Veere Di Wedding Trailer! My Hopes and Dreams for the Plot Based on the Plotless Trailer

You’ve all probably already said everything you have to say, but if you feel like repeating it all over again, here is this space!  Because I finally got around to watching the trailer, and now I can talk about it.

The thing about this trailer is, it’s probably not a perfect reflection of the film’s plot.  Which is fine, not every trailer has to be.  Most often they are something like Noori or Gold or Raid, which gives you the outline of the plot and a few clever lines, and some fancy cutting to make it interesting.  But this trailer is definitely NOT that, which is okay, but also means the film itself still has quite a few question marks.

For this trailer, they seem to have gone for “let’s put in the raunchiest funniest moments, and a little bit of what this ‘wedding’ from the title is about, but leave everything else out”.  Which is okay!  It tells us that this will be a movie with real adult woman who make raunchy comments and tell jokes, framed around a wedding, and if you are into that, you should watch it.  And all the other details you can find out later.

My guess for this film is that it will be framed by Kareena’s wedding, and the stress of going from being a carefree single woman with a loving boyfriend, to a prospective bride and daughter-in-law and all that comes with it.  I especially loved the little moment when Kareena is asked to give the ring back so he can give it to her again at the formal engagement.  Such a clear reminder that the original decision to marry was private and just between the two of them, but they have to give that away now, everything belongs to the family.

There is one line from Sonam’s Mom that runs down the rest of the friend group, a wife who eloped, a divorced woman, and Sonam who is single.  From the very little we get in the trailer about them, I am guessing that Swara will be happy with her marriage but also frustrated at being trapped in the life of a wife, Sonam will be dreaming of true love but not sure how or where to find it, and Shikha Talsania will be the raunchy funny one.  The happy ending will be Swara giving her husband an ultimatum and learning to be happier in her marriage, Sonam will either realize the right guy has been there all along and she was just too blind to see it or meet the right guy at the very end Dear Zindagi style, and Shikha will have a few moments of honesty and depth that will ring all the more true for how funny she is the rest of the time ,but ultimately decide she is happy with the way her life is.

The other line that really stood out for me is Kareena saying something about how she isn’t the first woman to get married like this but she is the first woman to get married without her friends.  So I am hoping that the romances and the wedding and everything else are just there to add stress to the central relationship which is between the 4 women.  So the happy ending is less about Kareena’s wedding and Sonam’s romantic travails and so on and so on, and more about the 4 women breaking up as friends before coming back together again stronger than ever.

At least, that’s what I hope!  If it is just what we see in the trailer, wedding jokes and sexual humor, then bleh!!!!  But I can’t imagine that is all there is, there were enough clues dropped in to indicate that there is something more here, something about male-female relationships and the importance of female friendships.

Oh, and in the comments already there has been a lot of talk about “it’s Bridesmaids!” mostly in a good way.  And I agree with that!  Bridesmaids was promoted the same way, the trailer focusing on “they’re woman, but they also make crass jokes and do body humor!”  But then if you watch the movie, it is really about female friendship, and life not working out the way you think it will, and all kinds of lovely stuff.  Mixed in with crass humor.

  1. I think Swara is the divorced one, and Shikha Talsania is the one who eloped and has kids now.

I was little worried when I read the comments yesterday, but I loved this trailer. I think I will broke my “No Kareena Kapoor movies” rule and watch this.
Btw Am I the only one who thinks Sonam is like the worst actress ever? She is so bland when compared with other 3 actresses who are great.

    • I would say Sonam is an extremely limited actress. But, at least for the past few years, is also super savvy at finding roles that can work within those limitations. So if this is as perfect a role as Neerja or Khoobsurat was for her, then it’s fine.

So long as you are breaking “no Kareena” rules, you should also check out Omkara and Jab We Met. And Hulchul! My favorite.

      • I watched Jab We Met years ago, I even own polish dvd with this film, and I love it. Oh and I have and watched Chameli in polish too. It was later when I decided I don’t like her and won’t watch her movies. But now Talaash is there on Prime and I see it everytime I scroll in search of movies, so sooner or later I will watch it.

        • Talaash is amazing, even if you don’t watch it for Kareena, you should watch it for Rani.

          • You should check out Omkara sometime, Kareena is amazing in that, and again her sort of fragile brittleness works well, in a completely different way. If you haven’t run across Omkara before, it’s an Othello remake with Kareena playing Desdemona.

    • I had the same bias against Kareena for a long time and avoided a lot of her films or dreaded them. But she does have moments of greatness or at least genuine likeability or relatability in Omkara, Jab We Met, Chameli, Talaash, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, and Udta Punjab (all worth watching).

Sonam is the same kind of actor where it’s hard for her to break past her glamorous persona but when she does there are also really good moments like in Neerja or Khoobsurat, two of her best performances. I also think her debut performances in Saawariya and Delhi-6 are some of her best but many would disagree.

  2. It really does tell you all you need to know to figure out if the movie is for you or not. Though the #notachickflick thing is silly, because that’s what it is. It’s like the studio is extra concerned that they are going to alienate male viewers since they will also be alienating some with the swearing (this isn’t a family film and it shouldn’t have to be!). I just hope it does well because it will then lead to more of the same genre.

    • Yes! It doesn’t tell you any real details about the plot, or who these characters are, or who any other characters are, but it tells you that it will be about female friendship and swearing and making fun of social norms. And if you like that, then you should show up and watch it. And if any of that turns you off, you can stay away.

  3. I liked the trailer & am even ok with them not giving us a hint of the real plot. It was so good to see women on screen who are central characters and are not just love interests who are important etc. They seemed like normal girls I have met. (Yes normal girls cuss not everybody is sweet and coy) Also, the story is about the friendship between these women which really sounds appealing. I don’t want this movie to be judged harshly because it has women and not men cos god knows we’ve had a tonne of Buddy movies for men before a few got it right.

    • Excellent point, it may not be a perfect movie, but it is the first mainstream film of this genre, so we can give them some time to get it right.

    • Absolutely! And I really really hope it has good songs. That’s the one thing that I think would let me enjoy these kinds of movies more, if you could take a break from all the farce and embarrassments and slapstick humor for a really really good song sequence.

      • So true! A lot is riding on the songs for this one. So many good opportunities to have fun with them. I’m really hoping that song picturizations are not becoming a thing of the past. Bareilly Ki Barfi had such truncated songs that they felt like lost opportunities. I’d be happy if VDW has one good party dance where all four are dancing together (end credits?) and a really good montage all about friendship. But I’m really hoping there’s even more than that.

  4. Kareena has an amazing screen presence, even if she doesn’t have too many dialogues you end up looking at her. I was pleasantly surprised that Shikha Talsania had so many lines in the trailer, liked her the most!!. And Sonam was very disappointing -someone more talented would’ve gone to town with the lines she had. She sounds exactly the same in Aisha, Khoobsurat and this. Somehow was a little let down by Sumeet Vyas too, maybe there wasn’t much of him in the trailer but he and Kareena looked a bit mismatched.
I also think they included all the raunchy bits and f- bombs to shock people – the movie will be much tamer I think.

    • I have a slight hope that Sonam’s character/performance will end up much deeper, mostly because she seems to be playing the “straightwoman” kind of friend. So, the hardest to highlight in a trailer filled with one-liners. If we use the obvious Sex and the City comparison, she is Charlotte, and Charlotte was an amazing character with an amazing actress playing her, but she never came off well in the promos because she didn’t have as many good lines.

I’m thinking the movie will be tamer too, that they included every good over the top line in the trailer, and in the film they will be spaced out around normal dialogue.

  5. My hope is that Shikha will have a role that isn’t Fat Friend. Maybe they won’t mention her body type at all, or maybe that’s too much to ask

    Like

    • I’d love if the body type was handled as just part of her overall look. It appears that Sonam and Kareena have a slightly more high fashion put together vibe, and Shikha is a little more out there. And she isn’t really that far off from Swara’s size (I think). Or even Kareena, now that Kareena is out of her super skinny phase.

  6. Not my kind of a movie.Sex and the city,Bridesmaids all these comparisons make me want to stay far far away. Not even decent man candy to balance all the estrogen in the room. This is where a John Abraham or Akshay cameo at the end would do good. The trailer gave me the impression that Kareena is pregnant and hence the quickie wedding.

    • This is another sign that the trailer did its job! They could have edited it to make the movie seem totally different, I am sure there are romantic moments they could pick up somewhere in the film, and warm family moments, and so on. But then people would come in and go “blech! This isn’t what I was expecting at all!” Far better to accurately reflect the film and warn off the folks who just won’t like it, than to try to sell it to everybody and end up with unhappy audiences.

  7. Watching this trailer close at the heels of the Sanju trailer was not a good idea.

I think with a title like Veere di Wedding and knowing the cast, I was really expecting the plot to be framed around, well, a veere di wedding (brother’s wedding).

Sikha, I had to really strain my memory to remember who she was and swara looks like she is probably wayyy underused in this film.

Kareena is doing the Kajol thing where she’s sticking to the same expression profile as she’s always had and it looks annoying as fuck. You can see her “acting” and it’s so yuck. Ditto with Sonam.

If they were going for a Mallika Dua/Girliyapa style confident peppiness, they should have just hired those girls to write and act in this film.

  8. This and Hichki are the only films so far this year that I actually want to watch. I was thinking to watch Pari but I don’t think I have the stomach for it. There’s nothing wrong with chick-flicks, they just strike a point in a different way.
Also, can not wait to see Kareena back on the screen. Love her or hate her, you can’t deny her presence.

      • I haven’t heard of Noori. :/ I think perhaps with the rise of more educated women, there is a place in cinema for stories with female leads without the need for a leading hero. 🙂
Also, I saw your previous post on not using white privilege to benefit and I just have to say that I have huuuuge respect for you.
