Happy Saturday! I got to sleep allllllllllllll the way to 8am today. And now I get to watch this lovely thing with you lovely people, and drive around doing errands, and then come home and have dinner with The Upstairs People. Oh, and if everyone ends up being too busy to come, I will give it 15 minutes for someone to join and then quit posting comments.
Thank You For Coming
Now I’m nervous about picking this movie! What if y’all hate it? But then, sometimes the best watchalongs are the ones where we hate the movie.
At 8am I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and then we can all just keep commenting along from there! If you join late, just fast forward to however many minutes past 8am Chicago time it is.
Oooooo, she’s still got a thing for Arjun??? But, it’s her engagement party. Oh Bhumi.

To the point of all her exes coming, I read the interactions as more about Bhumi than them. She’s still flirty, she’s still thinking “what ifs”, she’s not acting like someone who has made up her mind and is settled.

Yeah. She is just listening to her stupid grandma and thinks she “should” just get settled and married. She doesn’t actually want it.

Remember in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani? Ranbir shows up at the wedding thinking that Kalki is “settling”. And then you realize all this dorky dopey over the top stuff is fun because she really loves her dorky dopey over the top fiance. Unlike Bhumi who is NOT into it.

I think it was night two. They had the little family party, and then the next night the huge everyone is invited party.

I think it’s interesting, and a good choice, that she’s never talked about either financial security or babies in this “I want to find happily ever after” thing. She is just worried about being “weird” in society like she was as the daughter of a single Mom, and about being alone.

I have this stupid hope that the person she slept with was her fiance.

If it was, then that could be a very interesting movie. What if he does good sex, AND is perfect on paper, but is also just boring and a settling choice? She still shouldn’t marry him and that would be a journey to get there.

HA! Agreed!!! Husband has seen many hindi movies with me without subtitles. I am shocked at how much he follows along.
He watched Kofee with Karan with me the Neetu/ Zeenat episode and then when we were watching Amar Akbar Anthony without subtitles he recognized the scene Neetu was referencing in KWK where she says she listened to Parveen Babi’s pulse and was somehow able to tell that she was pregnant.
He also watched Indian Police Force with me and knew who Rohit Shetty was because of KWK. How sure how I feel about all this.

I hate to say this, because I love Rhea, but I think her husband might be a bad director. I think part of the reason this movie isn’t building and hitting the way it could is that it’s not put together right. Bhumi is doing great, the script is good, but somehow it’s just not quite right.

One of the things that amazes me about India is how it follows a small town pattern of the U.S. In my small town people who grew up here often act like life is still in high school, with the same clicks and the same grudges. The people who move here don’t act that way, so the different mentality is more obvious. In so many of the Indian movies I see this life is school continued, despite the massive population. It is perhaps most obvious in this movie.

The sex tape thing is the really bonkers bit to me. I guess I don’t know how child pornography is defined in India, but if this was the U.S., police and forensic interviewers and child legal advocates would have been involved 20 mins ago.
LikeLiked by 3 people
Well, they do make clear that she is graduating. So it’s not child porn, it’s 18 year old porn. And I guess this is a thing in India? “winning” by sharing sexual images taken without permission, and then it ruins the girls life instead of the boys. At least, it’s been a plot point in multiple movies and every time it makes me mad because IT MAKES NO SENSE. Why should she be ashamed? Ia ccept that society shames her, but, like, why?

They only just found out about the sex tape – anger is the first response, blaming someone else when you can’t deal with the iffys and the no one to blame is how humans react. I am surprised that the daughter has to apologize for a sex tape that she didn’t make though.
LikeLike
I’m okay with her blaming her friend for giving advice, but they really needed to put some qualifiers in there acknowledging that it is the boy’s fault most of all.
LikeLike
That’s my point I guess for the sex tape. I get that the shock of it all might make me unreasonably angry at Bhumi. But I’m sorry as a mother my first reaction is to protect my daughter NOT make her apologize in an embarrassing fashion in front of the whole school. F that!
And everything with the other friend. Bhumi thinking she slept with her best friend’s husband. Her friend thinking the worst of her. Come on. You all have been friends for 25 years… be better!

Also, it isn’t the men’s fault women don’t orgasm. It is women’s own fault. Communication, self love, these are all things ignored by simply blaming “men”.

Oh! I think the movie actually comes around on that! If Bhumi had, overall, been able to say what she needed and wanted in a relationship instead of just running after men, if she hadn’t been conditioned to think the problem was with her, then she could have spoken up more easily and helped her partner help her.
LikeLike
See, what would work is if this turned into her best friends both turning on her and that is the final thing that breaks her. As in, breaking up with Jeevan and all the boyfriends was no biggie in the end, it’s the friendships that really matter. Only it wasn’t written/directed quite right. Both of them should have been more sad and disappointed instead of angry. If it had been a sad speech about giving advice casually and thoughtlessly to someone else’s daughter, and casually breaking someone else’s marriage, that would have worked. Made Bhumi think about how she spent all her energy on this marriage quest instead of responsibility for the other things that mattered. But instead they are just crazy angry for no reason.

YES! That part is GENIUS. It has all the meaning needed for the film as a whole, and it reveals so much about her character. Going back to the fairy tale opening. Bhumi was so brainwashed, she thought of sex as only part of the magical Prince Charming. She kept running in circles thinking that someone else had to be the answer to the point of not seeing the obvious.
