Happy Columbus Day! I am working, as are most people in America. Which is kind of okay really, considering Columbus was a rapist slaver. Although the Ohio town that is named for him is pretty great, I would happy spend a day celebrating that. Or, “indigenous people day”, which is the more popular alternative and really a generally good idea.
This is where you can ask me anything all week, bring up any topic you want, and so on and so forth. Fun times!
Now, let us celebrate the holiday! First Columbus Day.
And then indigenous people day!
And finally, a question. Totally unrelated to the holiday, just related to my post yesterday where I suggested recasting War with either two women, or an older woman and a younger man. What movies with an older male and younger female lead would you recast with the genders flipped?
Just throwing it out there, what about Dear Zindagi? Rani as the charming attractive wise therapist, and Aditya Roy Kapoor as the troubled young person?
Okay, now you go!
Did you hear Shahid Kapoor will be in another telugu remake? This time he will do Nani’s role in Jersey. What do you think about it?
LikeLike
Yes! I am less excited than I thought I would be. Jersey looks like an okay plot idea, but I was interested in the original because I thought Nani was perfect casting and could make our every man hero really feel like an every man. I don’t know if Shahid can do the same, will I buy him as a sadsack who’s dreams have passed him by?

Since I’m currently obsessed with Hrithk (which will no doubt pass because he’s ultimately not that interesting) I found this compilation of all his movies and I find it interesting that he hasn’t been in many films compared with the Khans. Even Aamir has way more movies under his belt than Hrithik.
I mean, this is a similar compilation for SRK and it’s 23 minutes long compared with Hrithik’s 10 minutes.
I watched the beginning of Kites last night and whoa Kangana plays an unstable woman obsessed with Hrithik and watching it is so uncomfortable in light of how it all played out. 😬

Kites and Krrish 3 were both soooooo similar to the narrative Kangana created, I am assuming the stories of the films became somehow part of the narrative she hallucinated. She’s so creepy.
I am fascinated with how few films Hrithik does. As I said in my Hrithik posts, he was kind of betwixt and between since he was the first of the new breed of actors. A whole bunch of movies in a row in his first 3 years, including a lot of trash, and then switching to only a few films with a lot of prep work. It’s normal now, I think Ranbir after 10 years still has fewer films than the Khans did in their first 3-4 years, but Hrithik straddled that dividing line.
Also, I sometimes suspect the “I am fascinated, oh wait there isn’t that much there” journey is why Suzanne divorced him. Hot boyfriend, good father, nice husband, but at a certain point you just want more.

Hrithik was sooo good in war , why do you think it took soo much movies and tome for hrithik to realise he is so good in this henre rather that kabil or guzarish? I expect him to do more such roles. He blows salman out of water compared to tiger zinda hein etc , this movie is gold and salman should amp up if he wants to comeback.

It makes no sense to me, because Hrithik has always done well in action masala. Bang Bang was a hit, Dhoom 2 was a hit, the Krrish films were hits. And yet he keeps trying to do these slow serious films instead.

I didnt add super 30 since its a hit, still does hrithik need to do that movie?
LikeLike
No! He does not! I’m okay with him doing Jodha-Akbar and Agneepath, which were both more cerebral roles, because they also had fight scenes and love scenes and generally took advantage of his stardom. But Super 30? anyone could have done that!

Boo to brown face Hrithik with dad bod. That is not playing to his strengths, to say the least.

I want all Amitabh’s creepy renaissance movies remade gender flipped. Black, Cheeni Kum, all of those. Even Pink, make it a group of young gay men and a woman.

I love this idea, and Jaya should play all the roles Amitabh played the first time around. Jaya and Shahrukh in Black, Jaya and Anil Kapoor in Cheeni Kum, Jaya and Ranveer, Varun, Rajkummar in Pink. And Jaya and Abhishek in Piku.

Hey, wanted to let you know that I click through to your blog and I really like it! I followed your links on the ELKDTAL and was blessed to see the song where Rekha is a vengeful lesbian. My husband loved that video and he’s not into Bollywood at all.

I would love to see Dear Zindagi flipped, maybe Juhi and my brother from another mother (Indian Jews in the house!) ARK. I really would love to see more women closer to my age in roles where they still have sex appeal…you know I love Shah Rukh and the 30 year olds but I’m annoyed at the ever present double standard…Rani is the ‘older woman’ at 41; Juhi is 51, Madhuri 52…let them have some fun with a 30 year old guy!

Ooo, I like Juhi and ARK! What about Jab Harry Met Sejal with Rani and Vicky Kaushal? Happy New Year with Juhi (so good at comedy) and Shahid Kapoor (so good at dancing)?

Also how about Shahrukh and an age appropriate co-star? I know he had said at one time he wanted to do a mature romance with Kajol; I don’t know if Dilwale was supposed to be it. I would love seeing something fully developed!

Absolutely, obviously the dream. But so long as we are dreaming, how about a gender flip where Shahrukh is far younger than his female co-star? How about JHMS with Shahrukh and Rekha? Or Chennai Express with Shahrukh and Dimple Kapadia?

Oh oh!!!! What about remaking Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi? Rekha is an old spinster with a great house, Shahrukh’s fiancee dies on the way to his wedding and his mother dies shortly after and asks him to marry Rekha so he will have someone to take care of him? And then Rekha can play both spinster, and sexy?

Film Companion wrote about the gay subtext and it turns out Anupama Chopra thinks the real love story is between Ashutosh Rana and Hrithik:
LikeLike
Huh. I could see it I suppose, but I find Hrithik-Tiger far more sexy. In a way the Ashutosh-Hrithik relationship is more the one I would expect to see in a Hindi film, minimal sexiness, minimal evidence, but if you really really try, you can imagine it. They even un-sexied Ashutosh, compare him in War to him in Humpty (where I could actually have seen a love story with him and Varun, or him and the fiance).
Also, as always when reading Film Companion, I have that irritating feeling of “you are almost smart, and you write like you are smart, but you just barely miss the mark”. Like, this line from the article, where the heck did it come from? “Most gay relationships have a wide age gap, the older partner playing both mentor and lover to the younger one who is often coming to terms with their sexuality”
“some gay relationships” or “often fictional gay relationships” or “it is not uncommon for gay relationships…” But “most”????? That’s weird, right? And if it was in TOI or Bollywoodhungama I wouldn’t care, but I expect more of FC and I am so frequently disappointed.
Along those same lines “Yash Raj was finally coming out of the closet”. But, this is the studio that produced Silsila??? And Gunday??? Again, I wouldn’t care if it was TOI, but I just get so frustrated with FC for not trying to be better.
And this is why I don’t read FC, because why make myself miserable?

Sorry, let me rephrase that as a question. How did Jason Momoa end up in a photo with SRK and Jackie Chan? And who invited Jean Claude Van Damme?

You know how the school photos liked to put everyone of the same height together? I am assuming that is how Jackie, Shahrukh, and JCVD ended up all together. And then Jason Momoa photobombed them.
