Middle-Aged Romances You Can Watch Right Now Instead of Waiting for Shahrukh to Make One

I know we all want Shahrukh to make an age appropriate romance, but there are already age appropriate romances out there! We don’t have to wait!

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi

Such a cute movie! It’s one of those I keep forgetting exists, and then remembering and being happy that it is in the world. Boman Irani is a middle-aged man who lives with his mother and grandmother and manages a loungerie store. He’s not very attractive and a little shy (pushy mother syndrome) and somehow has never gotten engaged. And then he meets Farah. Outspoken head of the housing association, gutsy and strong, and sweeps him off his feet. How can you not want to watch this?

Pyaar Main Twist

This one takes a turn towards the drama a little bit at the end, but is mostly cute. Rishi and Dimple are a widower and a widow, both with grown children. They bump into each other walking in the park and start to talk and become friends. Eventually Rishi is brave enough to invite her out on a date, they talk, they dance, they fall in love. And then the trouble starts. But mostly, it’s Dimple being elegant and beautiful and Rishi being soft and gallant and in love with her.

Aaja Nachle

This doesn’t feel like an “older” romance, but that’s the magic of Madhuri. Madhuri is 40, playing close to her real age, the divorced successful single mother of a 12 year old daughter. And she has a mature romance with Akshaye Khanna, 32 year old playing a successful politician. They talk about real things, they respect each other, they like each other, and they don’t need dates and love songs and big announcements about it.

Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Limited

There’s a lot of romances in this movie, but the most romantic romance, the happiest and deepest, is between Boman Irani and Shabana Azmi. He is a Goan Christian in a bad wig, she is a dignified Urdu speaking Muslim woman in a hijab. But he learns Ghalib poems to recite to her, and she gets up to dance with him at parties. It’s worth watching the film just to see how perfectly their story unspools.

Ignore all the other stuff, focus on Boman and Shabana

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha to Aise Laga

Juhi and Anil’s romance is not the center of the film, but it is the biggest romance in the film. And it is perfection!!!! Two people who are old enough to know who they are and what they want in life, but not too old to still get the bubble of fear and excitement when they like-like someone.

Okay, that’s five! I know there are more, I will let you all fill that in in the comments. Tell me what should be added to the list!

    • This brings up a bigger question! Should I include marriage romances on this? Because there’s also Dil Dhadakne Do and Talaash and English-Vinglish.

        • Well, if we are including middle-aged love stories, a lot of it is about Sridevi being torn between her husband and Hot French Man.

Badhai Ho is definitely a sweet romance, but they are married for at least 25 years already. So do we think that is a “romance” or just boring married people?

  1. One of the best I have seen is between Prakash Raj – Radhika Apte in Telugu/Tamil movie named “Dhoni” – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhoni_(film)

I like Kamal Hassan – Simran in Pammal K Sambandham (Tamil) – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pammal_K._Sambandam

Mammootty – Anjali in Perambu – though short.

A movie I didn’t like – Prakash Raj – Sneha in Ulavacharu Biyani (Telugu)/ Un Samayal Arayil (Tamil) – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un_Samayal_Arayil

  2. Going to recommend Once Again once again. It is pretty slow, but unlike a lot of other middle aged romances it makes both of the principles look really hot. And I think both Shefali Shah and Neeraj Kabi deserve to look really hot.

  3. One of my favorite middle aged romances is the old Katha Meetha with Ashok Kumar, Pearl Padmasee, Rakesh Roshan and Bindya Ghoswami. It is inspired by Yours, Mine, and Ours and so cute!!

  4. At first I thought I was reading fan fiction, but then I clicked on the box and there was Farah, dancing with Boman, and it is REAL! I didn’t know Farah acted. Can’t wait to see it!

    • It’s so wonderful! This is Farah’s only film role, I think she just wanted to do it once. She’s largely playing herself, and she’s charming.
