Just to be clear, these are NOT movies about Christmas!!!! They are family friendly loving sweet hopeful films about “the human spirit” or whatever. And I thought it would be nice to have a little festival of family happy love movies as we all get in the holiday spirit.
12/16: Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (youtube, googleplay)
The sweetest familiest film ever! Perhaps too sweet? Maybe usually, but for 10 days before Christmas it’s like a hot cup of peppermint mocha coffee with whipped cream.
12/16: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (youtube, googleplay)
Love stories with grandmas and little daughters and magical ghosts and Soul Mates, this is the stuff that holiday magic is made of!
12/17: Hum Saath Saath Hain (Netflix and Prime)
Another one that is normally too sweet, but again, Christmas! Let’s all sing family songs and go on family honeymoons and treat a change of bedrooms like The End of Everything.
12/17: Maine Pyar Kiya (Netflix)
The film that started Rajshri! And Salman Khan. Strange combination of innocent and sexual, like one of those weird modern Christmas pop songs.
12/18: Ohm Shanti Oshaana (youtube, googleplay, Hotstar)
Hey, an actual Christian character! And it’s cute and family friendly and adorable all around in the best most magical Christmass-y way.
12/18: Kumbalangi Nights (Netflix)
I thought this was too dark for Christmas, but Alisa/BollywoodNewbie pointed out that It’s a Wonderful Life is super dark too, so I’m putting it in!
12/19: Anand (Hotstar, youtube)
Sekhar Kummala festival! The happiest sweetest nicest director in Telugu cinema, starting with this sweet story of forgiveness and love at first sight. And the whole thing is free on youtube!
12/19: Fidaa (youtube, googleplay, Prime)
The newest Sekhar, easy to find, super cute hero, great songs. Second half is a bit weak, but it’s still great.
12/19: Godaveri (youtube free)
Also free on youtube! And also heartwarming and wonderful as always.
12/20: Dhanak (Netflix)
Another movie I really love, it’s just so beautiful. And if you ever have a hard time believing in goodness and faith and hope and all those Christmas things, watch this film.
12/20: Badhai Ho (Hotstar)
Sorry, wish this one was easier to find. But it’s worth it! Loving family waiting for their miracle baby, despite social approbation. Doesn’t get more Christmas-y than that!
12/21: Bharat (Prime)
This one is a real It’s a Wonderful Life kind of plot. But a lovely version of it, an average man and the average things he did that spread love through the world and raised up his whole family.
12/22: King Uncle (youtube free)
Have you ever thought “gee, I’d like to see Little Orphan Annie, but in Hindi, and with Shahrukh having a minor role”? If so, this movie is here for you!
12/22: Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga (Netflix)
Such a lovely loving warm family movie! Really, I cannot oversell it.
12/23: Dilwale (Netflix)
Brotherly love, second chances, forgiveness, and the whole thing actually takes place during the Christmas season!
12/24: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Prime, googleplay, youtube, itunes)
You know the British tradition of the holiday pantomime? A sweet little child friendly story played out by grown up actors? This is the Indian version of that.
12/24: Baghban (Prime and youtube free)
Kind of a downer ending, but also a nice reminder that families are complicated just in time for us all to get together with our families.
Oh, I thought you were talking about the Hindi Anand, with Rajesh Khanna. Although that one’s kind of heartwarming and there is also a Christian character. But not what I’d call Christmassy.

Telugu Anand is definitely Christmas-y, and I am comfortable recommending it to anyone.

Wow! Bhagban on Christmas Eve is a bold choice! It is waay too sad and makes me cry way too much to watch it right before Christmas.

But love will go on! And the family you choose is better than the family you have!

But the children are horrible, selfish people. The way they treated heir parents in the middle of the movie is way too much for me to stomach during Christmas. But you are also right, the ending is quite amazing. I do enjoy the Amitabh-Hema romance and just love Salman and Mahima in it. I do wish there had been more Salman in this one.

Well, I can leave the option for people to watch the first 40 minutes, and the last 40 minutes, and skip the middle.

YES!! You really should! I have actually done that just about everytime I have seen the movie after the first time. You already know I do this with many movies and series (e.g., Humsafar).

Although then I miss my second favorite moment of the film (after the “Hema tells off evil boyfriend” scene which is of course my first favorite) which is when Lillette Dubey and Paresh Rawal are all upset hearing Amitabh talk about Hema, and then Lillette gives Paresh a glare and storms off in a clear “why aren’t you as good a husband as Amitabh???” way.

Oh the boyfriend scene is quite amazing, but tell people where to stop and start. Watch the first 40 minutes, then fast forward to Hema telling off boyfriend, then fast forward to Amitabh talking about Hema and then last 40 minutes.

I’d say stop at “Main Yahan to Wahan”, that is sad enough to give you an idea of the plot, fastforward to Hema telling off the boyfriend, stopping at the Valentine’s Day song, and then keep going until the train station reunion.

MPK “started Rajshri”?! They’d been in business for at least 45 years at that point!

“started modern Rajshri” then.
