Getting this out of the way right at the beginning, I am not a fan of Anushka’s lehenga. It’s just kind of boring, and the waistband is weird. But the other clothes are worth looking at!
(most photos courtesy of NDTV)
See? There’s that belt thing, and the scarf isn’t fully on her shoulders and doesn’t seem like it belongs, plus it all makes her look a little like she is slouching somehow. I do like the hair, worn down but a little styled, that’s neat. And Virat looks good, can’t go wrong with a traditional look. Although I don’t know about the shoes, brown leather somehow doesn’t look right there.
Here’s a better shot of the full dress without the husband in the way.
Ranbir’s hair, meanwhile, disaster! Did he just pull his hat off or something? Anyway, the rest of the photo is cute, including his suit. It’s a good look on him.
Also cute, the Shahrukh photo! Although he looks very short squashed in between them.
Aish looked gorgeous, white is very good on her. Although I have that little Western voice in my head saying “tacky to wear white to a wedding!” Anyway, nice outfit. Interesting that most of the men opted for suits rather than traditional wear, while the women went traditional. Oh, and notice how Aish’s scarf is casually drapped but really feels like part of the outfit.
Shweta looks okay too, only I don’t like her blouse. It’s just spikey and odd looking. The sari is nice, just the blouse that bothers me. Oh, and super sweet that she and Amitabh are holding hands.
Huh, Priyanka came! It seems like she’s been doing a lot of little appearances, right? I’m not imagining that? If the rumors I have heard that her American show might be canceled, probably good to start ramping up the Indian appearances slowly, reminding us who she is. Oh, and her sari doesn’t seem to be draped right somehow, but maybe that’s how that style is supposed to be worn.
Oh good heavens, Kat!!!! What are you WEARING?!?!?! This is just a world of “no”. I can’t decide if it would be better with a regular skirt and the same top, or a regular top and the same skirt.
Kangana, also, not looking her best. The sleeves are weirdly long, and the sari is strangely baggy. Maybe it is a purposeful style look, but if so, it does not work for me.
From the younger generation, Sara and Ibrahim came. I know Sara is the one being launched, but my goodness Ibrahim has a striking face. In a way that kind of reminds me of his grandfather. Oh! That should be his launch film! A biopic of the early years of Tiger, the recovery from the eye injury to become India’s Cricket Captain, that part.
Lara Dutta, also not a great outfit. Just remove the vest, or else change it to something a little more plain, I think.
Okay, I think I can (tentatively) co-sign on both these outfits. Although I like Bhumi’s skirt better, but her blouse less.
AR Rahman came, that’s surprising! Doesn’t seem like he does a lot of these industry events. Maybe he is a Cricket fan? Oh, and his wife looks nice.
Also looking nice, Boman and his wife! I like the subtle plaid in his suit coat.
Sachin came, that’s exciting! And he looks very very handsome in a suit, I had no idea! I’d ding his daughter for her dress, but she looks like a teenager, and teenage girls have enough problems, they can wear whatever they want.
And Dhoni and his wife, who I only care about because I liked his biopic so much. His wife is wearing a gorgeous outfit, but is a little worried about tripping over her skirt (DHONI! Take her arm like a gentleman!!!!)
Oh, and one last photo, from the Delhi reception. They went a lot bigger in clothes there, and I definitely like Anushka’s outfit way way better. Very regal. And Virat is wearing silk pants, which is just the height of luxury. I kind of want silk pants! Think how comfy!
I think all the leading ladies of the previous generation Sridevi, Rekha and Madhuri looked stunning. The drape is usually referred as a shawl not a scarf.PC and Kat doesn’t look their best. And yes, young Ibrahim looks much like his famous grand father Pataudi here. As for the biopic, there’s a rumor that the accident was ‘deliberate’ though Pataudi never supported that theory.

Shoot, I didn’t find photos of the older generation arriving.
I am beginning to think that saris are something you really need a certain age to wear well. Like, you can’t carry it off until you are at least 35.

I guess you missed the video of Shahrukh dancing with the newlyweds as well. The beauty of sari is that it flatters all body types and you can wear it at any age.You just need to adjust it accordingly – whether it should be tightly wrapped or loose, what the fabric is,what the print is,how it should be draped. For eg: in Rajneeti Kat wore her sari just like she did earlier in Singh is King. The director made her wear it in a different way -she calls it boxy.A female politician wouldn’t wear it the same way a Bollywood heroine would.

I think the key is that you have to wear it like you aren’t afraid of it. Some of the younger women, it feels like the sari is wearing them instead of them wearing the sari, you know? If I were a stylist type person, I would suggest that they put it on for a couple of hours in advance and just practice walking and being natural in it.

Anushka Sharma, from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Harry Met Sejal and Sultan and other films, is marrying Virat Kohli, captain of the national Cricket team of India. So a very big deal. Like Marilyn Monroe marrying Joe Dimaggio, sort of.

The fact that your “Marilyn Monroe marrying Joe Dimaggio” example makes complete sense to me kind of dates my popular culture context. (Joe was always such a gentleman . . . )

You just wrote everything I thought! I like only Anushka’s hair, and make-up, not the outfit I prefer much more the Delhi one, so elegant.
When I saw Aish and Bhumi I thought: oh no, white on the wedding 😉
The worst dress: Sara Ali Khan (I hate the colour)
The best: Sachin’s wife
Doesn’t Priyanka look like Rekha in this sari?
And why Jaya hasn’t come?

It’s silly to think “white on the wedding”, right? Because in India gold or red would be more common. But it still just seems wrong!
I think I liked Dhoni’s wife better than Sachin’s. But definitely the Cricket contingent looked better than the filmi one. Maybe because they weren’t trying as hard to be glamorous, they were just wearing really really nice traditional wedding kind of clothes. Rahman’s wife also had a gorgeous outfit.
I had the same thought about Priyanka’s sari! But maybe it is just the style, I think that is the same sort of gold sari with big antique jewelry style that Rekha always wears. And it’s like the correct way to wear that sari style.
I don’t mind the color of Sara’s outfit, but I still don’t like it. It reminds me of Kat’s, but less bad. I really really hope textured sari blouses aren’t the new thing, because I think it is a stupid look.
I assume Jaya was just feeling under the weather or something. It seemed like a kind of strenuous party, like you would be expected to stay a few hours at least and dance and chat and everything. If I were her, I might opt out too and stay home with a good book instead. It seems pretty common for stars to rotate escorts like that, Ajay went around with Tanisha sometimes when Kajol was pregnant, and I know Shweta has gone places with her father before, and Abhishek I think has taken his mother sometimes when Amitabh wasn’t up for it. And other times just Amitabh and Abhishek have gone to things, no women at all. Although it would be weird if Abhi and Aish went to this, and Amitabh went alone, makes more sense for him to bring Shweta. It’s another advantage of the combined family system, you can mix and match couples as needed!

But isn’t white a funeral colour in India? So not very good either. Like my grandma doesn’t like people who wear black on weddings in Poland.

I don’t like people who wear black at weddings! And it’s what everyone wears now here, at least for evening weddings, they all show up in their little black cocktail dresses and stuff, and I am sitting in a corner shaking my head and disapproving. I understand the idea, no one wants to buy a second non-black fancy dress just for a wedding, but it still just feels wrong to me!

I pretty much agree with all your fashion assessments. I think Priyanka who rarely goes wrong with fashion wore a sari to say, “don’t worry,India, I still belong to you.” Kangana’s sari is also a calculated, “see, I’m a good traditional girl.” As to the white it REALLY isn’t a thing in India. You can even wear a red sari to a wedding if you want to! I love the Ash looked. I think her’s was the best. ALL of Anushka’s wedding outfits including her airport looks were better than this one. Don’t know what happened. Shah Rukh looks short cause HE IS SHORT. We stood next his stature in Mme Toussauds and its shocking how short. He is such a huge presence, I guess.
Last note: I saw one pic of Suhana with her two cousins (Gauri’s brother’s kids) standing in front of those flowers. They were all wearing black leather jackets which seemed really inappropriate for the occasion.
Theories: 1) it was a pic from another occasion at the ST. Regis and those flowers are always there. 2) they just stopped by to wish the couple well and weren’t really staying, cause they weren’t really invited 3) they are teenagers and get your teen age girl (and boy) pass, “its hard enough to be a teen…”

Good point with Priyanka. It could also be a choice to try to ally herself with the other traditional sari wearers there, Sridevi and Madhuri and Rekha. As in “I am older and respectable and past these childish changing fashions.” A move towards being considered more of an “married” older woman.
I am leaning towards your theory 1 for Suhana being there. I can’t find any photos of her with Shahrukh for one thing, and I think he would have made sure to get his photo taken with her, in a “okay guys, here’s the photo you want, now leave her alone” kind of way.
Oh, and I have found the one Anushka outfit from the wedding time that is worse. I think it is their arrival at the venue, and I can see the practicality of comfortable clothes while wearing make-up and hair for the fancy event, but still, NO!

Actually the Bangles that she’s wearing are called “chooda” which every Punjabi bride wears after marriage for a certain period of time. So she’s had them on for at least 10 days probably.

I didn’t mind their arriving at the venue in jeans. She had not yet done makeup cause we have pics of her doing it. I think thats exactly what a regular person would do! I agree with your notion that Priyanka is aligning herself with the older “married” group specifically Rekhaji who while not publicallly married, actdually probaby is married to the women who is always behind her in a black suit.

I don’t mind the jeans, I just don’t like the jumpsuit look! Jeans and a t-shirt, I wouldn’t have minded.
What’s really funny is the way Priyanka is running towards the “married” look while Aish and Kat are running away from it. Aish is already married, but is avoiding the full sari look, and Kat is the same age as Priyanka, but dressing about ten years younger, while Priyanka is dressing ten years older.

I cant quite figure Priyanka out. She is making the rounds on Indian TV and being interviewed everywhere about how much she misses India etc. , how she’d like to get married and have a “cricket team” worth of kids..(which of course can’t be true cause she’d have to have started unless she goes the Shumita Sen, Angelina route and adopts. But she seems to have the agenda of getting back into the Indian public eye while touting her American successes. It feels a bit unseemly. Of course she never should have done that “dirty laundry show” and made the fuss with the brown leather jacket…that got her cut out of any home of doing Don 3. I dislike Kangana for her shenanigans but I admire Priyanka cause she has done so much and on her own. But there is something squirrly there that bothers me.

the “cricket team” of kids comment is really odd. I am sure she could want a large family, but it does seem like if that is what she really wanted, she wouldn’t have pursued her career to this point. I guess what I am getting at is the expectation that the public would believe that comment despite all evidence to the contrary just because it is what women are supposed to say, and that Priyanka would feel the need to say it despite all evidence to the contrary because she knows it is what she is supposed to say.
It feels like, based on her career tragectory and persona up to know, the Rekha/Sush route would make more sense. That is, to just position herself as kind of beyond marriage.

These pictures are so disappointing. We see much better clothes at reception IRL or even friends’ instagram feeds.
Priyanka’s seems to have forgotten safety pins exist. That’s a beautiful sari and she’s killing it dead! 😡
Not a fan of what the Bachchan ladies wore. Too plain for a wedding reception. And that too for a winter reception! I seriously hate people wearing summer colors for winter wedding events! We’re not exactly short of color palettes and there’s no excuse for people going lazy with it.
Lara probably had the right idea and that dress probably looked better in person. A lot of these outfits probably looked better in person.
As for Anushka, she looks like a teen at her college fresher’s. From OTT mature at the Delhi reception to this!! Yikes! Also, she’s hunching over so much. That’s what happens when your dupatta covers nothing and your blouse is too skimpy!!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes! That is what that posture is! The “I am uncomfortable wearing a top this skimpy so I am constantly trying to hide myself” posture! Seen on college campuses everywhere.
And for the extra special outfits in winter colors, can we have a shout out for Aditi? How am I the only one that is in love with her outfit?
