Happy Birthday Kumar Sanu!!!! 17 Reasons I Love You

Happy Birthday Kumar Sanu!  Last year I went with 16 reasons, this year I think I will add one more and go for 17.  You have done so many great songs, I could probably make it all the way to 20, but we will start with 17 (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)

1.1. I love you because you are an old school musician, trained from childhood by your father, a fellow musician, doing it for the love of the art while working in other careers.

2. I love you because you weren’t an overnight success, working in Bengali films for years before finally getting a chance to come to Bombay and risk it all at age 33.

3. I love you because, once you arrived in Bombay, you were a hit almost over night, Aashiqui coming out shortly after you arrived and becoming a record breaking album.

4.  I love you because you opened a school for underprivileged children in Delhi, providing the students with free uniforms and books.

5.  I love you because you sang a song and did a fabulous cameo in Dum Laga Ke Hasha.

6. I love you because, as is constantly repeated in every article about you, you have the world record for songs recorded in one day, 28.

7.  I love you because this is one of those songs that starts playing in my head as soon as I see the title of the film.  And I still haven’t even seen the movie!

8. I love you because you were one of Shahrukh’s first voices.

9.  I love you because you properly delivered RD Burman‘s last songs.

10.  I love you because you showed up for one small part of one song in Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

11.  Haven’t seen this movie yet either, but the song is so pretty!

12.  On the other hand, I am on record as loving this movie!

13.  I have seen this movie many many times, and really the whole thing only works thanks to the amazing way your voice sells this song.

14.  This one, this one is just so so pretty.  I could (and have) listened to it on repeat for hours.

15.  I love you for volunteering to take part as one of many many voices in this tribute to film history.

16.  After ruling the 90s into the early 2000s, you took a break for a few years, before coming back in a big way with this amazing song for a film that was, in many ways, a tribute to your career.

17.  And finally, I love you for this, forever and ever.

  1. well you got a few things wrong about Sanu.Singers who sang the original track must also sing the rehashed version. You didn’t metion this about him. If you really respect him then please give due attention.
Looks looks some one doesn’t know anything about Indian music culture/industry but won’t stop stop giving their misplaced comment.
    Thank you

  2. Oh I see, school is now is session, what with all the emphasis on facts and respect. Today’s life lesson –
    K. Sanu is unique in Hindi filmlore, in the sense that he holds the longest streak of consecutive Filmfare awards. He did this as a male vocalist at five-in-a-row (K. Kumar for singing performance by a male vocalist and A.R. Rehman for music direction each managed to earn four-in-a-row, the “runner-up” on this measure; K. Kumar’s streak ended when Filmfare paused giving out awards). K. Sanu’s streak was, per Wikipedia, 1990’s Ab Tere Bin; 1991’s Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai, 1992’s Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar; 1993’s Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen, and 1994’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha.
Jacob (and any other like-minded person), has my best wishes to go ahead and fact-check the following claim – that no other artiste in any medium anywhere in the world has that kind of streak for winning the award that is considered the standard-bearer of national quality – while the rest of us can “cut school” and demonstrate our respect for K. Sanu by enjoying how his work is now being part of our happy collective sub-conscience, e.g. the cassette tape passed to N. Kaur’s character from an off-camera aunty in The Lunchbox that contained his second winning performance.
Thank you, Ms. Redlich, for your passion-infused work.
Regards, from the middle of an not exactly seasonal heatwave, to rest of this community as well.
