Sorry, I missed yesterday’s gift. And all the other days before. But it’s really the last four that lend themselves best to Indian film songs (ladies dancing, lords a leaping, pipers piping, drummers drumming).
Ladies dancing! Two ladies, Madhuri and Manisha. But mostly Madhuri, because she is The Best. “Bade Mushkil” from Lajja.
One lady, plus two gentleman. Aishwarya in “Kajra Re”, not necessarily the best dancing she has ever done, but one of her funner songs.
Have to include a few classics here, “Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya”, one of the most plot-important moments of ladies dancing.
I’m just so proud of Rani for this one! Look at how she articulates her belly muscles! “Aga Bai” from Aiyyaa.
Gotta include Sridevi. And again, this may not be her best performance as a dancer, but it is definitely her funnest song. “Hawa Hawai” from Mr. India.
A totally different and delightful kind of dancing, Sai Pallavi breakdancing in “Vachinde” from Fidaa.
Back to Madhuri! One of her lessor known songs, but I love it. “Humko Aaj Kal Hai”
And then there’s Hemaji! Love this song, totally bonkers and totally fun and gives her so much room to perform. “Babul Pyare”
And finally, of course, Helen! To end with her beginning, “Mere Naam Chin Chin Chu”

These were all fabulous! I especially love SriDevi. Her ability to dance, look sexy but also be hilarious and give you insight into her character all in one song. She was amazing.

She really was. I love “Hawa Hawai” because it could so easily have been either a shallow sexy song, or else a ditzy-funny song, but instead she managed to be sexy, and funny, without ever feeling stupid.

Hey, I just had an idea for when you’re feeling well: can you do a post on songs/dances that best embody or advance the character or plot in a film? I was thinking of how Hawa Hawaai tells you so much about Sridevi’s character: she’s sexy but also slightly goofy and also brave because she’s in Mogambo’s lair and making fun of the villains. In contrast, you have Dola Re Dola which is gorgeous to look at but doesn’t make any sense in the context of the film. They aren’t behaving in a way that makes sense given what we know about the characters and what happens to them in the narrative.

Ooo, that is an interesting idea! Really it’s about songs that it perfectly within the films, aren’t just thrown in as spectacle. “Main Koi Aise” from Yes boss would be another one, we wouldn’t understand Shahrukh and Juhi’s characters or their relationship at all really without it.
