Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the Week I Go ON VACATION????

I am SO excited! I am going to a place that is not-home to do things that are not-work for 4 whole days! Oh, and also a place that is not-winter. I got a hotel room with a balcony across the street from a park, and I’m planning to go straight from the airport to a Barnes and Noble and load up on books. And that’s it, that’s the extent of my vacation planning. Park, balcony, books, sunshine. And NOT packing my laptop so I won’t even be tempted to work. Although I am hoping to write some blog posts either on my phone or on a library computer or something.

Here is where you get to ask me anything from “why Barnes and Noble instead of a local bookstore?” to “what blog posts might you write on vacation?” Just keep swinging back here all week as you think of questions!

Now, question for you! What’s your dream vacation? Doing something or not doing something?

As you can see from my description, I am very much a NOT doing something vacation person. I want to go to a different place far away from all my responsibilities and just meander, give the organized working part of my brain a rest. But on the other hand, I know for some people the best vacation is one with new experiences, where your brain gets to enjoy shows and museums and different sorts of stimulation. Where do you fall?

  1. My dream vacation is being anyway near a beach and sleeping 24/7. Just sleeping, eating, swimming, reading, walking around. If I want a more active vacation then its like a very cultural place where I can explore the art scene, music, clothes, etc. But I prefer the sleeping holiday much more

Bejoy Nambiar’s new film Por/Dange is coming out. Its quite interesting as its a bilingual venture. The tamil one seems more raw in my opinion and the hindi one is more sparkly. I prefer the tamil one but I’m happy that actors like Harshvardhan Rane and Ehan Bhatt are getting a chance as well.

    • I have to say that I think the major difference comes from the casting. Ehan feels more raw than Harshvardhan and Arjun more raw than Kalidas. Like both their energies have this inner passion which is for the latter more of chill atmosphere. So the vibe is different because of that in my opinion. I don’t know whether its a miscast.

      • You and me are soulmates! Not only our perfect vacation looks the same but you’re interested in similar movies. Few weeks ago I was writing about Dange/Por on twitter. I watched Starfish recently, it was terrible but it has Ehan Bhat so I don’t regret watching it. Ehan’s presence was like a breath of fresh air . Really the movie was alive only during his scenes, and I started thinking why people don’t cast him more. And than I saw he will be in Bejoy Nambiar’s next and with my beloved Harshwardhan Rane. I was super excited and then I saw the movie was also made in tamil. I watched both trailers and with my all love for Rane, I think Arjun Das is so much better. I was like: Harshwardhan who? But it’s not Harsh’s fault. I think that no another young actor (in all Indian industries) can match Arjun.

IMO Bejoy should have made one movie with Ehan and Arjun. Kalidas is too bland for me. The weakest of all 4 guys.

It will be interesting to see the BO results of both movies. Sadly I think that Hindi version has no chances. The audience is no good. They appreciate nothing. But tamil version will be decent .

Sorry for confused comment but I was so excited to share my thoughts.

I do agree with you that Ehan and Arjun would’ve been perfect casting. As Ehan has that slight glitz while Arjun has this very raw energy. Both of them also have this very passionate raw energy that would have set up an interesting contrast between the two characters. However, as I’ve not seen the movie – I can’t figure out whether the characters are supposed to be chilled out or super passionate. Or who is supposed to be chill and who is supposed to be very tormented. I’m still excited for the film!

  2. Your planned vacation sounds very, very tempting right now. Sun! Actually, I think I would just plain like to stay in a hotel by myself right now. No household planning, nobody to take into account. I’d plan something similar to just “do nothing”.

On the other hand, my best vacation ever was still the two weeks in India in 2012. Nothing BUT new impressions, new experiences, new people. Even crossing the street was an adventure. I never had a moment to think about my problems at home.

Maybe the “relaxing” vacation is a little like processed sugar. Our mind craves it because during our evolution there was never enough calm. But it does need action too every once in a while.

    • I think about that all the time with Albie Dog. He walks me up in the morning, I have to plan my day around his walks, etc. etc. So many irritating little things. On the other hand, overall my happiness has increased ENORMOUSLY since getting him. The irritating little things are what keeps my brain active and happy, having something besides myself to care about.

Vacation wise, you are right. It’s a danger if you truly have NOTHING to do. I tend to get lost, that works for me. As in, I just start walking and after about half an hour I have slightly lost my bearings but, instead of using GPS or asking for directions, I just keep walking and using my wits to find my way home. And then I get back to the hotel feeling like I accomplished something.

Your Indian experience is giving me another idea! I am going to carefully NOT look up coffee shops/restaurants/etc. near my hotel. I can just take it as an adventure! Even finding a coffee shop can make me feel ALIVE.

    • Impulse! I like to stay at hotels that are in central areas, so I just start walking and eat where ever I end up. It’s an adventure!

  3. I suppose it depends on what a vacation means to you. You know that exchange from YJHD between Ranbir and Deepika where he wants to rush somewhere to watch a show and she insists on staying where they are to watch the setting sun, saying that no matter how much we try, we can’t experience everything in life? I’ve realized I try to balance both these philosophies in my life. I won’t insist on doing everything there is to do, but I will try to do as much as possible. For me, vacations and holidays are a chance to see and do new things, preferably outdoors. I want to see as of the world as I can in my life. I find just going away from my regular environment relaxes me, even if I’m physically exhausted doing the activities. When I was doing my doctoral research work, my friends and I went through periods of stress and dejection when experiments didn’t work or results were not as expected. We used to go on day hikes to the nearby hills, starting before the crack of dawn and returning by evening, our bodies aching from the exertion, but feeling happy, forgetting all about work worries for the day. The vital reason I look forward to vacations is to be reminded of the perspective that there’s a much larger world out there and our troubles and worries are not that big in the larger scheme of things.

    • Absolutely! I ended up walking miles every day just going around the city, which was physically exhausting, but also involved seeing so many people going about their lives and realizing that all their lives were happening and mine is just one of many.

  4. New Trailer Alert!

The movie looks sooo nice however for the life of me I can’t figure out why they didn’t cast a dark-skinned actress rather than putting that horrible makeup. It goes against the whole point and makes the film so hypocritical. Otherwise it looks like a very nice film which is equal parts social commentary and fun film. But the dark skinned makeup overshadows everything

    • Exactly my thoughts! I love Ileana, but she is one of the fairest actresses in Bollywood, so why they chose her to play that role? And it’s so stupid, even without this stupid make-up, they always take a beautiful girl with very symmetrical and delicate facial features and pretend she is disgusting because she is a little dark.

      • I agree why Illeana? They could’ve chosen anyone else. I’m sure there are many dark-skinned actresses waiting for their chance. I don’t mind casting a beautiful dark-skinned girl with symmetrical features as many Indians really do pretend that being dark is the end of the world and outscores any beauty someone has. It is a horrible logic that thankfully was never adopted by anyone in my family but I have heard so many times in my life that Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai are not that pretty because they’re not milk-white.

    • Oooo! It’s a little overly sexual, but then that was my same complaint about the first song of Veere Di Wedding and it turned out to be kind of a spoof, so I will assume the same thing. Regular working women characters being shown in a super glam way.
