Is it still Friendship Day in India? Am I getting in just under the wire or did I miss it? Oh well, either way I want to do a quick post on it with a few of my favorite songs about friendship. (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)

And Friendship Day in India is first Sunday of August. I don’t know why. It used to be a greeting cards and friendship bands and gifts kind of holiday. K2H2 shows it totally accurately.

Oh duh! Of course! Although I go back and forth as to whether “Yaari Hai Iman” belongs on Friendship Day or Pride Day.

I think the reference with most guy BFF duo songs and concepts in indian entertainment is that it ties up with the Krishna-Sudama legend. Viewing it through a sexual lens feels foreign. And foreign influenced. Plus, we see the near-sibling or better than siblings kind of platonic bromance between men all over the region in real life too so the ‘are they more than friends?’ question never really arises organically. A case for it can always be made but it would be a forced interpretation of what’s not organic for the culture. And we do have the possibly gay relationship depicted in the friend, philosopher, guide side hero character already wherever it’s needed. I know guys who actually share underwear and sleep hugging each other and they’re still not gay. It’s a weird and wonderfully accepting culture. Even the ‘gay is bad’ notion was introduced to us by the west. Gay sex used to be called Nawabi Shauk (indulgences of nawabs) and was discussed without homophobia right up to the turn of the century in this country.

Well said Asmita. I lived for ten years in “foreign’ and that gay culture was really foreign to me. In our college days in India we guys had so much close friendships without an iota of sexual orientation in it. But in USA and Canada whenever I tried to be friends with a guy, he tends to make sexual advances. I was so sick of them but I also feel pity for them.

I have plenty of secretly and not so secretly gay friends so I’m not opposed to or offended by it. As a culture, I pity us all. Gay, straight, undecided, none of us have the right to love anyone of our choice or to marry them. But yes, our men are thankfully comfortable with touching other males without it having a sexual tone.
