My Shahrukh Birthday Party Celebrations!

Last year I had 9 people, this year it might just be me or one person. But both ways have their own joys. And obviously, it makes no difference in my preparations. It’s a birthday! It has to be celebrated.

First, my decorations! (thank you thank you Patricia Merry for my lovely lifesize SRK! Normally he stays in the bedroom, but I am letting him out for this special occasion).

Next, my cake! I went with a full figure outline this year, obviously arms stretched out.

And finally, movies! You all have to help me decide. If it is one person who has never seen an SRK movie before, which should I pick? And if it is just me alone, which one? And if it is a surprise large number of people (always possible, my friends are terrible at RSVP’ing), which one?

  1. Let me clarify. Just you – JHMS. One person who hasn’t seen any SRK? JHMS. A group of friends who didn’t RSVP but show up? JHMS. 💕

    • Sorry, Happy New Year! Plus some of the best bits of Chaahat and a few minutes of the Letterman interview. Decided JHMS was just too risky. Maybe her next time.

    • Yes! I am always more emotional on November 2nd than I expect. And that’s before I try to write my new JHMS review.

    • Ah, but the plot just sounded too confusing when I tried to describe it to her! So we went for Happy New Year. What’s to understand? In order to steal diamonds, they have to win a World Dance Championship.

  2. It depends on the demographic. If it’s all female friends – definitely go for JHMS. Hollywood makes horrible romcoms – ones I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. A movie like this would be a revelation for them. It’s pretty fun even if you don’t think of it too deeply.
If it’s a mixed group, definitely Chak De. It’s a sports movie but the absolute best kind. I think Don won’t be that great if you don’t know about the original Don – the surprise factor in the twist is all gone.
Also, he looks really good in both Chak De and JHMS. Imagine having to put up with that mustache in Paheli especially if it’s your first time watching SRK. It’s hard enough on the rest of us too!!

    • All excellent points! Don is a favorite of my friends, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t work well as a first movie. I forgot about that. I showed her Paheli, and she went “oh, that’s the same guy? He has a mustache!” So yeah, the mustache is a big problem.

I avoided JHMS just because there was going to be a lot of dog playing, cake serving, and so on. So we landed on Happy New Year.

        • Yes! The new person greatly enjoyed it, the old person had seen it with me opening night in theaters and enjoyed watching it again, the dog was losing his little doggie mind and constantly begging them to play with him, so it was good that we didn’t have to concentrate.

  3. I second RNBDJ. Very accessible, touching and fun with a good range of what Shah Rukh and Hindi cinema has to offer.
Same Claudia – I would love to drop in. Wouldn’t that be a blast!

    • If I am ever as rich and powerful as SRK, I will totally hire a hall and fly you all in special for birthday celebrations.
