News Update: Salman on PC, and Shahid Does Prabhudeva

This is it, right?  This has got to be the end of the Priyanka Chopra story, since PC refuses to give a statement herself, that means Salman’s version becomes definitive and now we are done?  Please please say we are done!  Oh, and if you don’t care about PC, it is possible this other news story will get you very excited (angry maybe?).

More Priyanka Quotes, From Her and About Her

First, Priyanka appeared on a panel about breaking boundaries and some such sponsored by the FICCI Ladies Organization (FICCI being a film industry group that focuses on conferences and big ideas about moving forward, very respectable) and YES Bank.  And she gave a quote that is being reprinted everywhere:

My personal life is not for public consumption. 90 per cent of my life is for public consumption but 10 per cent is for me. I am a girl and I have the right to keep that to myself. My family, friendship, my relationships are things I don’t think I need to defend or explain it to anyone. I am not running for the Office, so I don’t think I need to give explanations.

This is the day after she attended Nick Jonas’ concert in Singapore, and took off a ring and put it in her pocket at the airport (captured by paparazzi) when arriving back in India.

Image result for priyanka chopra ring

And I know, again, this makes me sound crazy.  But if you really think your personal life is none of our business, maybe simply announce your engagement instead of playing it coy?  Or maybe DON’T publicly go to your boyfriend’s concert?  Or, perhaps, take your ring off at any other point before you see the photographers instead of making sure they catch it happening?

What’s really irritating is that Priyanka leaving Bharat is a big story, a legitimate story about the Indian film industry.  And now if you ask her about it, or talk about it, it sounds like you are being mean and prying into her personal life.  I don’t care about Priyanka’s personal life!  She can have that “10%” if she wants it.  I just want to know why she left the biggest movie she has had in years, that’s a professional question and it should be legitimate for me to ask it.

Oh, and then at the Loveratri trailer launch, Salman had to answer it.  He didn’t have a nice cover of “no no, it’s personal, let me hide my face in modesty and sharam”, he had to actually respond to the question like professional grown up people do.

I am really happy for her. Uss waqt hum ko ye pata chalta ke unhone wahan par koi bahut badi film sign ki hai aur hume thoda pehla pata chalta to hum waise bhi usko kabhi rokte nahi (If we had known then that she has signed a big Hollywood film, we wouldn’t have stopped her from leaving our film anyway). End moment pe pata chala, shooting ke 10 din pehle pata chala. Shooting shuru ho gayi thi meri, par unke schedule se 10 din pehle pata chala ki woh picture chhodna chahti hai. (We got to know at the end moment, 10 days before her shooting that she wants to leave the film). We said of course, if you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. Uss waqt kuchh alag reason diye gaye the hume (We were given another reason then..). Jo bhi reason hai, shaadi ka reason ho, ya picture ka reason ho, ya unko India main nahi kaam karna, ya mere saath nahi kaam karna, sirf Hollywood film aur TV show karna hai, woh unka reason hai. (Whatever it is, her wedding, Hollywood film or the fact that she does not want to work with me, it’s her reason.) We are really happy and supportive about her doing good work.”

Am I crazy, or did BH translate that wrong?  Pretty sure he didn’t say “Hollywood” film, he just said “big film”, which has a different implication.  And definitely sure he said something about her maybe not wanting the movie because she doesn’t want to work in India any more, which was completely not translated.

But overall, with my limited Hindi, I am getting the gist that he said it would be nice to have known sooner, it would be nice not to have been lied to, but she could certainly leave if she wants to leave.  Which is also how I feel about it, me and Salman, as one mind.  It’s not that she is leaving the picture, who cares.  It’s that she lied about it and left last minute.  That’s scuzzy, and that’s not about whether or not she wanted the role, or wanted to work with Salman, or anything else.  It’s basic professionalism, when you quit a job you give a reasonable amount of notice and you give a legitimate reason why.

Shahid and Yo Yo Do Urvashi

Now, ready to get angry for a completely different reason?  T-Series is rewriting “Urvashi” with Yo Yo Honey Singh, and Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani are going to be in the music video.  Meaning they are disrespecting both AR Rahman and Prabhudeva.  Oh, and also I guess Tamil films in general since they are taking a Tamil hit and Hindi-izing it.

Now, go get mad at that!  It will be a nice change from PC news.

  1. No to Yo Yo Singh doing Urvashi! I don’t like this idea at all. But I guess, if they are doing it, they had the rights from whoever own them.

    • It’s T-Series, so they may have had the rights all along, I wouldn’t be surprised if they released the original Humse Hai Muqabla album. But I don’t like this, them taking all their classics and remixing!

Although, I know I will listen to it anyway and probably enjoy it because I have low taste like that. But morally it feels wrong.

  2. I’m thrilled about your clear and in my mind very accurate analysis of PC. This “I’m a girl” crap urks me. NO. If you are the staunch feminist you say you are and you should be you do not fall back on “Oh, I’m just a girl.” Does she think she is Julia Roberts in Nottinghill? In my mind, however, she has displayed her priorities and who she is willing to throw under the bus and for what (anything Hollywood). The movie she is doing sound terrible. At first I thought, oh good, another “camp” that won’t hire her. But its better than that; she has shown ALL of Indian film who she is and what she’ll do.

    • Unfortunately, the idea of Hollywood sells in India. Not actual Hollywood which nobody is really interested in but the idea of it. Aishwarya had poor relationships with half the industry but was able to make a fine comeback just because she did silly B-grade movies outside India and was now considered an international star by the Indian film industry.

It is this same thing that is keeping Priyanka afloat. There is honestly no reason why she should have gotten Bharat in the first place. If an actress had not done lead roles in years and had been relegated to a boring/low-rated TV show for a long time, she would never be able to get such a movie, especially since she too has/had poor relationships with half the industry. It was this HW stardust that even a big star like Salman fell for when it was unnecessary and really does not affect Bharat’s fate at all.

If she can keep her PR churning with her fake relationships and show up on HW red carpets every so often wearing designer dresses, there will always be some BW directors/producers who would be willing to work with her. Regardless of whatever she’s done and how many people she’s pissed off, she will always have a cushion because of this.

      • Yeah, that’s what I was getting at with the BH translation. They inserted “Hollywood” while Salman just said “there” versus “here”. Salman made it a matter of “she chose someone else over us, and that’s okay”. BH skated past that shading and turned it into “she’s a Hollywood star”.

        • Well Salman did say towards the end that she is making India proud by working in Hollywood or something like that. I’m not sure if he was genuinely being complementary or it was sarcasm. I think they want to try to stay gracious because looking petty won’t make them look good either.

          • I think he might actually be gracious. Salman seems very quick to forgive. He may still be a little irritable about the way it all happened, but I could believe he also genuinely wishes her well.

    • I’m a bad analyst, I hadn’t even noticed that she explicitly says “I’m a girl” in the middle of that statement. You’re not a girl! You’re a woman! An adult person who should be able to handle your job as a public person.

Especially because simply framing it as “I’m a woman” makes it a feminist statement, that she is unfairly being focused on because she is a woman. While “I’m a girl” makes it a statement of “I am so weak and fragile, take pity on me”.

  3. Songs get remade. If they do a bad job they will get dragged the way the Race 3 people did over Ek Do Teen. This is yet another occasion though for me to comment on how Prabhudeva brilliantly uses the built environment in his dancing and choreography in a way that no one else does. I don’t have the training or language to discuss this well but it reminds me of the famous Fred Astaire dance with a coat rack only on a much bigger scale.

I’m going from indifferent to Priyanka to actively disliking her. She seems like one of those people who likes to stir up chaos and then take advantage as everyone else is scrambling and reacting. I respect how Salman handled it, his statement was straightforward, honest and gracious. He’s such an interesting and complicated person. He’s done a lot of terrible things and yet in moments like this I also understand why he has so much loyalty both within the industry and from his fans.

    • Or the newspaper dance from Summer Stock with Gene Kelly. Which is worth watching (or rewatching) if you haven’t seen it lately.

I wouldn’t be surprised if, within the industry, PC dropping out of Bharat gets her in bad books partly because she was doing it to a Salman film. Not because people are afraid of him, but because he is so gracious and generous and loyal. Like he says, she could have dropped out at any time for any reason, she didn’t have to do it this way, but he doesn’t hold it against her. It’s not a situation where she needed to lie or do anything complicated, there was nothing holding her there and everyone would know that. So, why like this?

      Like

      • She was probably afraid they wouldn’t let her go. Remember Deepika also tried to leave Race 2 a few years ago. She wanted to do a Fast and Furious movie. But instead, they threatened to sue her and she had to stay and do Race. Once a contract is already signed, there’s no guarantee the other side will be willing to dissolve it just because the actress wants to run off to do another movie.

Priyanka was friends with Arpita and the director and used emotional reasons to get out. Who would begrudge someone falling in love and wanting time off to plan her wedding? It’s not something friends would be able to deny her. It worked out perfectly with the relationship PR she was doing anyway.

Once they let her out, she was free to announce her new movie and the Bharat team realized they had been had. And like I said, her HW stardust will save her. Farhan Aktar and Siddharth Roy Kapur was still showing off that she’s doing their movie while all this Bharat drama was going on. Nobody is really bothered about anyone else in BW. In that case, even Salman should have stayed away from her after all she’s done to SRK in the media but he didn’t.

        Like

        • That’s where I am thinking doing this with a Salman movie might backfire. Another producer and another star, maybe she would have been held to the contracts. But an SKF production, it’s all loosy-goosy and pleasant, she could have made a personal plea simply because she wanted to do another movie instead and he would have let her go with his blessing. No reason to invent the engagement story just to save herself from an abusive contract and producer, Salman doesn’t work like that.

    • I think this might be the person that the Prakash Raj character in Iruvar was based on? Which gives me a very tenuous sense for who he is.

Generally speaking, Tamil politics and Tamil film weave in and out and are one and the same. I believe he was primarily a leader in the political movements, although he was also a scriptwriter. Tamil Nadu is a strongly independent state and many of their battles have been fought over language, and their right to maintain their independent Tamil language. Karunanidhi was an early fighter in that battle, lead movements and participated in protests where people were killed by police. He was also a leader in the DMK party, founded partly over this language issue.

The DMK party was founded first, but then there was a split and a new party, the AIADMK party lead by megastar MGR, formed and came to power. After MGR died, his friend/political partner/acting partner Jayalalithaa took the lead and the two parties, AIADMK and DMK fought for power for years. Jayalalithaa died a few years back leaving a power vacuum in the AIADMK, and now I am guessing Karunanidhi will leave a vacuum in the DMK? And thus both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have now announced they are joining politics.

If you want a better sense of things, even if the details aren’t right, you should watch Iruvar. It’s a great movie just as a movie, and it gives a good sense for how film and politics go together.

    • In the second quote, when he is giving her reasons to leave, does he say something about her maybe not wanting to work in India any more?

      Like

      • He says “whatever her reason, whether it’s a wedding or another movie or that she doesn’t want to work in India or work with me or only want to do HW films and TV shows, it’s her reason.” He implies in the beginning that she lied about the reason she wanted to leave the movie – wedding. Then they found out she had signed another film but that was not the reason she had given them. If she had told them the truth, they would have still let her go. He had already started shooting and they found out 10 days before her own schedule that she wanted to leave the movie.

It was unprofessional to leave in this way but it was also unethical because she lied about it thinking she could trick them and get out. I don’t expect any better from her so this is par for the course where she is concerned. She also threw her supposed friendship with Arpita Khan under the bus for this. Normally she wishes everyone publicly on their birthday but she ignored Arpita this year – her birthday was a few days ago. Earlier she had even promoted her husband’s movie Loveratri.

        • Yeah, that’s closer to what I thought it was. BH kind of smoothed off the rough edges, took out the “only wants to do Hollywood” and the “doesn’t want to work in India” implication. Salman’s statement, which seems pretty straight-forward, is just saying what is obvious from her behavior, she wanted to get out of the movie because she wanted to work in America more than in India. And she didn’t give them much notice, and she gave them the wedding reason instead of the truth.

It’s also blowing up the idea that PC has never confirmed the engagement story or whatever. Salman’s straight up saying “no, this is the reason she gave us”. I wonder if PC thought they wouldn’t go public?
Thought she could tell them it was an engagement and then get away with keeping that lie secret? Didn’t realize that Zafar and Salman would just assume it was the truth and nothing to hide if she told them, didn’t occur to them that she had some kind of elaborate publicity campaign around it instead of just wanting to get married.

          • Priyanka gets off on the speculation. That has always been her strategy. This time just ramped up by 10x. Nothing explains her behavior other than wanting to snatch as much attention as possible. They released the news themselves to People Magazine along with lots of annoying stories about closing down Tiffanys to buy a ring, etc. She informs paps before arriving anywhere to make sure they get her pictures. Indian paps post about it on their instagram pretty much telling people her upcoming schedule, when she is going to have a party, when she is bringing Nick to India and so on. Then when she know they are there, she will deliberately take off her ring and hide it knowing it’s getting captured on camera.

When asked about it in person, then comes a feminism spiel and how she doesn’t have to answer any questions or provide any clarity so that the speculations can continue. A lot of it would come to a screeching halt if she confirmed or denied it herself but that’s not what she wants. The more spectacle she can create, the better.

            Like

          • Yeah, we even have the Abhishek example, similarly spectacular leaving of a film, maybe even more spectacular. And whatever his reason was, he didn’t want to make it public.

But instead of saying over and over again “I have a reason but I’m not making it public”, he just kind of let the story die and tried to move on. You can just not address it at all and still let it die a little bit instead of this add addressing-but-not-addressing method.

Extra letters usually just mean masala but I also worry that this was in the works for a long time and that’s not good. I really hate to say that Preity’s plastic surgery derailed her career, but there is a timeline correlation. Doing that short-lived talk show was also a weird move. Plus she did take some “time off” to do the Harvard Business school class and the cricket stuff. The Paris Ishq film was so bad and a waste of the legendary Isabelle Adjani.

Not as punishment, but just because she has proven unreliable and might ditch them last minute, or derail the promotions with her personal issues. It was never going to be a big expensive risky movie for them anyway, so they can afford to keep her on through filming and do a soft small promotion and then forget it.

He’s already got two major productions in the works with Kalank and Brahamastra and some other interesting things in the Dharma lineup, so this will probably take forever to release.

A Mughal dynasty set period piece with Ranveer and Kareena as siblings and Alia opposite Ranveer…still more leads to be cast. Jodhaa Akhbar meets Bajirao Mastani with a K3G flair. I am so in! KJo’s affinity for rich people with problems is the best match for that kind of film.

    Like

    • Sure! I think I put in a quick thing buried in some other post, maybe last Wednesday. But I am happy to share again.

I think her photos and interview were very appropriate for an 18 year old, nothing too mature or not mature enough. And if she is serious about being an actress (which it sounds like she is), this was a very safe way for her parents to help her get started. Not so much giving her an advantage, but more protecting her from the danger she is already in. She is a semi-celebrity, and the focus will just get stronger and stronger in the next few years as she pursues an acting career and grows up. This way they made sure she got her first interview over with in a place where they could supervise and with people they trusted. And now she’s done it once and people should leave her alone for a while as she continues to grow up, and if/when she comes back for another interview in a few years, she will know what to expect.

I suppose you could say the magazine cover gives her a slight advantage, but it’s just a Vogue magazine cover, they aren’t a film magazine or anything, and she isn’t promoting a film or anything else about her career, it’s just a nice interview with a public figure that people are curious about, no real extra advantage beyond what she already had just from the fame of her parents.

And it kind of confirms that PC just doesn’t have the power in America that she does in India. Her leaving Bharat is a big story because she is a top tier star in India, and because Indian casting announcements are set in stone once they are made (rumors are a different story, but once the cast is announced, you wouldn’t go back on it). But in Hollywood, PC is replaceable as needed and casting/filming announcements can be changed on a studio executives whim.

Kind of funny, the same thing happened to her that she did to Bharat. She went in good faith thinking it was confirmed because her casting was announced, and then had the rug pulled out from under her.

  11. After this I actually think she will marry nick or at least move in with him to keep the recent publicity attention alive.
On another note I saw the full interview which you quoted in this article and there’s something else she said after being asked what are the decisions she made which she has been judged for. And PC instantly got nervous and said her movie choices and some other safe answer. But she didn’t let the question pass without sneaking in a side remark for SRK. She said I could say a lot but that would involve other people and it would cause a storm. While looking for her mother in the audience…she seems to be passive aggressively threatening him since a while even with this jacket and her interviews. It’s as if she’s saying, I can blow up your entire life in a second.
By the way I don’t think you’re any kind of crazy… I was actually wondering why the public doesn’t seem to catch on her entire change of image plan and over aggressive insensitive pr.
Also as I don’t live in the US I wonder is she really that celebrated and wanted there as she makes it out to be? Because her acting talent is average for hw standards and even for Bollywood their are vidya, radhika, kangana and bhumi… All significantly better, acting wise. Or is it because of her ‘exotic looks’ literally but then there is a Eva Longoria or jlo, Sofia Vergara or ‘younger newer hotter’ eiza Gonzalez. With statements like ‘I only play leading heroine in films’ she really creates that illusion of being in a similar position there as she is in India, which is A-list.

    Liked by 1 person

    • PC really isn’t that big here. I was thinking about it, and I think it’s because of how TV shows are promoted here that there is this illusion of importance. When Quantico was about to premiere, the studio did a big big push and PC was the star of the show, so she was the star of the promotions too. They put posters up everywhere, got her on talk shows, made sure she was seen at all the right places, and it looked like she was a major star, for a brief while. Because she was everywhere. But it was temporary. TV shows never get the same kind of promotion for subsequent seasons that they do for the first, so the studio pulled their backing of her as a celebrity after that first season and she kind of dropped off the “can’t escape her, everyone’s talking about her” list and down to the “oh yeah, her” list with about 500 other actresses.

Her movies so far have been the usual TV actress kind of fare, filler films for the summer months, nothing with a big name attached or a big release strategy. Which also means she hasn’t gotten the studio backing as part of a film promotion, so no more talk show appearances or posters after that first big burst. Plus, they are all ensemble pieces so far, and she was just part of the ensemble, she wouldn’t be getting a solo poster just for her.

You are absolutely right, she would be an Eva Longoria or a Sofia Vergara. Or probably slightly less than them, because they have been successful TV actresses longer than she has and on more successful shows. There’ve been plenty of actors who went from TV to film, but they tended to do it by giving 110% to their TV shows until it got them noticed, then picking some smaller critically acclaimed type films, and slowly building that into a respectable career. Trying to jump from a TV show into a small part in a stupid summer comedy like Baywatch is not necessarily the route to the A-List. Her Quantico co-star Johanna Braddy (who most reviewers and viewers quickly picked out as a far better actress than PC) is poised to go farther by taking a tiny female directed and female lead film premiering in film festivals this summer than PC is by taking her bigger name but lower quality pictures.

Before this story broke, I was browsing on one of the American sites I read and I searched for Priyanka Chopra, and the only coverage they gave her was from the early season of Quantico, the Met Ball this year when she wore an amazing dress, and the Royal Wedding coverage when she suddenly was on talk shows everywhere talking about Meghan Markle. That’s kind of it, she is known enough for people to recognize her if she shows up in an amazing dress, but otherwise they won’t care.

The deliberate ring in pocket was soooo fake, and really? its private. That was the last straw.
Nick honestly isnt that popular with teenage girls as fans, and she could honestly do so much better. I am glad the US media isnt batting an eye to her engagement rumors. Do you think she could get into Ellen or Jimmy Kimmel, and she will probably reveal it in an international talk show? I would like her to say this excuse of “its private” when a talk show host asks her.

    Like

    • I don’t know if a talk show host would even bother asking her. For the American press, it must be so obviously fake, it’s not even worth asking about. Probably part of the reason interest has lessened, as the people who are paying attention see day by day how increasingly false it is.

I’m seeing the same thing in my PC posts on the blog. The first one got many more views than the subsequent ones. Although the blog is different because it is so comment driven. Here it feels like, everyone kind of has run out of things to say, they’ve said it all and she isn’t doing anything new. I really hope this is the end of it and I can go back to ignoring her. I’d have ignored this story too, I mostly did when it was just Nick Jonas, except the Bharat part of it makes it actually important. But now she’s out, Kat’s in, and Salman’s said his piece, so hopefully we can lay it to rest.

Anyway, PC left 10 days before filming began, that’s not when she started the job, the job started months ago. This is more like committing to a contract, doing prep work for the contract, becoming an integral part of the team, and then dropping out 10 days before the project actually starts along with your whole team.

But then, you know that. I’m just surprised that other people thing 10 days before filming means 10 days before the job begins, not already well into the job.
