Happy Monday! It was supposed to be hot with thunderstorms today and instead it is hot WITHOUT thunderstorms. I appreciate the sunshine, but I do not appreciate having to water my yard, blech.
Here is where you can ask me anything from “why don’t you water your yard more?” to “what celebrity birthday is it this week?” Just keep swinging back here all week as you think of questions!
Now, question for you! This is actually a question from a friend who is trying to get his wife to watch a movie with him. She doesn’t like Amitabh, she doesn’t like SRK, she likes Irrfan Khan, and she liked the movie Mary Kom. What’s a good suggestion for her?
My first thought was Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, gorgeous film, no SRK or Amitabh, solid sports story. And then I remembered Paan Singh Tomar, which is PERFECT, Irrfan and well made and related sports story. What else can you think of? Doesn’t have to be sports, but I think that vibe of more narrative drive to it would be good.
My favorite Irrfan Khan spoof:

Do you have any idea why Shahrukh ‘s Television gigs never work?

What an interesting question!!! I think maybe because his onscreen persona is too big for TV and his private persona is too smart? Obviously he started in television, so at one point he could give TV level performances. But now, if he were to play a character in a TV serial, I can’t see it working. He’s too famous, too well known, too limited. He’d unfairly dominate any show he was on and TV needs to be an ensemble.
On the other hand, when he’s tried hosting gigs, I think he softens himself down to much. His interviews and guest spots and awards appearances and funny and edgy and a little sharp. But you can’t do that when you are hosting a game show or whatever, you have to smooth down your edges and appear more “every man”. I think he would do really well hosting a comedy show that lampoons society, for instance. If he was the host of something like the American The Daily Show or the British QI, I think he would be amazing. Or even an AIB sponsored Indian show. But again, he’s too Big to be offered that kind of gig. And probably too protective of his movie career to be willing to go that edgey.

From what I’ve heard and felt, Shahrukh is witty but wittiness cannot run a show. He is too big of a star to be hosting a show similar to the Kapil Sharma Show(which would be the medium he would shine the most). Additionally his witty humor and jokes appeal to only a certain demographic thus making him less accessible to the population. This persona works well when one is taking interviews but it does not give an audience connection to the host. Amitabh Bachchan has the aura of an older man who is wise but also connects with his guests yet still giving pearls of wisdom. While Salman connects completely with his audience through his jokes and easy going demeanor.

Why have not reviewed Laapata Ladies here? It is a wonderful movie. Ditto with Shaitaan

I can’t think of a single suggestion. I have mostly watched Irfan Khan’s comedies, drama’s, thrillers and romance. Some films may appeal such as Hindi Medium but they are too specific to Indian tastes. Somehow the only thing that’s coming to my mind is Aaja Nachle – it is kind of a sports film?
Have you watched Bridgerton? I watched Season 1 but disliked it due to the male lead. Season 2 clips kept coming on my feed but my dislike for season 1 stopped me from watching it. Season 3 seems to have less of an impact than the previous seasons and the spin off.

I hope so! She’s been so vocal about wanting to be a Mom over the years, I want that for her too.
