Saturday Small Talk: Chat While I Make Shahrukh’s Birthday Cake!

Happy Shahrukh’s Birthday!!!!! I already put up a placeholder post for us all to share our favorite messages and photos and so on as the day goes on, you can find it here. For other small talk, this is the place!

We had a freak snowstorm on Halloween and it ended up being about 4-6 inches deep. Poor Albie Dog was very confused because this was the first time he had seen real snow. And I was confused as well because I couldn’t figure out what he was doing, he would walk through a drift and then suddenly jump and leap forward. And then walk normally, and suddenly jump and leap forward again. I thought maybe his tummy was getting frozen by the snow, but would that really be worthy of a sudden leap? I’d never had a dog act like this before. And then I remembered that this is a MALE dog. So, he has a penis. Which is getting little bits of ice and snow hitting it randomly. Poor doggie. My first thought was to make him a little penis-shield to keep him warm. But then I realized that unless I built in some kind of fly system and taught him how to use it, “penis-shield” is not a good idea for a dog. So really what I am saying is, the male anatomy is terribly designed. Discuss.

Also bad for horseback riding.

In other news, Panipat just released their first poster and confirmed the December 6th release date. Is it a bad sign that I keep forgetting that this movie exists and is coming soon?

And random topic suggested by an exchange I had with Rachel yesterday, what are your favorite sitcoms and/or the ones you most want translated to India (film or TV series)? Personally, I have watched Frasier and Golden Girls umpteen times. I think either of them could translate well, but I would prefer GG. And in the “I like it, but I don’t think it could work in India” category, there is The Bob Newhart Show. Gentle humor and a childless-by-choice couple? Not very desi.

Shabana Azmi as Blanche and Shahrukh as her younger lover? Tell me you wouldn’t watch that!

    • Not gonna lie – this portion of the fan base was the worst one SRK had so it’s good if he loses them. It will be best for him.
He is an icon, not a Muslim icon. I don’t think he ever wanted the latter.

  1. Make a smaller series of a groupe of elder Indian women…and yes, with a certain lightness of being, decent humour and serious issues, I could imagine this.

Albie…maybe that’s why some dogs “bite” the snow 😉

  2. Mashup time – re sitcoms and Albie Dog…the episode of Seinfeld in which they are in the Hamptons and Jerry’s girlfriend sees George come out of the shower…and when Elaine is asked if she is aware of “shrinkage”, she says, “they shrink? I don’t know how you people walk around with those things.”

  3. I’m so happy, because I saw that italian Primerecently added almost every YashRaj movie ever made: from Daag to TOH. Earlier we had only few newest ones, and now I can finally watch Aaina I have been searching for years. Or Silsila , or Kabhi Kabhie.

    • I am pretty sure you will love Aaina. Amrita Singh is so eeeeeeeeeeeeevil. Also, relevant to recent discussions, Jackie Shroff wanders around wearing a washcloth and nothing else.

    • I haven’t seen that clip but I saw another clip where he explained his long break – he said there were 2 or 3 reasons for it. One was that he was in “recovery” and that he has recovered now, second was that his kids were going to college so he wanted to spend time with them before that and third, he wants to select the right movies – ones the audience likes and not just ones he likes.
He also said he doesn’t like playing hero roles and that when he came to Mumbai, he said in an interview that he is a “character actor” and Vivek Vaswani and others got really angry with him when that interview came out saying “No!! You are here for hero roles. Don’t say that.” So because of that, he tries to do character roles that still fits a hero but that it fails sometimes. He said Aryan also told him “When we were young, we had movies like Baazigar and Kuch Kuch Hota Hota Hai but AbRam has nothing like that. Papa, you have to make movies like that to show AbRam why you are so loved.”
Although he didn’t make an announcement, he did confirm that he *will* release a movie next year. But he won’t announce it until after they already start shooting. According to him, by that time, you already know how the film is shaping up. So he will announce that in 2 or 3 months. He said he is working on many things, with many friends and many directors and that he feels he should now quickly make a lot of films for everyone.
Since he mentioned “recovery,” it’s possible that he actually was ill. Either mentally or physically. Or it just maybe all his old injuries flaring up. Not sure what he meant to be honest. But he did say that he has recovered, so don’t worry.

      • Doesn’t he routinely talk about his orphopedic injuries in terms of “when I have time, I can get it taken care of but there will be a long recovery”? Could that be it? A big orgy of shoulder/back/knee surgeries, each with their own rehab and recovery period? I suppose he could kind of hide that, surgery in London, three days in bed, and then lowkey rehab that would be easy to handle if he didn’t have to schedule it around filming and performances and so on.

        • Surgery usually results in a cast on his arm or leg or something like that so it probably can’t be hidden. He has been seen a lot even during his break and there was nothing like that. Most likely, he finally took out time to get physical therapy and exercise and then rest.

He also said that for the past 25 years, he hasn’t been able to give his family a lot of time so he made it up to them by sitting at home for a whole year. All he did was hang out with Gauri, his kids and his sister.

I saw another clip that continued after him saying “I want to make a lot of films quickly now.” He added that maybe he won’t be able to make them quickly. Because AbRam is small and he wants to spend time with him. He said by the time they are 10, they don’t want to spend time with you anymore so he has to do it now.

Someone asked him if he tells stories about his parents to his kids? Surprisingly, he said no. He said he doesn’t remember many things about them anymore. His dad died in 1981 so it’s been almost 40 years. He said he doesn’t have many pics of them either – just the ones online. Also said his kids think Gauri’s parents are his parents so they’ve got it all mixed up together. For them nana nani (maternal grandparents) are also dada dadi (paternal grandparents).

There was a short bit where someone asked him when he would come to Bangalore. He said he told Gauri just the other day that they should go – he has a house there that needs to be repaired. So he will go there soon for that. I think this is the house that SRK’s grandfather (maternal grandfather, Iftikar Ahmed, the one who built the Mangalore port) left for him. He hasn’t done anything with it so far.
