Shahrukh Summer: Lifehacks for Bad SRK Movies

Oops, I forgot, the last time I put up a post implying the existence of “bad” SRK movies, I got a lot of anger on twitter. But you all understand, right? I can love the man and still hate some of the movies?

There’s a certain kind of SRK movie that is so-bad-it’s-good and you might as well watch it straight through because the quality is consistent (Duplicate, Dil Aashna Hai, Chamatkar). And then there are the many SRK movies that are just good-good and there is nothing worth skipping. But finally, there is a subset of films that actually are really good for large sections, but the other sections are so bad they risk turning you off the whole film. But if you have a quick hand with the fastforward button, they can still be saved!

Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman

It’s a cute love triangle that gets way WAY too dark right at the end. Once Shahrukh and Juhi break up, start fastforwarding and don’t stop until the happy ending.

I want this, not the tragic deaths of the proletariat due to bad working conditions.

Pardes

Start at the interval. You miss a few cute scenes in the first half, but the second half resets the whole plot and is much much stronger than the first.

Here, this song is all you need to know about the first half

Mohabbatein

Watch the songs and the SRK-Amitabh scenes, fastforward everything else. You can get the jist of what is happening just from the songs and the other scenes are soooooooooooo boring.

This is fun, watching all these people actually talk to each other is not fun

Veer-Zaara

Stop the movie at the “Aaye Tere Dar Par” song and fastforward to the “Do Pal” song. Everything in between is just stupid.

So much awesome followed by so much stupid

Jab Tak Hain Jaan

Skip the first half, start at the interval. The second half is actually stronger if you don’t know the details of the early romance.

Picture how much stronger this would be if we didn’t know why Kat and Shahrukh broke up and thought it was some tragic legitimate reason instead of STUPID

Dilwale

Every time Shahrukh and Kajol aren’t onscreen, hit the fastforward button. Or, alternatively, every time Jonny Lever or Sanjay Mishra are on screen, hit the fastforward.

Okay, you can watch this one song. But skip everything else.

    • Oh, it’s the only way! I watch it straight through once, but a lot of these I just can’t do the whole thing on rewatching. While still liking the film enough to want to rewatch parts of it.

        • Yeah……

I mean, I can still enjoy the occasional Anjaam or Chamatkar, but I just don’t have the energy to watch all the scenes in Mohabbatein any more.

      • Though you know how Shah Rukh talks about missing the innocence of those early days? I miss the innocence of not know all the horrible politics and unfairness surrounding him

  1. Excellent. I would tweak the advice for JTHJ, since the soundtrack is so strong (even the incidental background music. Just listen to the first half, and if you usually use the subtitles, turn them off.

    • Or maybe do songs only for the first half? Although then you still have to deal with SRK’s weird youthful make-up.

What’s your feeling with Dilwale, skip all non-SRKajol scenes, or just skip the comedy track?

    • For JTHJ, all the SRK-Anushka parts are great. Skip everything with Katrina.
For Dilwale, I don’t even like the SRK-Kajol parts. The only watchable parts are SRK with Varun and his other goon friends. This is the movie that completely and totally killed SRK-Kajol for me as a couple. Done. Never want to see them again.

        • Thank you! I really enjoyed SRK and Varun and loved that he got to do a little bit of comedy which he usually doesn’t get. It was goofy and cute and something a little different from the norm.

I hated everything about SRK-Kajol. The younger parts made them look horrible. They made SRK’s face look like a chipmunk with whatever tacky VFX they did. Kajol with her whitened skin and dyed hair. Eww. And who would buy chubby teddy bear Kajol as a gun wielding gangster? It looked like a joke. Why was the the whole thing copied from other places? The 5-minute date from How I Met Your Mother, the car encounter from Mission Impossible 2, etc. It made it look so cheap and B-grade. The older parts were more bearable but not great either. Their fight scene where SRK grabs her neck was meant to be sexy but SRK was hamming it up and I actually burst out laughing the first time I saw it. Kajol has also been very VERY rusty as an actress lately after all her long breaks. I saw her in VIP 2 (crap) and in Eela (also crap). I’m bored of her now.

I don’t even like the songs. I don’t like anything! Gerua makes your ears hurt with the male vocals. And why on earth did they have SRK wearing bright blue sunglasses during a love song? It made him so detached while saris are flying. Utter crap.

I would have preferred if the movie dumped the love angle and just made a comedy about two brothers.

SRK looked really good in the older parts and that’s the only takeaway from this movie. I would rather watch Happy New Year 10 times back to back than endure Dilwale.

          • Hmm. I’m torn, I liked the SRKajol parts fine, while acknowledging that Kajol was off her game. There were still a few scenes where I felt like she absolutely nailed it (I LOVED the gangster reveal moment). But the film and Shahrukh’s performance was all set up for that, Shahrukh did the heavy lifting in their scenes, his dialogue gave us the backstory, all of that.

On the other hand, now that you have reminded me about it, I really really liked the Shahrukh-Varun bits too. The back in the past section was no good, but the present day and his casual indulgent big brother love, and Varun’s casually respectful and loving little brother love was great. And of course, the sweet gay couple gundas were THE BEST.

  2. If I want to watch a ShahRukh movie, I’ll watch the whole movie…if I want to study or only enjoy ShahRukh, I watch only the scenes where he is involved. The first I do with DVDs, the second on my laptop with the downloaded movies where I can jump to the scenes I want to watch.

    • But they are SO STUPID!!!! Why can’t they just get married and wait for her parents to come around? Why does he take the crazy deal and stay in prison? and so on and so forth?

  3. Dropping some news here. FINALLY!! SRK will star in YRF’s 50th anniversary movie directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. I would say this is very very reliable because the writer Rahul Raut does not spread rumors and I have never seen him being wrong before.

Here AAZ hints at it himself during Bharat promotions (Bharat was NOT YRF)

    And today’s tweet from AAZ:

    • I was excited when I heard the news but then there was written: It will be the biggest action movie ever and I was like: NOOOOOOOOOO.
All the buggest movies lately are crap without soul and I don’t want it for SRK.

      • I’m not interested in those dumb action movies either but I suppose SRK wants a safe box office movie right now. Speculation is that it is probably a Dhoom movie. I honestly enjoyed the first 2 so I won’t mind if it’s like that. The last one with Aamir was very poor but AAZ is a much better director so let’s see.

Rahul Raut is also saying SRK will most like do a Hirani movie first before the AAZ film. He didn’t have confirmation on it so he isn’t writing an article yet.

Yash Chopra’s birthday is Sept. 27 and YRF almost always announces movies on that date so maybe we will hear something soon.

      • Agree! But on the other hand, since this is just rumors of rumors, I’m not gonna get that worried yet.

    • Hmm. I’m sticking with not believing anything until there is an official announcement. Because even if all of this is 100% true, there is many a slip between cup and lip and until there is an official announcement, it can still turn into nothing.
