t like her. Her personality is so strong it tends to seep through into her onscreen performances a lot of the time, and if you don’t happen to like that kind of personality, you won’t like a lot of her work.

I’m like you in that the early 2000s are “my” era of Indian film. But, while I like Hrithik and Abhishek and Shahid, it’s early 2000s and on SRK that I enjoy most. I like all SRK, but that early 2000s era is my favorite. There was something special there, globalization bringing in more modern themes and characters but without yet losing the uniqueness of the films.

I have gone through many eras of film decoration! In my first apartment, I did “gallery wall” like you mention, and I really liked it. But then I got too many bookshelves and windows in my next place and I had to pair down. I’ve had a huge DDLJ poster since college, that is always the center piece, and of course I have my Dard E Disco poster in the bathroom. And then a friend gave me a massive Veer-Zaara wall hanging that wouldn’t fit anywhere, so I ended up hanging it in front of the kitchen windows. Besides that, I had some small magnets and mini-frames of things, but nothing really big. And then in my last apartment all of a sudden I had OODLES of wall space and I dug out a bunch of posters from the 2000s that a friend had given me and I had picked up, and I did a whole mini movie poster room! that was super fun, it was the smaller room where I put my TV, and I had about 7 framed posters up, just in cheap plastic frames. When I moved to my current place, I decided I was gonna upgrade and only have real framed stuff. I got my DDLJ poster mounted, and it looks amazing, and it has a whole wall to itself in the living room. I put Veer Zaara in the sunporch. Dard E Disco in the bathroom, obviously. And everything else is waiting until I save up enough money to have it professionally framed.

Oh right, and I also have my Bahubali swords mounted in a shadow box! They dominate the front hall.

      • Oh yeah it was your Dard E Disco poster I was thinking of…so fun! I do really want to refresh my wall art and though I would probably create this gallery wall in my bedroom or replace my Jodhaa Akhbar poster with it in my kitchen. I’m in a funk with my apartment decor. I don’t really like anything right now. I need a fun project and this might be it! There’s some fun fan art on etsy but I think I really need to mine my smallish stash of Filmfares and Vogue Indias. I hate to tear anything out, but they are not doing any good sitting in boxes on my shelves. Small versions of film posters are also the way to go. I’ve wanted the RamLeela poster where Deepika’s skirt takes up most of the image and can never find it cheap enough.

I bought a Virat Kohli FunkoPop recently just to add to my Bollywood bookshelves of DVDs and books and it’s cute. Wouldn’t it be amazing if they did Bollywood stars, but I’m so made that they still haven’t done the Bridgerton characters! I’m so tempted to buy a Katrina Kaif Barbie right now, too.

    • Ugh! I’m having such a hard time psyching myself up to it!!! I think because season 1 was so deep and real and stuff, and I didn’t know that going in so I was just enjoying the journey. But now I KNOW it’s gonna be deep and real and so on and I’m not sure I’m up for that level of emotional torment.

  7. Happy Birthday, Courtney! Hope you did something fun to celebrate!

Did you see that Red White and Royal Blue is coming out this weekend? Are you planning on watching it right away? I am so excited to watch it and hope someone else watches it too so we can chat about it!

    • Thank you filmikudhi! Of course I did!! The date has been plastered in my brain since I found out it comes out the same day as Heart of Stone (the Netflix movie with Gal Gadot and Alia Bhatt) and all of that is my birthday week! When the trailer came out, I watched it at least 5 times in a row and have obsessively scoured twitter for all the 30 second clips that have come out (and also watched them over and over again). Apparently it’s become so much my personality, that for my birthday, my roommate got me keychain with the book cover on it, and my sister got me a bookmark with the “history, huh?” quote. Part of the reason my weekend is booked, as I mentioned in my comment, is that (hopefully) some friends are coming over on Sunday to watch the movie. Already planning on a second watch with other people, possibly a third depending on whether my sister comes over too or not. So of course I will be happy to gush after then 🙂

      • My sister and I have been giddy about RW&RB and Heart of Stone coming out this weekend also!!! The trailer and the videos have been so cute!!!

Plus, Made in Heaven comes out tomorrow and the third season of Only Murders also just started. Sooo much good stuff.

P.S., I can just imagine the keychain with the quote and now I want it!

I’m so glad you are having a watch party! Can’t wait to gush about it with you!

  8. Thanks, Margaret! This weekend is booked solid for me, so no plans for Rocky aur Rani yet (besides teaching my dad how to say it, haha), but my theater still has a decent amount of showings for this weekend, so fingers crossed it’ll last. I’ve accepted at this point, though, that I might have to wait for streaming. But my friend sent me the video with the Varun cameo, which was uploaded to YouTube and seems to be the full music video with the other cameos. So fun!! MINOR SPOILER Varun calling Ranveer a heartthrob was my favorite thing of last week END MINOR SPOILER

And my favorite Kajol performance is probably MNIK. Even though we don’t talk about that movie much here for obvious reasons, my heart hurt for Mandira the entire time. She was so good, the emotions were so raw.

    • Allthebest and thoroughly enjoy your birthday time, Courtney (*hug*)
MNIK also is my Kajol-favourite (have to admit that I hardly watched other movies with her outside the ones with ShahRukh).

  9. Margaret – I am with you here. I think Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is by far Kajol’s best performance. I absolutely fell in love with her in that movie. She was just so relatable and gave such a range of emotions in it.

    • KKHH is also my favorite Kajol. The camera loves her so much in that film. She just glows. I still can’t believe that SRK’s charactrer fell for Rani over her. I wonder if that plays into my ambivalence towards Rani as an actress, I never forgave her for portraying someone that took SRK away from Kajol.

  10. I also love Kajol in KKHH, but you know what other movie used her perfectly? Minsara Kanavu. She was so good, and perfect in this role. Like I felt the movie breathed when she was on screen.
